THINKING ABOUT MY WEBSITE

We would take a look on some examples of websites an critique them based on various categories. I will also talk about some ideas that I want for my website.

SECTION A:

QUESTIONS FOR ANALYSIS: http://trendlines.ca/

1. In the “trendlines” website, the balance of this site is completely terrible; the author of this site did not even attempt to display the text accordingly to match and compliment the main page. Everything looks like one big block of text behind a background that has way too many colors just enough to give someone a headache.

2. The contrast that is used in this website, is completely outdated. The text resembles to the text from windows 97, and to say the least this text is over all over the place. Some of the text is in different color which does not match at all with the background, the text is even different font sizes for each section of the main page.

3. This website does not apparently have good consistency since some of the text is different sizes in each section of the home page.

4. I can use the alignment and grouping to make this website cleaner and easily understandable. If this website featured more interactive options to navigate the site, it could turn out to be more user friendly.

5. This site lacks effectiveness and could use more work into making the website appealing to the audience. If this website can have all these principles improved, the site could use more tweaks to transform from an outdated website to a modern and improved technological website.

1. For the website “Aaron Marquez” this website is properly laid out with many interactive and user friendly. The author of this website has used techniques that can be appealing to the audience such as the alteration of brightness and darkness, the transitions to the different sections of the webpage are very well animated.

2. The contrast that is used in this website, is modern and vibrant. The images and animations complement the main page to the extent that the audience can reflect their attention to this website.

3. The website uses good consistency, the text is mostly thin, and however this works by integrating the text into the background where the transitions can freely animate the text.

4. I could use minimal tweaks and adjustments to clean up this website by adding more redirections to specific portals. Some of the animations and transitions can be too much to handle in the internet, therefore not making this website as user-friendly as it should be

5. This site has much effectiveness for its own theme, it does not need much as to only having a specific theme available to the audience. I think that this website does a good job in making this sort of mechanism more appealing to the audience.  

SECTION B: 1. I will have to ensure that my website is user friendly, I would want to add some animations between sections of the website. Another good idea is to make the images used in my website more interactive, I would want to achieve as much balance towards my website by synthesizing the text corresponding to the specific features that serve different functions.

2. I will make sure that I can keep an efficient contrast by manipulating the text and be precise to how I actually use the text and what I use it for. I could match the text accordingly to its theme and I can format the text to fit the background and design elements.

3. I could be able to use good consistency by preventing the over- usage of animations or transitions that might cause issues while navigating the website. The text that I will most certainly use will be one type of text that remains the same in every section of the webpage, but will either italicize of bold on some particular sections of information.

4. I could use minimal tweaks and adjustments to align text as efficiently as possible according to the page layout of my theme. I think that following a specific theme should not alter the elements of text and design to make it abstract, being creative and original should be an effective process to creating a website that could appeal to the audience.

5. I will most likely use dark colors mainly because I think that bright colors will affect the audience by making visual effects less appealing. Dark colors can blend with the sight of the audience to the point where they are comfortable navigating the website.

6. I can ensure that my website is well designed by practicing how to integrate visual effects, animations, transitions, and images. I think that by adding some small elements of design and structure, the website should be that most appealing that it can be.

I hadn’t thought about what type of images I wanted to use but you mentioned interactive images which is a very good idea! The picture of your website that you included at the end of your post looks really good. It also gave me a clear picture as to how a website looks. #Week 14: Thinking about our Website

PART A

Website Analysis

First site: http://trendlines.ca/

1. The first site didn’t have a clear balance. It had a giant image and not much text throughout the website. The second site did have a good balance. Each image had a clear description. The balance between images and text was even throughout the site.

2. Contrast is employed in this site by having different text throughout the site. The text in the heading section of the site is one font and size and the rest of the site is a different one. The second site had different text throughout the site but in a clear and uniform manner. If the heading was one font the next heading would be the same font. This tend continued throughout the other sections of the site. 

3. The first site greatly lacked consistency. It seemed that everything was thrown on the page without having a clear pattern. The second site shows good consistency. Everything seems well thought out and has a clear pattern to it. 

4. The first site has no clear alignment or grouping. There is one giant picture off to the side and text all around but they have different font. The second site has good grouping and alignment. The website was very well made to have clear sections and good grouping and alignment. 

5. The first site is not very effective due to the fact that the website is very unorganized. The second website gets the message across clear since the overall message can be seen through out the entire site.

 PART B

1. I will ensure that my website has a balance between images and text. If there is an image I will make sure to have a good description to even out the text.

2. In my website I will apply contrast by having different fonts for the heading and body sections. The title will also have a different fonts from the rest of the website. 

3. I will apply consistency within each section. The first page will have a clear pattern and the rest of the pages will follow the same pattern.

