GOT s8e5 quick reactions [SPOILERS]

SPOILER WARNING.

I had several predictions for this episode, but only two came true and they were quite obvious to everyone-- Varys’ death by dragon fire and Dany turning batshit insane and burning King’s Landing to the ground.

Everyone, including me, expected Varys to die this episode. I got a bit sad, but I’m at least happy with how he was executed. Tyrion was truthful to him, and Varys bade goodbye as an old friend. The whole sequence was shot beautifully, especially with Drogon appearing out from the darkness. I’m still unsure about the sincerity of his intentions (being a king/queenmaker “for the good of the realm”), but I’m ok with it left unanswered. Goodbye, Varys. I’ll rewatch the whole series soon so I’m looking forward to seeing you again.

I kinda wonder why he took out his rings, though. Is this like taking off your glasses and shoes when leaping from a building?

Tyrion letting Jaime free to save Cersei was frustrating to watch. I get he’s always loved his niece and nephews but goddamnit this is Cersei. I liked his farewell to Jaime, though, and I admit I teared up at that. 

After zombie Viserion’s attack on the Wall last season, I’ve been waiting to see Dany’s two other dragons showcase that same speed. This episode finally fucking delivered. I thought they’d never show it. It’s a bit weird that not one spear got Drogon, but I guess you can chalk it up to Drogon being so fast and the scorpions being so heavy to maneuver that despite their numbers, they can’t hit Drogon,

I was hoping for Yara to face off with Euron’s fleet. There’s just no other proper way for Euron to die or get defeated. I guess it’s budget restrictions that defeated Euron. Speaking of dead Euron, what the fuck was the point of him having a face-off with Jaime. That was lame and it felt fucking empty. Claims he killed Jaime Lannister but rubble killed him first. Also, what’s the glory in killing a handicapped person. They should’ve just let Euron get burned with his fleet as a captain should. Jaime’s injuries weren’t significant for anything anyway, because as i’ve mentioned, he died when the whole building collapsed,

I really like the build up of Cersei’s confidence in winning the fight vs Dany. Hell, I was kinda stressing last episode because how tf does Dany expect to win vs the Iron Fleet, all those scorpions, the Golden Company, with the people of King’s Landing being basically held hostage. And then everything went tits up in a matter of seconds LOL. This is why you just wave a damn flag at the sight of a damn dragon.

Side note, I like how it’s Dany this time who “opened the gate” for her army.

I have expected Dany to go a bit mad, because if I lost both my doggos and my best friend was killed, I’d burn that castle to the ground. I expected Dany to raze the Red Keep, civilians be damned. HOWEVER, I didn’t expect her to go full batshit INSANE and burn the WHOLE GODDAMN KING’S LANDING. That’s fucking too much girl you need the largest snickers bar or kitkat bar in the world. This move greatly shocked me, and it was so damn terrifying. Battle of the Bastards and Hardhome showed that war is insane and horrible, but this. This is giving me ptsd on the same level as joan of arc and all the other war movies I’ve seen gave me. It’s horrible enough that her army, including the fucking northmen, are killing and raping civilians. Now the “queen” herself is burning everyone and everything down. jfc.

There is no going back now. She will definitely die 1000%.

Side note I really like that both Jon and Arya are wearing the classic Stark leader hairstyle.

When Arya went with the Hound in the crumbling Red Keep, I was so afraid she’d die. But I’m glad Sandor gave her the “revenge will consume you” speech and Arya actually listened. I definitely don’t want Arya to die because of a falling rock fuck that.

Dead Qyburn ok

The Jaime-Cersei ending kinda left a bad taste in ma mouth. We went all through Jaime’s redemption arc only for him to be unable to let go of such a toxic person. I was hoping and praying he kills Cersei to stop her insanity but he just fucking went and attempted to save her and fucking hell. At least they died together as they always said they would. Pretty shitty that they got killed by rubble. Cersei didn’t get to pay for what she did to the damn Starks, among others.

That aside, I liked how we saw her fearful. I actually felt a bit sorry for her after she decides to escape wtih Qyburn. She’s a horrible damn person, but she’s not always that. Goodbye, great villain. Until the end you thought you were so smart. smh.

