About me!
My name is Muskan, and I am proud and lucky I don’t have to switch between personalities at school and home and I’m in a community where the majority of people are accepted but I am also known as “normal” since I live in such a brown populated community.
Follow up Questions?
What are the steps to code-switching?
When did code-switching begin?
How can we overcome this issue?
Is there another way Starr could have approached this issue?
Credibility
I made sure my sources were credible by using the following criteria. I mostly checked to see if other sources agreed and they were up to date.
What I learned?
I learned a lot about code-switching, people don’t code switch because of popularity, they do it because they have limited opportunities, people don’t understand them, they are judged. After researching code-switching I was shocked to see that not much or anything at all, to be honest, is being done to stop this issue. Minorities face prejudice and whites are shown/known as superior, minorities try “acting white” so they can get better jobs, and be “normal”. Starrs worlds colliding had only benefited her, so people at Williamson can see her for the real her, and people know that Khalil was not just a drug dealer and had a life to.Â
If I face the truth, as ugly as it is, she’s right. I was ashamed of Garden Heights and everything in it. It seems stupid now though. I can’t change where I come from or what I’ve been through, so why should I be ashamed of what makes me, me? That’s like being ashamed of myself.” (Thomas 441)

Obama talking about how black boys in school are judged and the notion of black people acting white. The idea that if you're black you have to act a certain way!
What is currently being done to address this issue?
Code-switching and dual identity is a reality and not much is being done to address the issue. Code-switching occurs in certain situations such as being a minority in a school, or work and etc to gain success, equality, and acceptance. The best we can do is spread awareness to be united and support one another. Expressing your true colors and religion is the only way we can all gain success and improve together. Cardi B a famous singer refuses to change herself into what mainstream white America expects, she tends to keep her speech and suppresses her accent and talks about everything and anything she wants to. With such big people trying to end code-switching and the idea of dual identities we can all be accepted.

What is being done?
This video is about Rizz Ahmed a Muslim individual who experienced code-switching. Ahmed stated he made many switches with a traditional Pakistani household to a private school which consisted of white middle-class culture. He would change the way he speaks, and the way he dresses, he would wear salwar kameez at home, blazer and tie at school, Reebok classics, fake machinos to hang out with his friends. He had also made a short called “Daytimer” of a Muslim boy caught up with 90′s street culture to show how changing identities for a certain people or religion can get you caught up and make bad decisions.
Starrs dual identity
Hate U Give Quote 3
“The drug dealer. That's how they see him. It doesn't matter that he's suspected of doing it. “Drug dealer” is louder than “suspected” ever will be. If it's revealed that I was in the car, what will that make me? The thug ghetto girl with the drug dealer? What will my teachers think about me? My friends? The whole fucking world, possibly? “ (Thomas 113)
Worlds colliding and the truth coming out can be devastating and hurtful. Starrs Garden Heights identity will come out and Williamson Starr will be seen as the thug ghetto girl with the drug dealer. The thought of your two worlds colliding and assumptions of black people being drug dealers and ghetto is a big part of the reason why people code switch, black individuals want to be known as hard-working, normal, and clean rather than the ugly stereotypes they're given. Â
Quote 2
“Being two different people is so exhausting. I've taught myself to speak with two different voices and only say certain things around certain people. I've mastered it. As much as I say I don't have to choose which Starr I am with Chris, maybe without realizing it, I have to an extent. Part of me feels like I can't exist around people like him” (Thomas 357).
Code-switching is a reality for many, Starr fees that she needs to keep two of her lives separate therefore she is not judged. Starr feels that she needs to be like every other student at Williamson and cannot show any signs of being ghetto. You should be able to be yourself around your friends and boyfriend, your friends should be the ones comforting you, accepting you, and being there for you especially if you feel like the odd one out.
In this video, the ladies talk about how the color of their skin, affects them in different situations. We all talk about black people trying to act white so there not shown off as a threat, thugs or dangerous people but white people also tend to silence themselves, at 2:32 the lady feels that if she has something to say about an idea or movement such as Black Lives Matter, she will be criticized just because she's white.