4. By making sure the alignment and grouping are working to benefit my website I will align everything to the same side. This will happen all though out the website. 

5. The colors that I will use for my website are black or white font depending on the background. For the background I will use white, black, or grey.

6. I will make sure that everything has a section to go into. Each section will be well organized and thought out carefully. They will each follow the same pattern and have the same fonts within the section.

#WEEK13

Lets start this…

a.       What days and times will you commit to the project?

I will commit to the project on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Fridays from 12 pm to 3 pm. Also with my team, we decided to meet on Thursday and maybe on the weekend, to make sure we all understand what we have to do and to gather the information of each other.

b.      What days/times are you working as a group and when will you work alone?

So my team and I decided to meet on Thursday, so we can decide on what do we want to with the video, also to gather the information we all have, like the interviews, lit reviews, etc. I will be working alone on Tuesday and Friday from 12 to 3 pm to make sure to edit and to keep adding to the video.

c.       Specifically, what aspect of the project will you address on each of those days?

Well on our first meeting we will share our information and talk about what we want to achieve for the video. On our free time I will look for some videos, images, quotes and will go through my information to get the best possible. I will address the inequalities that women are facing in the society now in days, like gender pay gap. As well as some consequences because that what my research was throughout the semester. We will eventually gather most of the information as we meet so we can check bullets from the checklist.

d.      Specifically, what will you do to complete those aspects of the project?

Read through the projects of my teammates to fully understand their point of view of the issue and how to tackle it. Also do more research on what to add to the video to successfully use ethos, pathos and logos to finally achieve the goal. For example here is a video that I will possibly use

e.      What specific aspects of the assignment are you most concerned about? What can you do to address those concerns?

I am most concerned about the solution we will have to implement, since none of us have actually talked about it just yet. Also I am concerned that we might not get into an agreement for it. However, I believe that all of us want this issue of women in STEM to change. So I am pretty sure that after all we will implement an excellent solution for this problem that might not tackle the whole issue but part of it.

f.       What specific aspects of the assignment are you most comfortable with? Why?

I am most comfortable with the issues that women are facing because that is most of my research and I truly believe women deserve the same as men. Since my peers and I have different research questions I am sure that all of them will cover most of the topic, and that also makes me comfortable. I am also very comfortable with all the statistics and interviews because as I said before all of them have different information that will be very useful for our project.

I believe that we can come to a consensus on the solution if we all put our heads together. I liked you addressed the fact that we each have different research questions. Wrapping up the film

A. I will commit time to he documentary on Monday and Wednesday from 12-3 pm. B. The group has agreed to meet on Thursday and the weekend. We will discuss the documentary and work on it as a whole during these times. C. We will address the documentary as a whole. We will see the parts that we have worked on individually and figure out how to organize them into a cohesive product. D. We each will put in some research and look over our previous assignments to find appropriate information. If we need to find more information we each will look up items and then discuss them when the entire group is together. E. I am most concerned about the editing of the documentary. None of us have really made a movie before so I think that will be the most difficult part. F. I am most comfortable with the research part since I have done research before. I know how to look for appropriate information and apply it to a certain topic.

#Week12

WOMEN IN ENGINEERING

Part 1

Topic: Women Diversity in STEM

Purpose: Influence women to join STEM and to change the perspective people have of this fields.

Audience: Women and men interested in joining STEM majors or that are currently enrolled on the program. Middle school - College students.

Solution: Equality is the key, present to kids toys that can be for anyone, do not discriminate.Presenting Scholarships and programs that will let little girls enter the STEM world. Make women aware that they are just as women and that they deserve the same as men.

Part 2 

Pathos:

“Engineering is perceived by many for an area for men and that is the problem, it’s a perception.” (Villanueva, 2016)

As stated in this quote by one of my interviewees, engineering being a men only field is just a perception and that is a problem. Without a change of perspective there will not be any more innovation, since people is forced to think according to the society and with the traditions we were raised. However, as this quote of Viktor Frankl says “When we are not longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves”( Frankl). So women should not be afraid of what engineering is, instead they must be motivated and for that we need to see all the inventions and achievements made through engineering…

Advocacy:

To create a change we need to make women aware that they are important for the community just as men, and that not only to grown women but also to little girls. Since kids girls are presented with delicate and “girly” things such as dolls and house related stuff. However, now in days society tell us that equality is the new thing so why not start with careers. As Dr. Villanueva said women doesn't fight for more they are always okay with what they receive, however, men always think they deserve more and that is why there is a lot of distinction. Women need to learn how to get what they deserve!

