I want to take a moment to talk about this page. It’s a short conversation, but there’s a lot going on in just five panels. Great Granny and Jonathan are eating supper when Granny speaks up. She’s been dusting, and it sounds like she does this pretty regularly. By the way she speaks, it seems to be quite the difficult chore due to her arthritis, but she makes do.

Of course, this is just an excuse. She’s has no problem dusting, especially when she can use it as a cover up for her snooping. She’s been in Jonathan’s room, and suspecting that he’s hiding something from her, she looks under his bed to find a copy of James Joyce’s Ulysses. Interesting to note here, Jonathan was reading this book earlier today when some bullies attacked him and mocked his tastes in literature, calling him a Scarecrow.

Of course, those jeers are nothing compared to Great Granny’s punishments. And she immediately grills Jonathan, she accuses, in her own southern dialect, of masturbating over the more mature sections of the story. Now Ulysses does have some sexual content, but it is by no means a sexual story. This is quite a mature subject for a comic, but it works here.

Great Granny’s religious nature shines through in this instance, she thinks the worst of Jonathan and wants to punish him for his wrong doings, his sins. And his mere existence is a sin. Jonathan is the spitting image of his mother, a filthy sinner unworthy of the Keeny name. She hates him simply because he was won out of wedlock, one of the ultimate sins from a religious standpoint. She’d do her damnedest to find anything wrong with the child, and reading “sinful” literature is the perfect reason to punish him.