So. Cleganebowl. I wasn’t really into the CB hype, though for a moment I got worried that Sandor will get his head crushed and the Mountain will live. How tf do you kill the Mountain? Fire? Anyway, I’m not mad at how Sandor died. Could have been worse. I’m just glad he got to spend some time with Arya and he got a bit of a reunion with Sansa, even though the rape thing was a dick move. RIP Sandor.

The ending bit with Arya made me so tensed. I thought she was going to die suddenly, or she’s already dead and it’s just her ghost heading to that deus ex horse. Nothing bathed in that much light is “safe” in GOT. Buuuuut I guess this is one fan favorite that you can’t kill. At least, not yet. I’m relieved she didn’t die tho.

With Jon--  the other hero of GOT and Dany’s rival to the throne-- and Arya seeing all the carnage of Dany’s attack on a city that has rang its bells as a sign of giving up, there’s no way not one of them is going to execute Dany.

If Dany doesn’t die at the end of this series, it’s a great fucking TV sin. Thousands of innocents died. Eye for an eye, sure. Kill Cersei’s “dragon” (baby) and her best friend (sure, Jaime). But burning all those people who had nothing to do with your fight? Girl you’re crazy and you must be stopped.

It’s tragic, but it’s a pretty good end for a character in the world of Game of Thrones.

[spoilers] Jon and Ghost

Easy to say that Jon sending Ghost north of the wall to be where he belongs is him letting go of his identity as a Stark (you fucker how dare you) and embracing being a Targaryen since he’s heading down south.

HOWEVER, if you think about it, Jon is returning what is owed to Dany, and in the latest war council, he says the north will support Dany’s cause. Bastard is riding south as a representative of the North aka as a fucking Stark.

That said, Jon making Ghost go north of the wall can also be a foreshadowing. I’ve always thought Jon’s ending as him heading North of the wall and staying there (even wondered if through some pact or selt-sacrifice he inadvertently becomes the next Night King, but that’s impossible now that everything “magical” is going away/dying in the world of GOT tv series).

Anyway, I think we can all agree that the biggest offense this season, if not the whole series, is Jon not even giving his goodest boi one last pet. How dare you, Jon Snow. How dare you.

The next Night King

I’d be a little pissed off if it turns out Benjen Stark actually survived season 7 and then becomes the next Night King at the very end of the TV series.

I’m assuming the children stabbed him with a dragonglass dagger the same way the Night King was created because they knew (or were told) that he’d serve great purpose (saving Bran and then saving Jon). He wasn’t created to become a weapon, unlike the Night King we know. There’s absolutely no reason for him to become the NK.

Prophecies, Foreshadowing, and Arya Stark

MAJOR SPOILER WARNING FOR GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8 EPISODE 3.

Disclaimer 1: I love love love GOT theories. My youtube history should be plenty of proof for that. Like many others, I was hoping Jon Snow will be the one to kill the Night King. It just made perfect sense.

Disclaimer 2: That said, once Bran told Arya in season 8 episode 2 “No One has tried”, I was mind blown. I was about 80% sure it would be Arya who would deal a major damage to the Night King (not final blow), or would be the boldest and capable enough outside Jon Snow to go one on on with him.

Now that those disclaimers are done, I have a bold confession to make: it gives me great pleasure seeing the bitching and moaning about episode 3 because all the Night King-related prophecy and foreshadowing for Jon and even Dany went down the drain. Don’t get me wrong; as shocked and delighted I was to see Arya kill the Night King, I was also very much confused. Everyone-- including I-- believed it would be Jon Snow.

The knee-jerk reactions were so entertaining to read online. Some of them actually had valid points. Like I said, because of all the prophecy and how the story and characters developed, it made so much sense that Jon Snow would be the one to end the long night. But the anger of some of them, nitpicking every little thing about the episode, is almost as entertaining as the episode itself.

So how can a disappointed fan of Game of Thrones do as Sansa said and “face the truth”? Here’s how:

This is a TV series adaptation for an unfinished source material. That should already be a big indication that some things just aren’t going to go by what you have theorized will happen.

John Snow has the prophecies, but Arya has pretty good circumstantial events backing her major kill.

