Better Know a Gay Power Couple: Chris Hughes & Sean Eldridge

Chris Hughes & Sean Eldridge are not only one of the youngest gay power couples, they are also among the most powerful. The pair married on June 30th 2012, and have been making waves in the political and financial worlds for quite a while. Chris Hughes (30) comes from a middle class family in North Carolina and graduated from Harvard in 2006 with a B.A. in Art History and Literature. He was one of the founders of Facebook, taking about five hundred million dollars with him when he left. He is more recently known as the online coordinator for Barack Obama’s first campaign, credited by many with winning him the election. His current occupation is as publisher and editor of The New Republic, which he bought a majority stake in in 2012. He is currently estimated to be worth about eight hundred and fifty million dollars. Sean Eldridge (27) is from an upper-middle class family in Ohio and graduated from Brown with a degree in philosophy. He works for the Freedom to Marry campaign to fight for marriage equality, and is currently running for office in New York’s 19th, where he campaigns for reform and works with his Hedge Fund to support local businesses. Having moved thee solely for the purpose of gaining office, he is seen by many locals as opportunistic and ill-informed of local culture, seemingly unable to represent their needs well. The pair reside dually between their $5 million dollar home in New York’s 19th, and their $4.9 million 4,200 square foot one room loft in Manhattan at 30 Crosby st. Chris seems to be sitting well in life, while his other half, Sean, is still on the upward climb to balance the power in this power couple. Either way, nothing can change the fact they both still look like college freshman. Kids these days.

Painted Birkins

Have you ever asked yourself “How can I make one of my Birkins more unique?” It’s questions that plagues many of us, for sure. But ponder no longer, because Boyarde has provided an answer! Boyarde specializes in custom body- and birkin-painting (she’ll do any designer bags, actually). But what sets her apart from all the other “artists” slathering pain on the Holiest of Handbags and proclaiming artistic creation, is that Boyarde has skill. And it’s clear in her work, from the technique, and subject matter, to the mere placement on the bag, her Lichtenstein-esque renderings go far and beyond the average run-of-the-mill Birkin-Pollock impresario. The real questions that sits on my tongue, though, is how will this effect the bag’s value? Birkins are by far the best fashion investment a woman (or man) can make. Any faint hint of rarity or uniqueness nearly insures growth in second-hand value. We’ve seen many one-of-a-kind Birkins custom made by Hermès pass through auction houses and dealers with selling prices far above their off-the-rack counterparts. But does third-party customization increase value as well? Surely work done by well-known and revered artists would do the trick, as would well-publicized customizations, like those done by Lady Gaga. But could an artist whose main line of work stems from the bag actually ad value to the bag itself, or just novelty? It may be a while until we see a Boyarde-Painted Birkin on the block at Heritage Auctions, since it seems women willing to spend the money on customization are far less likely to part with their personalized trophy-bags. But I eagerly look forward to some light being shed on this facet of the Birkin marketplace.

Spring Accessories: Neckerchiefs

Have you ever thought to yourself “Gosh, aren’t scarves just the best? but I feel like a sissy wearing one! What ever can a boy like me do?” Well ponder no longer, neckerchiefs are your perfect springtime silken accessory to add a little fashion flair to you flapping, partially-unbuttoned chambray shirts. They’re simple to style, and easy to turn your back on too. If you get self conscious, just stuff it in your pocket (or underwear) and nobody will notice (or hopefully someone will). I kid. I do not condone crotch stuffing, it’s deceitful, and let’s face it, the truth is bound to come out. Anyways, neckerchiefs give you so many fabulous options for prints and materials, from cotton to silk to silk-cashmere, or whatever else you can find. They can be the perfect alternative use for a bright pocket square, and the ultimate cheap-as-dirt thrift store find. So tie one on and take a stroll, the neckerchief is dying to have its day in the sun!

Trend Alert: Bright Pants!

