if there is something that moves humanity forward, that is humanity itself. people make people dream, fight, stay, go away, love, regret, believe, feel alive... and feel like home. 

in this week's episode we will try to define home as people —or, as our title suggests, we are home— with the help of nina, who was born in morocco and has spent three years attending college in seoul. from feeling too much to how hard goodbyes are, going through the importance of friendship and the way it can shape you, this episode is a particularly intense one. you have been warned.

until now, we have tried to define home by taking guesses on what it is. but what happens when the thing you feel is that your home /isn't home/?

jasmine has lived her whole life in the philippines, but her family and passport tell the world she is from korea. now that she has moved to seoul in order to pursue her studies, the feeling of homeless-at-home strikes harder than ever. together we'll talk about the obstacles in belonging, getting lost in the streets in order to call them yours and the parallel narratives that help you hold on.

when we say we /feel/ at home... what do we mean?

as an exchange student, sonia felt seoul so much like her home that she just knew it wasn't her last time there. with her major in english studies finished, she has come back to (metaphorically) star in her own coming-of-age movie and is ready to get all emotional about the people she has left behind, the ones she found here, the places that bring her comfort, the memories that help her to hold on and, most of all, the feelings all of them are capable of arising.

'Window (the dark one) is about how it feels finally to be at home within your body, a brief glimpse to a colorful world, far from the storm, that I feel I’m finally reaching.

El Mar Mayor (the lighter one) is pretty much self explanatory: places, voices, people that feel like home and how I feel between worlds. I’ve spent almost half my life surrounded by water and the other in dry (really dry) land, and a part of me will always be in the Netherlands. It means to live everyday feeling homesick, never truly calm. But this sea, this waves are the closest I’ve ever been to feel at peace'.

'Having suffered from depression and anxiety for much of my life, change has never been an easy process. Moving to a new city has been especially challenging, and feelings of vulnerability and insecurity have plagued my past few months. Part of this change, however, has been forming new friendships and support systems, as represented by this painting. I have known Katie, the subject of this portrait, for only a few months, but her brazen spirit and unwavering kindness has shone through our friendship this short period of time. The deliberate choice of leaving the painting looking unfinished was not only a challenge for my perfectionism, but more importantly, a symbolic representation of new friendships - never fully “completed”, there will always be room to create new memories. So what is home? Home is not always a place. Home is the people that make you happy and comfortable. Home is friendship'. here in the homesick project we take friendship /very seriously/, so this amazing piece by yvonne tan (@yvonne.journals on instagram) is especially meaningful for us ❤️

we all miss home at some point. during my childhood, the mere though of being far from mine would drown me alive.

but... what was home, exactly? a blur of comfortable feelings? my family? the eight floor balcony where i gazed at the stars when i was a kid?

as of today, i still haven’t figured it out. 

and when i decided to be part of an exchange program and live for four months in seoul, korea, i thought… maybe that was the perfect place to start an investigation. one in the shape of an eight-episode podcast + virtual zine.