Jon Snow gifted her Needle, basically supporting what Arya wants to do and become. In a way, Jon was one of the major reasons how Arya became a formidable assassin.

Melissandre once told Arya something like she’d be shutting brown, green, and blue eyes forever. Easy to dismiss the eye colors as people in Arya’s list and people who will get in her way. By chance, the blue eyes referred to the Night King himself.

Bran gave her the catspaw dagger-- a weapon used in an attempt to kill him. Easy to dismiss its purpose once Littlefinger has been disposed of using that same dagger; but poetically, it has now been used to save Bran’s life.

Adding to the above, Bran gave her the dagger at Winterfell’s godswood, under the weirwood tree where Arya eventually stabbed the Night King.

Arya is an assassin. As we have seen throughout the seasons, facing the Night King head on is futile-- the horde of undead is just too much. Fuck, Jon had a hard time when he was faced with one of the White Walkers. So if you can’t kill NK face to face, what better way than to have a freakin assassin do the job.

Following the above, years back, Syrio Forel made Arya chase cats as part of her swordfighting lessons. She must be swift and quiet if she wants to succeed. THIS IS HOW SHE GOT PAST THROUGH ALL THE WHITE WALKERS AND WIGHTS. Fuck, if she wasn’t screaming as she leapt, the Night King would most likely not have sensed her until it was too late.

If you still can’t believe it, jfc go back to the library sequence where she was so quiet, only the blood dripping from her made a noise. Also go back to her and Jon’s reunion where Jon was surprised that Arya had snuck up on him.

Last but not the least, Arya is a STARK. Had it been a non-Stark who had killed the NK, it would be extra bullshit, since the Starks have the major responsibility of protecting everyone from the NK and the undead.

I might have missed some things, but those are a pretty good start.

I have to admit, I still wish we got to see Jon fight the Night King. Doesn’t matter if Jon won or lost, so long as they fought. I was also wondering if, by some cruel twist of fate, Jon becomes the next NK or just heads north north after the NK’s death to make sure there’s no more long “winter” to come.

As for "The Prince/Princess That Was Promised”, this is a reach but there’s still a way for it to be fulfilled. The war could be the war with Cersei (it’s a major war anyway) and it could be a metaphorical ‘darkness’, not the literal one brought on by the NK.

Oh well. I’m still looking forward to the last three episodes of GOT, and I hope we get a satisfying-- albeit bittersweet-- conclusion to this amazing series like we had with the MCU.

Thor’s (soft) Reboot

Contains some spoilers for Infinity War.

I’m really glad Thor Ragnarok took a Guardians of the Galaxy-level of tone. When I first saw Thor Ragnarok, I was only mildly interested. The first two Thor films were forgettable for me, and really the only things I took away from them is that if you want to find an Infinity Stone, stay with the Asgardians. They had three come their way.

Though the trailer looked interesting, I wasn’t hyped up enough to see it in the theaters because as I’ve mentioned, Thor really wasn’t that much interesting even in the Avengers and Age of Ultron, and same goes for Banner who also has kinda surface level conflict and they barely had any satisfying character development. Only the fanart and memes made them funnier and more interesting, and even then, they’re both projected as hammy, loud, and hilariously obnoxious caricatures. “I LIKE IT! *SMASH* MORE!” “HULK SMASH!” “LOREAL COMMERCIAL!”

When I finally got to watch it, damn I wish I went to the theater. The visuals are so much the opposite of the previous two Thor films which are mostly drab and underwhelming. It was colorful, so much so that it’s close to ridiculous, and they’ve upped the comedy in the screenplay and threw out eye-rolling seriousness that had previously contributed to the feeling that superhero movies are becoming stale.

Thor also got a more interesting group, reuniting with Loki and having newcomers ‘Valkyrie’, Korg (and Miek), and of course, his frenemy the Hulk. 

Valkyrie is fantastic, going from the drunk who doesn’t care about Asgard any longer to facing her trauma and fears and helping Thor and friends defeat Hela. Plus, she might be on her way to becoming Thor’s new love interest, but I’m so glad there are only small bits here and there but the romance isn’t shoehorned nor forced in the movie. 