Have you ever gone out in a tight pair of pants and asked yourself “How can I draw more attention to my bottom half?” Well here is your answer: Bright Pants. Bright pants are perfect for any spring or summer day when you want to step out into the city and make people say “wow.” I personally have had many experiences with people shouting compliments from across the street, or even out of car windows as I strutted around in my pink, yellow, green, orange or red pants (and oddly I don’t think they were being facetious). But really, bright pants can be a great thing. They offset a simple pair of brogues nicely, and make it alright for you to wear more neutral tones on top. Let’s face it, dark pants with a bright top is so 2002. Nobody wants to look like some gaudy Italian who is stuck in the era of Tom Ford for Gucci. That look is done. But where are men to insert color into their summer wardrobes, if not through their shirts? Pants are certainly the boldest way (socks or small accessories can be way too subtle).

the best place to go for bright pants is, without a doubt, Bonobos. They have them in every imaginable color, shade, size and cut. But do yourself a favor and wait for the sales. In my experience, almost everything goes on sale at some point, and the brightest pants get marked down the most (like $20-$30 a pair).

WARNING: Patterned pants are not as easy to style as solid bright pants. If patterned pants are your chosen path, tread lightly, and consider your coordinating items very carefully.

Buy it Now: Biker Jackets

Black Leather. You know you want it, but you’ve never been brave enough to make the purchase. And now with the ever common $5,000 off the rack option (it seems like every brand has one, could this be menswear’s $10,000 RTW dress?), a black leather biker jacket may just seem impossible, impractical, and impersonal. But let me tell you, they’re not just for stick-thin French boys and beefed-up leather daddies anymore. A black leather biker is fast becoming the perfect go-to item to throw over a shirt and tie, or a crew-neck with jeans. And with the crazy weather changes as spring approaches, it may not be a bad idea to go looking for a well-priced piece; springtime-hopefuls will have already consigned theirs, but the impending mid-march snow storms and temperature drops will not render them useless for at least another month or two. Here are some tips for finding the perfect fit: 1) Beware of long arms, you may think that your arms look good with a little extra leather around them, but this will become very difficult the second you need to do something remotely agile with your hands (like light a cigarette). Go with wrist length sleeves in a supple leather. 2) Go for cropped. the shorter length will do everything for your figure: cinch your waist, visually improve your chest size, everything. And a longer biker will just make you look like the scrawniest member of Hell’s Angels. 3) Details. Go for an option with a little spunk. Maybe some spikes, patches, or buckles. Unless your buying new, clean simple leather will look slouchy and lumpy quickly. But texture, through quilting or zippers or safety pins, will easily counteract that.

Where to look: If money is no object, you probably already know where to look (but Dover Street Market and Barneys would be my go-to’s). If you’re looking in the $200-$500 range, try INA at 19 Prince Street. And if your really on a budget, you can’t beat No Relation in the east village at 204 1st Ave. Though you may have to sort through a number of racks there, you’d be hard-pressed to find a leather jacket for over $50.

Better Know a Gay Power Couple: Nate Berkus & Jeremiah Brent

This LA/NY designing duo have been making waves in the media lately. From their fairytale engagement atop Machu Pichu last year, to there LA home being featured in Harper’s Bazaar, to the recent Banana Republic add campaign the two starred in together, there adorableness is everywhere these days. With Nate buying and selling real estate in both home cities, and Jeremiah (struggling to) brand himself as an interior design on par with his man, it’s anyone’s guess where the couple is heading.

Berkus (42) and Brent (age indeterminate, I mean the guy looks 22, but he’s gay so he could be 32 for all I know. Guessing a gay’s age is almost as hard as guessing an Asian’s age, the tell-tale signs just aren’t there), are engaged (after only eight and a half months of dating) to be married this spring.

Buy it Now: Bucket Bags!

