Daphne turned around quickly when she heard the sound of footsteps approaching from behind. âOh, didnât see you there. Would you be interested in some tea? Iâm sure I have a second tea cup around here somewhere.â
Ginny laughed, looking down at the muggle device. âDo you reckon old Dad will even be able to figure out this touch-screen thing?â
Daphne looked at the object in question and laughed. âMaybe? I havenât even figured it out, but thatâs probably because I refuse to get one.âÂ
âWhat in the love of Merlin are you doing?â Luna asked slowly, staring in horror at the person in front of her, who was grinning at her with wide eyes.
âSorry!â Daphne exclaimed getting up off of the floor with the cat she had been chasing in hand. âThis little guy escaped from the shop and I was trying to catch him and take him back. Unless you are interested in adopting a mischievous cat?â
@snakepitnetâ event â member introduction, favourite lightning-era slytherin characters;
Daphne Greengrass  was a pure-blood witch and a member of the Greengrass family, an old wizarding family and one of the Sacred Twenty-Eight. She began attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1991 and was Sorted into Slytherin House. She was the older sister of Astoria Greengrass.

The name Daphne means âLaurelâ in Greek. It is derived from the nymph Daphne in Greek mythology, who was pursued by the god Apollo. She prayed to her father, the river god Peneus, to change her body in order to escape the love-struck Apollo and Peneus then transformed her into the laurel tree, which Apollo then claimed as one of his sacred symbols. In Ancient Greece, a wreath of laurels was given as a prize and considered a symbol of prosperity, fame and victory. Daphne is also the name of a plant noted for its fragrant flower, but wholly poisonous.

The expectation of a different Greengrass sister opening the door to him was quickly replaced with his own heart rate quickening. Panic began to rise, and he knew that in his current state, in some sort of a manic that was definitely very un-Slytherin of him, the emotions that were radiating from him uncontrollably were going to get in the way of him making proper, good decisions. He couldnât deny that he was slightly disappointed that Astoria wasnât home, not from any reason besides that he needed to see her. Daphne was nice, theyâd shared years of memories together, and that wasnât something that Theo treated lightly. But he hadnât really had the chance to get to know the elder Greengrass sister like he knew the younger one.
The moment to make a decision lingered between them, but thankfully Daphne made it for him, which in some way, somehow, eased his racing heart. His hands were by his side, clammy, clenched, and his nails digging into his palms that were starting to slowly unfurl and luckily, she turned around before she could see his own look of distress quickly replaced by relief.
He followed after her, closing the door behind him, nodding at the house elf that was making its way towards him, and followed the head of golden curls into their lounge room. The house that he had been in so many times felt different somehow, but he knew that a house wasnât made of things but the people, and of all people, Theo knew that better than anyone. With Astoria, they barely used the sitting room, with its portraits of generations of Greengrassâ and ancestors, instead opting for the library or the less formal areas of the house, but he followed Daphne.
âIâm sorry, I donât mean to barge,â he could sense something was off about her. Heâd been around her enough to know what she looked like when she was okay, and when she wasnât. And there was something about the excess of the whites in her eyes, the slightly red, puffy rings around them, and the tension she carried in her jaw and shoulders, that alerted him. She looked as bad as he did, he thought to himself silently. âIf you donât mind, Daphne, I think I need something a little stronger than tea,â he found himself a seat across from her, and immediately felt himself sinking into the cushions. âA lot stronger, if you have any.â
The tension began to leave Daphneâs shoulders as let her body sink into the armchair and a quiet sigh of relief escaped her lips without her even noticing it. She was relieved that her old classmate and agreed to join her, though if she was honest she had not given him much of a choice. She was even more relieved when he mentioned that he was going to need something stronger that tea. She nodded at Theoâs request in agreement and was about to call for the house elf making her tea when he rounded the corner. Perfect timing, Daphne thought to herself. Daphne mimed taking a shot to the elf and he nodded in understanding as he went back to the kitchen to grab the pair that something stronger.Â
Daphne looked around the room for the first time since arriving to the house and couldnât help but feel uncomfortable by the eyes of her disapproving family members staring down at her. There were many reasons why Daphne didnât come back to the house more often and this was one of them. Daphne tried to get back to the state of comfort she was in when she first sat down and glanced over towards her classmate. He looked like he was also doing better in comparison to how he looked when she first opened the door but there was still something bothering him. She wanted to ask him what was wrong but figured that neither of them would feel comfortable talking much until their drinks arrived. Luckily for both of them Sherbet had made his way back from the kitchen with a rather large bottle of Fire Whiskey and two rocks glasses. Daphne poured a glass for herself and Theo and sat it on the table in front of him.