Korg is just absolutely funny and likable, silly but genuinely friendly and ready to extend a hand to strangers. 

Loki had another chance to redeem himself, and the development of his and Thor’s relationship was really good in this film. The acceptance Thor has and him finally learning his lesson and managing to outsmart Loki for once were fantastic. I really thought Loki would die for real in this movie especially since he pulled the “Oh! I’m not really dead!” card once, but I’m kinda still glad he’s alive. Would be better if he died, but after all that Thor went through in losing both his parents, his closest friends, and Asgard, for his sake I’m glad Loki survived this film. The relief is short-lived however, but I’m still glad he and Thor managed to make up and have a couple of hours as genuine brothers before Thanos came knocking. Have some tissue ready in Infinity War if you’re a fan of Loki.

And then there’s the Hulk, who finally has more speaking lines and graduating from his usual HULK SMASH mode. His inner conflict is much more interesting now, because you see both Bruce Banner AND the Hulk’s sides in why they should be the one in control. The scenes where Thor is trying to convince both (on separate occasions) that they’re the one he likes and needs more are some of the funniest in the movie.

And then there’s Thor. Or as he likes to refer to himself, GOD OF THUNDERRR!!

As I’ve mentioned before, Thor didn’t have much to him other than large biceps, occasional humorous quips, his hammer, occasional lightning, and his hamminess since he’s a ‘god’ and he’s working with people who are "so petty... and tiny.” Makes for funny fanart, comics, and memes, but as a character he’s pretty meh.

Thor Ragnarok changed that and I’m so happy for Chris Hemsworth for finally getting better material for his character, and for Thor fans who want to see more out of him and what having an alien main character can bring into the movie. He didn’t change completely, but he shone so much more in this movie. That change of course continued on to Infinity War, and seeing him smiling while tearing up at remembering his loss is so much more heartbreaking. I kinda doubt the old Thor would act the same way. Plus, the slight change in his character made him mash well with the Guardians of the Galaxy, even with characters like Rocket (and Groot).

I’m not going to detail Thor: Ragnarok even more especially since there are lots of great reviews and analysis out there already. But I just gotta say one more time: this movie was awesome and ridiculous and a great soft reboot to the Thor movies, and I’m really happy with the direction MCU took Thor with. He’s a freaking ‘god’. You don’t sideline a ‘god’ just like that.

If you’re a fan of Thor, you HAVE to see Infinity War as well. You’ll be very much pleased, trust me.

Science Family

I'm really looking forward to the great team up of Tony Stark, Shuri, Bruce Banner, and Peter Parker.

But what I like the most is Shuri and Tony have their specialties that, when combined, will surely create even more awesome things. Shuri is absolutely great with vibranium tech, while Tony is awesome with energy and AI.

There HAS to be collab scenes with Shuri and Tony. Plus, Tony's gonna surely suffer (even if only just a bit; I'd love to see his eyes rolling in exasperation lol) because Shuri loves pranks and she's sassy. He can't walk all over her like he does to Steve and other people.

Pleeeeeease make it happen, MCU ;u;

Maybe because I rarely see or hear people of my race (brown (Malay) Asian) normally wear wigs and weaves, but I saw that scene in the movie as Okoye reacting badly to the wig because she's a member of the Dora Milaje and all the soldiers/guards in that group have pretty badass patterns on their shaved heads. I saw that as Okoye being so proud of her status that it irritates her that she has to "hide" a part of who she is. Plus, it's probably her first time wearing a wig and so obviously she's not used to it yet. Probably not used to any headdress either, seeing as they don't normally wear helmets.

Good news: Sequel is really here.

Bad news: It's NOT directed nor written by Guillermo del Toro. I wonder how much of the material he had previously written made it into Uprising. IMDB's list has him only as a producer.

Good news: Mako, Newt, and Gottlieb are still here.

Bad news: papa Stacker and papa Herc aren't. Funny guy Tendo isn’t, either.

Good news: I see a lot of non-white people in the cast (based on IMDB).

Bad news: Nothing in relation to that, unless the movie proves me wrong. Yaay!

I gotta say, though. Pacific Rim (2013)'s trailer had more drama, felt the world was really in danger, and the story looked more interesting. Plus they had that cheesy tag line of Stacker Pentecost haha

Now for the questions:

1) Is Ron Pearlman gonna come back as Hannibal Chau?

