Fun Fact Hollywood Edition

Hollywood first began exhibiting presidential speeches as a way to challenge the limits of censorship administered by the supreme court and censorship boards.

Mutual v Ohio denied free speech to the movies in 1915, but this was when they were silent. So when sound came into play Hollywood used Herbert Hoover's 1928 nomination acceptance speech as a means to call into question the constitutionality of censoring the screen!

Unfortunately WarnerBros gave in and their attempt at a challenge failed. But the incident provides a glimpse into the state of the times ... What material is "appropriate" should Hollywood be grated the same freedom of expression as the stage and news? All issues that were being debated and point to the assumed cultural impact of the movies.

So next time you see a speech or a debate exhibited, remember Hollywood's roots and why they really started showing them in the first place!