She quickly downed her drink and poured herself another before finally speaking to the man sitting in front of her. âSorry for the lack of options. Since I moved out the liquor cabinet isnât as stocked as I would like it to be. I hope Fire Whiskey works for you.â Daphne took another sip of her glass and before asking him the questions she was dying to know the answer of. âWhy were you looking for my sister? Is everything okay? Did something happen?â Daphne realized she was probably being intrusive considering the fact that she hadnât spoken much to Theo over the years and knew very little about him. âActually I take all of that back, you donât have to answer any of those questions if you donât want. I wouldnât want you to feel uncomfortable. But if you do want to talk about something, Iâm happy to listen. Iâm may not be as cheerful and sweet as Astoria, but Iâve been told I'm a good listenerâ
pugfacedparkinscnâ:
Pansy always imagined herself into being an influential woman, even as a child. She would play at her parents feet as they would drink tea or wine with other purebloods and discuss events in hushed tones, events she heard discussed in the news days later. She would sneak pumpkin juice into the dorms with Daphne at Hogwarts, pouring the drink into ornate glasses she stole from her fatherâs study before coming to school. They would sit by the fire and Pansy would play at being her mother; the glass loosely held in her hand, gaze peeking up from thick lashes, an ever present smirk on her painted lips. Of course, with Pansy doing it, it looked silly. But the tradition continued, even after her father screamed at her for stealing his sherry glasses, even after she stopped trying to be her mother. The weekly drinks turned into something different; she wasnât trying to be her mother, with her hushed tones that teetered on the edge of danger. She was laughing loudly with Daphne, swapping stories about what they had seen that week, which professors were absolutely shagging. She still held the glasses loosely in her hand, but her smirks had turned to genuine grins.Â
Some things never change, after all. Such as Pansyâs need to be early and Daphneâs inability to be on time. If it were anyone else, she would have been annoyed, bordering on furious. But Daphne was different. She considered all her friends - or anyone who was in Slytherin with her - to be her own blood. Perhaps that said more about her biological family than Pansyâs own relationship with her friends, but that was neither here nor there. However, Daphne was on a different level entirely. She was Pansyâs best friend - one of her first real friends, one of the only people she tolerated calling her out on her own shit, one of the few people she would die for. ( She would kill for nearly anyone but giving her own life is another situation entirely. ) All things considered, Pansy wasnât about to begrudge her for being late.Â
When Daphne did arrive, however, Pansy broke out into a smile; the quirk of her lips had a harsh edge to it, as it always did, but it no longer had the look of fangs, merely a knife. As Daphne hugged her back, Pansyâs eyes left her entertainment for the evening. Directing her attention to Daphne, she stroked the blondeâs hair, pushing it behind her ear. âIt was halfway to hell when I sat down. I think sheâs been plotting her move for the past half hour, give or take.â She smirked at the compliment, allowing herself to soak up the pretty words for a moment. âI bought it last Tuesday - celebration for breaking my first affair of the month,â she laughed, as if she needed an occasion to go shopping. She sat down, grabbing her own drink as Daphne joined her, waving a hand to dismiss her apologies. âSpeaking of, any new owls that fit my sky high expectations?â Pansy asked, referring to her list of traits any animal of hers had to have; namely, they had to be aesthetically pleasing, in a way that matched Pansyâs own aesthetic. She wasnât exactly in the market for an owl, as she used one of her fatherâs when she needed to, but it was something to talk to Daphne about. They shared an interest in animals, though Pansy kept hers close to her chest. Pansy smirked as she set into to talk about her haul of secrets of the past week. âWhat would you like to know first, Daph? Sex, drugs, politics, office gossip, or my own woes?â
Daphne couldnât help but smile when she met her friend for drinks. No matter how stressed, or anxious she was, Pansy had this uncanny ability to calm her down and make it seem like nothing else was important. The only thing that mattered was getting tipsy and finding out about all of the weeks hot gossip. As Daphne took a sip of her gin and tonic she couldnât help but feel refreshed, and relaxed. All of the adrenaline from rushing to the bar to try and be there on time had settled and she found herself settling into their evening of debauchery.Â
While she was settling in, she noticed that the man had made his way up to the bar to buy a new drink. She was impressed, and a little concerned about this manâs gusto. Here he was covered in his dates drink, hanging around to pick up someone new, it was a bold choice. Daphne tilted her head in the direction of the man and gave a slight chuckle so that Pansy wouldnât miss the new development in their evenings entertainment before engaging back in their conversation. âWell then it sounds like a celebration is in order! Breaking your first affair, and a new top? God your life is so much more exciting than mine.â Daphne said before taking another sip of her drink.