2) Is Mako now the head of the Jaeger Program? I really hope so, but wiki has another person that has the title “Marshal” ;_;

3) The Jaegers are supposed to be retiring in the story of Pacific Rim. Then the pilots defeated the kaiju by closing the Breach. Shouldn't that success be reason enough to fully retire the jaegers since there aren't any kaiju left to fight? But lo and behold, ten years later, jaegers are doing flips and shit and they don't seem to be burdened by their own weight. I'd understand if they're jaegers made by the "enemy", but these are jaegers used by the jaeger program as well. Unless their manufacturer is the enemy but they had no idea they had plans to use kaiju or something.

I hope the music for Uprising is as epic as Pacific Rim’s. I really like the main theme of the first film.

RWBY Volume 5 FINALE (SPOILERS) - First Impressions

CONTAINS SPOILERS. YOU’VE BEEN WARNED.

No major fight. They’ve poured everything in the previous episode. I don’t mind, though, because the maidenVSmaiden fight was pretty great (in RWBY standards) and for a series with short run times, I expected the finale to be all wrapping up and tying (some) loose ends. HOWEVER, Ruby made big talk about being ‘angry’ but there’s nothing to show it. And they cut out a tag-team fight with Ruby, Weiss, and Blake. THAT’S THEIR FIRST TAG TEAM AFTER A LONG TIME COME ON.

I still can’t get over the fact that there were barely any people in Haven. Atlas better have lots of people in the background. You’d think the population of Haven is less than a hundred, and most of them are in Raven’s tribe.

I really like the resolving of Yang’s search for her mother and their relationship in this season. Now they’re on the path of Raven’s redemption, and I’m looking forward to what she’ll do in the next seasons. I have a feeling she won’t show up in volume 6, or if she did, it’ll be in the finale. I also expect her to die, but if ever she does, I hope it was right after another epic fight, but not with Cinder. I still hate that bitch.

Speaking of Cinder, I hope she only appears in Volume 6 post-credits as being alive. Or push her to Volume 7. I really don’t like her especially her maiden power-absorbing agenda.

Speaking of maidens, I really, REALLY hope that at least one member of Team RWBY becomes a maiden. Of course not Ruby, she already has silver eyes which haven’t been explained (I’m glaring at you, Ozpin). I’m really hoping for Weiss becoming the winter maiden. Bias aside, it fits her PERFECTLY.

I’m still wondering why Weiss’ sister “Winter” is named “Winter”. Just a red herring? Anyway I’m looking forward to everyone heading to Atlas. Political tension is huge in that place, and Ironwood has been frustrated with Ozpin for some time. And of course there’s Weiss family.

RWBY Volume 6 wishlist:

Weiss family reunion, no matter how messy it is 

More Winter appearances, and make them significant even if tied to Ironwood

Speaking of Winter, a rematch between her and Qrow. Major points if they end up tag-teaming a powerful grimm. I don’t want wet blanket Ironwood to disturb them again.

Perhaps a Penny 2.0 and introduction of her ‘father’

Return of Roman and Neo

Return of GLYNDA GOODWITCH I MISS HER BRING HER BACK. She’s my favorite adult in RWBY and it’s been so long since her last appearance which was cleaning up rubble and repairing buildings at Vale huhuhu

Emerald character development. She thinks Cinder is dead. This is great opportunity to show more of her distant past, not-so-long-ago past, and then how she changes for the future.

An explanation of Ruby’s silver eyes argh

Fight scene with that “Doctor” lackey of Salem. Perhaps a re-appearance of the crazy scorpion maniac. Ooooh he could butt in while Qrow’s having a rematch with Winter, and then Qrow and Winter in turn will tag-team against him. Based on what happened last time, Qrow could use some help.

A conflict of who gets to dominate the body-- Ozpin or Oscar. It will be real scummy of Ozpin if Oscar gets punted aside (or worse, “consumed” or “eliminated”) once his body and skills are perfect enough for Ozpin.