From miniature briefcases to over-sized clutches, the “It” man-bag of the season has always come out of left field. And this season is no different. For Spring 2014, you will be seeing all the chicest boys strutting around with their oh-so-trendy bucket bags. A long-time fashion faux-pas, bucket bags are coming back in a big way. Not only are they currently chic, but also very utilitarian. It is nearly impossible to fill up a bucket bag, you can literally fit almost anything in them. The majority of examples have long straps, too, which is perfect for cross-body carrying or a simple over-the-shoulder look. Your most classic bet will be the timeless Louis Vuitton Epi Noe bag. Originally designed to hold five bottles of champagne (how fabulous) , these bags come in all colors and sizes, and many different materials other than the eponymous Epi Leather. You’ll have descent luck find these babies in vintage and consignment shops too, the market is nearly flooded with them now. For a simpler, less recognizable (yet more expensive) option, try Hermès Picotin GMs or TGMs. Céline also makes some super chic versions as well.

Consider This: High-Waisted Pants

One quandary that plagues me daily is this: “What in the world can I do about my ridiculous birthing-hips?” Cover them up. Obviously. The best way to make anything look smaller and chicer is to swath it in either dark or luxurious fabric. High-Waisted pants will do just that for your hips. Pair them with a slim cut blazer and you’ll have the ultra-thin look of one of Hedi Slimane’s Saint Laurent Boys, only without the heroine addiction! Not only does a high waist minimize your hips, it also cinches in your waist and accentuates your package. Most men would be afraid of pants with a high waist. Very afraid. Because a high waist means another thing: a high reaching inseam. Therefore, gentlemen, you must pick a side, and many will be well aware of your choice. You must be aware yourself, though, of the limited choices of footwear allowed with high-waisted pants. You basically must chose between ankle boots with a bit of a heel, or well-structured brogues with a bit of a heel (The operative term there is “heel,” and make sure you go for a slender width as well). Also make sure your steer clear of boot-cut or flared leg pants in this category,because it is the fasted way to find yourself looking like a dirty hippie or disco aficionado who has not been shopping since the 70′s. Straight leg, or tapered are the only acceptable options, although skinny high-waisted pants will make you look like Kevin Bacon circa the mid-90′s (which is ok). I swear by them, and maybe you should give them try. Hip-Huggers are so 2007, don’t you agree?

Extend Your Legs! Try a Cuban Heel!

The main quandary that plagues me as I consider my body is this: How can I detract from my wide birthing-hips and make my fat legs look long and thin? The answer? High waisted pants and Cuban heels! It’s no secret that high heels make your legs look fabulous, and not just for women, the common men’s option is catching on quickly. Pelayo Diaz has been a big proponent, even going so far as to rock a pair of Chloé Susanna boots. But Cuban heels don’t just visually extend the leg, they also make you feel fabulous! Walking in heels makes you feel like a bad bitch with places to go and subordinates to stare down into submission. You might not feel much taller with the extra 2-3 inches, but you’ll look it, and you’ll walk it. Sassy power-walking is at it’s best in Cubans, and you can quote me on that, I wore down a pair of Louboutin Aoussams this past fall, so I’d know. They are also not as uncomfortable as you’d think. A bit of heel engages the whole leg, and the thinner width (which they usually have for visual balance) makes your feet feel well-held and secure (although think again if your doing serious distance walking). I, for one, have been on the lookout for another pair, since I sold mine in a moment of weakness, but the market is scarce, so I can only foresee a lengthy search ahead of me.

Trend Setters: Pelayo Diaz

Big Bold Jewelry. Not too long ago it was the “It” trend for women, but stylish Spaniard Pelayo Diaz is bringing it across the gender gap in a big way. His bold uses of chunky necklaces goes far beyond hip-hop inspired chains. Bold necklaces are the number one “go-for-it” accessory this spring, but be wary of spending too much on a piece, because in all likelihood, you’ll probably only get the courage to wear it once. Take a tip from Pelayo and pair your embellished bib with a simple collard shirt, this gives you the chance to hide most of the necklace under the collar if you get cold feet during the day. necklaces with a central pendant are good, because the centerpiece evokes the knot of a necktie, although pendant-less pieces work well to add even interest to your neckline. Go for color, gold, silver and clear crystal jewelry is still better left to the women, but be sure then that this is the only piece of jewelry you are wearing, otherwise your look will be just too much.