She thought about the animals that were currently in the shop and frowned. âNot yet, but Iâm keeping my eyes peeled. I know we are going to find a perfect one for you soon. There are definitely a few cats that would live up to your standards though, maybe even a few rats and ravens.â Daphne took another sip of her drink before deciding on the gossip topic of choice. â Well obviously I need to hear about your woes darling, but then we should definitely discuss the sex and politics. It seems like that kind of night.â

fayxdunbarâ:
Itâs not like Fay hadnât been periodically looking in through the window of the Magical Menagerie whenever she passed through Diagon Alley or was headed off to work. She never stopped in because she wasnât sure if she actually wanted a pet and she wanted to be sure she had a permanent residence before she even tried to get a pet. Though she had to admit, it was getting awfully lonely in her flat, a flat that she was struggling to afford. Still, it couldnât hurt to stop in and look, right?
What she didnât expect was to see someone teaching one of the animals tricks. It seemed like she hadnât been noticed at the moment, so she watched the performance, both impressed and amused. The Kneazle, now that she could catch a clear glimpse, performed all of the standard tricks. But what she thought was fun was the Kneazle catching the treats in the air. When her presence was finally realized, Fay smiled. âItâs alright, I was enjoying the performance. That Kneazleâs really good, have you been training it?â
She glanced towards the animals. âIâm actually thinking about getting a pet. Maybe a cat or a weasel? I thought Iâd stop in to look before I commit to buying. I live in a small flat, so I want to make sure I have room. Do you have any recommendations?â
Daphne could always tell when someone was just looking to play with the animals and when someone was genuinely considering adopting. There was something about the way their eyes lit up when they saw animals that was different to those who just wanted to play or see the animals. This girls eyes were definitely lighting up, if she didnât have pets already she was most likely considering getting one.Â
Merlin was pawing at his cage asking for more treats, Daphne couldnât help but chuckle at the greedy Kneazle as she threw a few more treats into his cage. When she turned back around to look at the girl she realized she it was an old class mate of hers. Fay something, Daphne wasnât super familiar with the Gryffindor but she definitely recognized her. Daphne was always a little apprehensive when she ran into her non-Slytherin classmates since the Battle of Hogwarts. Not that they werenât good people, she just never know how they were going to react. Trying not to seem too nervous, Daphne smiled at the girl and held a hand out with a few treats. âGlad you enjoyed it, if you would like you can give him some treats as well.â She said before answering the girls question. âI have and Merlin has been a star pupil. As you can see he is very food motivated. Iâve been working on a few of the others but he has definitely out shined the rest. Which is good because he has a lot of energy which makes people hesitant to adopted him, but once the right family sees his potential I think he will get picked up pretty quickly. At least I hope he does.âÂ
Daphne thought about the selection of cats and weasel that they currently had in the store and tried to think of who would be best for the girl. âWhen getting a pet itâs important to make sure you get one that will fit your lifestyle. Iâm glad to hear you are doing a little research before you adopt, because once you take one of these amazing creatures home they think they are going to be part of your life forever, and it break their little hearts when they get brought back.â Daphne explained as she walked towards down the aisle towards the cats and weasels. âBut I digress, we have plenty of options in the ways of cats and weasels. In order to find one that is perfect for you I need to know what exactly are you looking for in a pet? Are you looking for a young or old pet? Are you looking for something with a lot of energy or something that just likes to lounge around all day?â