In connection to the previous wish, it would be great if we get to see who Ozpin’s previous body was (one he had in Vale as the headmaster of Beacon)

RWBY Volume 7 wishlist

More information/update on the relic at Beacon Academy, if it is even there

Raven reappearance and perhaps reconciliation between her and Yang

Maybe the retaking of Beacon Academy, though I have a feeling that will be in Volume 8 *sigh*

Salem finally steps out of her ‘safe zone’, perhaps in the finale.

Another relic found, of course, but it’s ok whether it goes to Ozpin’s team or Salem’s. Gotta make the odds equal or stacked against the heroes. Perhaps Salem can have a relic while Ozpin gets a maiden, or vice versa.

If team RWBY gains a maiden, team Salem gets one too apart from Cinder.

Perhaps another third party that could swing either way, like the White Fang.

The Dark Tower (2017)

I'm conflicted. I liked Jake, because the actor was pretty good, but at the same time, I feel like he should have died even when the Gunslinger has saved him. It's the chance for the Gunslinger to prove that he HAS changed-- that he'd follow the "good" route instead of the selfish route that he's followed after the death of his father. Also, Jake didn't have any character development, which is a bummer.

Another thing that I'm concerned with is the Dark Tower itself. It's so far from the characters that I don't really feel the weight of it falling, especially when we never see another monster again after that first attack on Jake and Roland, and no other characters concerned about it apart from the villagers. Compare that to Isengard or Sauron's tower, where at least we see that the enemy resides there, and the heroes actually arrive at that place and confront the main enemy somehow. We have no other physical connection with the tower apart from those beams firing from Walter's hideout.

The movie needs more worldbuilding, but as it looks like a standalone especially with the death of the Man in Black, looks like it's not really written to have a sequel.

I think I kinda understand the disappointment of viewers in the movie, and I'm glad I haven't read the book so I don't have that extra disappointed feeling as a reader/fan of the series.

[side note: that hallucination scene with Jake's real dad was hella Pennywise MO; the easter egg should've warned me already. I got freakin chills seeing that.]

The Dark Tower (2017) and my dilemma

Shit. Shitshitshit. I know what I though of is not an original concept (I'd be shocked if anything I made is one), but I was quite dumbfounded to find out the serious consequence of the "Dark Tower" falling, particularly in the part where the kid and Idris Elba encountered monsters trying to get through the 'tear'.

See, I haven't read Stephen King's The Dark Tower series; I've only heard of the title and that it was more than 5 books. Nothing about the plot nor the characters.

On NaNoWriMo 2012, I wrote about a story that started with the falling of a newly-constructed tower (no meaning on the tower itself), some tremors that came with it, and the reason for its fall-- someone's been tampering with the boundaries of the different 'planes'-- human plane, spirit plane, and monster plane. So 'tears' (called 'gates' no matter how sanctioned they are or not) are popping up everywhere despite magical safeguards, and monsters are coming through those 'gates'.

This is one of my fears as a writer-- that something in my story is so much alike an established story's that I haven't actually read, and I might get accused of plagiarism.

It probably shouldn't be something to be worried about, but damn. I panicked for a couple of minutes there.

If there’s one thing that I can relate to COMPLETELY in Gintama, it’s this scene.

I’ve actually made a comic about my childhood habit of singing when going somewhere alone at night, especially the bathroom. So when I saw that gintama episode and read the chapters, I was laughing like hell while cringing at the same time. My songs were complete nonsense though.

Downsizing feels really great. It’s hard, especially when you consider how things might be useful in the future, but really it’s all junk you won’t ever use again. Hell, it hasn’t seen the light of day for years, so why should you let it take up space, right?

I asked dad to bring my bookshelf downstairs so I can have enough space for a large desk. Both he and the house help couldn't fathom how the hell I managed to bring it upstairs, and either of them couldn't remember helping me push and pull it upstairs, dinging the top side corner because there's barely any space to move it around. Dad then decided to have it go through one of the second floor windows to the balcony and then bring it down with ropes and more people. Good luck with that, especially since he's not here tomorrow to do it with them. My room now looks so spacious, but at the same time it feels kinda empty. A bit of a bummer that I have to walk downstairs to get my books, but in exchange for a large work desk with additional shelves I guess it's a minor inconvenience.