Beautiful Strangers

Do you ever see those guys on the street or on the subway who just catch your eye? The beautiful men who dress well and look so put together? The guys who you look up and down and say to yourself “He could get it”. We all see these guys, and the secret to their allure? It’s simpler than you’d think. They’re keeping their mouths shut. Nothing can spoil the fantasy of a perfect man like him opening his mouth. This is why so many pretty-boys are so popular on Instagram, because nobody is hearing them talk. The majority of people in the world tend to say stupid things, and the majority of men in the world do not have the alluring buttery deep voices that you would expect them to. On the flip side, intelligent and well-spoken men are attractive for that aspect alone, and good looks only add to their allure. But maybe you’re not so confident in your own linguistic ability. Worry not, just dress well and close your mouth. Before you know it, guys will be directing their day-dreaming gazes towards you too.

Fur For Thought

Ever thought about fur? Sure, maybe you’ve considered a fur hood, or a fur lined coat, or maybe even a big fur collar on an overcoat, but full fur coats are catching on for men in a big way. Not only are they fabulous, they’re fun too! And they represent just one more stab menswear is taking at the blatantly diverse world of women’s’ fashion (Aren’t you getting tire of the girls having all the fun fashion choices?). So go ahead and start thinking about a fur coat for next fall (Or the next polar vortex). As spring approaches, many fur coats will find themselves deep in the discount racks and aching to get out the doors of consignment stores. Don’t restrict yourself to only looking for “men’s” coats either, many women’s coats are made boxy and oversized so as to fit over sweaters and smaller jackets, and you’d be surprised at how a shorter sleeve can make so much difference in the feeling of a bulky coat; suddenly you’re not swimming in it anymore! It’s no secret that the Pop-of Color trend has kind of fizzled. The latest tides of fleeting color infatuation seem to do mostly with either all color or no color, a myriad of bright prints or a rainbow of gray. But what is there in between? The bright shirt is dead, it’s too early in the year for bright pants, and bright ties are just always obnoxious. Think low, go for the socks! Bright socks are the perfect way to add that extra something to your outfit, especially because they may not always be showing. It’s a peeking surprise for curious onlookers. So add a pop of sock to your outfit.

In the winter of 2012, I spent a month in Paris and fisherman sweaters were everywhere (especially turtlenecks). This past winter they’ve been showing up all over New York as well! I’ve seen them on gorgeous twenty-somethings in the East Village and gorgeous forty-somethings in the West village, on students uptown and fashionistos downtown. They are It, and now is the time to buy! At this point, many will be on sale, or showing in second-hand stores, and yet we can still anticipate enough cold in the future to justify the purchase. New York Magazine did a great article on them, cementing their stylish status, and everyone from Zara ($40) to The Row ($4,490) has produced their own version.

A Touch of Clutch

Guys’ clutch games have never been stronger than they are now. The trend has been growing for many seasons, but recently, men’s clutches are seeming the obvious choice of warm-weather accessories. In the winter you can easily keep all of you goodies in coat pockets, you’re going to look chunky no matter what so you might as well lean into it. But come spring, maybe you’ll be able to fit most things into blazer pockets, but that can only get you so far (and remember: never put anything in your pants pockets, this is quickest way to destroy the line of a well-toned leg). So go for a clutch! They’re so versatile and you’ll look like a total diva rifling through it to find your cigs or credit card. Clutches come in all shapes and sizes, and you don’t have to be confined to those made for men. In fact, the best clutches men can carry are those made for women! So hop on the bandwagon and add a touch of clutch to your wardrobe! (P.S. That gorgeous guy with the folded springbok clutch is me!).
