I’ll never understand why anthropomorphic animal cartoons like Robin Hood and Zootopia will go to the trouble of creating character designs that are meant to be understood as “attractive” or even “sexy” to the human audience but explicitly avoid showing interspecies romances between anthropomorphic animals. Why is THAT weird but, like, trying to make rabbits recognizably sexy-coded to humans isn’t?

Sometimes, sure, but why was Maid Marian a fox in Robin Hood? There wasn’t anything particularly “foxlike” about her personality, and it would make more sense for her to be a lion. They made her a fox only because Robin was a fox and making her something else would be “weird”, but I don’t think the wolf cop or the chicken maid or the lion prince were actually meant to represent race.

Ok, I come from a strong Literature background, so Imma say some stuff you probably already know, but which is constantly in my head. H.P. Lovecraft was a godawful person. His views went well beyond the racism and xenophobia that were considered normal at the time, marking him as someone especially regressive even then. He was the guy who shows up at your conservative aunt’s thanksgiving party, and then starts talking about how all the blacks should go back to Africa, at the point of a gun if necessary. Thing is, his work is incredibly influential. It really isn’t possible to understand the evolution of science fiction and horror without grappling with Lovecraft’s art. And beyond that, while he’s far from my favorite author, a lot of his stories are damned entertaining. “The Shadow Over Innsmouth” is a pretty haunting, gripping tale, and that remains true even when you realize that it’s fundamentally about the fear of miscegenation. Skipping forward a bit, one of my favorite shows of all time remains “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” I still watch it every now and then, and OH BOY do I cringe when certain things come up. You probably know which things. And I cringe again when I remember the revelations about Joss Whedon that have come to light since then. But a) Television as it is today would simply not exist without Buffy (or something like it, but that’s a whole other bag of historical theory), and b) It’s still an amazing show, as long as you examine it critically, warts and all, and allow yourself to engage with exactly what the show is doing, why, how, and the way that it fits into the context of the late 90′s/early 2000′s in which it was made. Art is important. Art is beautiful. PLEASE understand what makes your favorite texts problematic, and engage those aspects. Wrestle with them. Try to find if you can live with them or not. But don’t just throw out these pieces of history and joy just because they aren’t perfect. Do not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. And don’t let anyone make you feel bad for enjoying something that contains problematic elements. This pontification brought to you by a constantly frustrated Lit person.

I also want to add that… people are not required to wrestle with the issues of a piece of fiction in a public space if they choose not to. You’re not required to give a public disclaimer that “I know this piece of media has issues, BUT-” every time you express your enjoyment of some aspect of it. 

Informing others who may not know about author bias/bigotry, and the potential views that may intertwine into a piece of fiction is fine, but please refrain from bullying others for the pieces of media they enjoy. Consume media wisely, consider its deeper implications and themes thoughtfully, and be kind to each other, please.

Five years ago I was devastated as I watched Ian and Mickey break up, I thought it was all over (Noel was leaving the show). Less than a year later, I cried as I watched Ian and Mickey say their (supposedly) final good-byes during that gut-wrenching jail visitation scene. My favorite thing about my favorite show had ended.

But then, three and a half years ago I was ecstatic as I watched Ian and Mickey run away together, only to have tears once again fall the very next week as Ian said good-bye to Mickey at the Mexican border. It was all over, again.

Two years ago I was heartbroken about Ian going to jail (Cam was leaving the show), but there was that moment of wonderful bliss when Mickey walked through the jail cell door for a (once again supposedly) final farewell. I believed that was really it, it was all truly, for real and for good, over. The last time I’d ever see Ian and Mickey.

But somehow, the stars aligned, Season 10! It is still unbelievable to me that in the past year I cried tears of joy as I watched Ian and Mickey get married, overcoming all odds.