“Females don’t negotiate, we are not trained to ask for more, maybe we think we don’t deserve more, or maybe just don’t know how to negotiate, and men always believe they deserve more”(Villanueva, 2016)

“STEM is the areas where is going to be more innovation, it’s the future technology, and you need to have a broad perspective”(Villanueva, 2016)

Hello Itzel! I really enjoyed your post and thought it was really well organized. Your quote for the pathos section was very interesting and opened my eyes. I never thought it was just a perception but that does make a lot of sense. The advocacy section was very interesting and matched what my research has been explaining. Many women don’t feel encouraged or aren’t praised enough for their hard work. This is something that has to be changed for the diversity to increase. Overall good job on your post! I believe we have a great start on what our documentary is going to have.

#Week 12

Women in Engineering

Part 1

Topic: Women Diversity in STEM

Purpose: Influence women to join and remain in STEM as well as change the view of the community.

Audience: Women in or thinking about joining STEM fields, as well as men in the field. Beginning in grade school all the way to the work force.

Solution: More encouragement for all people, not just men. Young girls don’t get encouraged to go into math or science fields and are encouraged to go into what society sees as a “girls” profession. Scholarships and organizations help with the encouragement but more needs to be done to increase the diversity within the field.

Part 2

Pathos

“Engineering is the most male-dominated field in STEM. It may perhaps be the most male-dominated profession in the U.S., with women making up only 13% of the engineering workforce.” (Silbey 2016)

“Women make up 20% of engineering graduates, but it’s been estimated that nearly 40% of women who earn engineering degrees either quit or never enter the profession.”  (Silbey 2016)

There is a disconnect between the number of males and females in the field of engineering. It doesn’t start in the workforce but begins in grade school. Many women do go into engineering but eventually get out as seen in the quote above. 

Advocacy

Change is a long process and has already began, but is not producing the expected outcome. 

“In addition, the percentage of women faculty members at the assistant, associate and full professor levels remain disappointingly low even after years of improved recruitment of women into biomedical engineering at the undergraduate level.” (Chesler 2010)

Diversity needs to be increased in the field, many people believe that the curriculum is the problem. The curriculum has to be changed for there to be more diversity in the field. For this to happen more women have to be in higher positions. Women in high positions are not very common since they do not stay in the field for long. 

“Underrepresented minority (URM) women faculty are almost nonexistent in science and engineering departments at research universities. In the “top 50” computer science departments, there are no Black, Hispanic, or Native American tenured or tenure track women faculty.” (Nelson)

Reflecting on our research skills

Now that we are through with the literature review, its time to share our thoughts and experiences from this assignment.

What: I have learned so much about the things in my field of engineering that I was not aware that were happening. So far I have learned about the current status of diversity and the causes that make the status of racial diversity highly active. I know that my field has more meaning than the common ingenuity and innovation that it provides, I am now aware about the diverse aspects that make minority groups function the way they do in the engineering environment. I now received more experience in creating literature reviews other than the more simplistic analysis of a certain topic, I’ve learned to critically analyze a certain topic such as racial diversity in engineering by using specific methods of research introduced to us in the classroom. Conducting primary research is now second nature to me, I now feel more comfortable conducting a critical interview to gather information. I feel as if I have acquired effective and useful information by using the research methods introduced to us by this literature review, and I think that I can search beyond the academic level for important purposes.

So What: The things that I learned from this assignment are very important I order to function properly in this class because this course focuses specifically in diversity among various fields. It is important to evaluate and analyze the field pertaining to each student since this information taught to us will be valuable in the future. This information will be useful to us since we will have to conduct research similar, if not even more advance throughout our lifespan in college. We have to master the forms of rhetoric since there will be situations where this kind of research methods must be executed, even as citizens of a democratic nation we must be able to persuade in order to be heard or expand ideas, concepts, and even solutions towards issues. 

Now What: Now that I am developing my rhetorical, research, and communication skills in addition to exploring diversity in my respective fields, I can put this knowledge to good use by providing some analytical reviews that people can read into and understand certain aspects of a particular topic such as racial and gender diversity on a specific field. I can use my rhetoric to provide skillful knowledge and help create advocacy towards some representative groups in the academic community. With my knowledge I can seek to assist some organizations in the engineering community as well as expand my skills in research for issues in scientific procedures, concepts, and ides that can help other students with their research and projects.

#Week 11 Reflection

What: Doing this research report was a little difficult but nothing that I haven’t done before. I’ve learned a lot by conducting this research and received valuable and different positions to my research questions.I conducted research this summer so I had an idea of what exactly I was doing. I’ve written abstracts and method sections for posters, so when writing mine I already had a guide as to what it had to look like. Even with my research experience, I had never conducted primary research in the form of an interview so that was something new.

So what: What I learned in this course will greatly benefit as my work in research will continue throughout my college experience and maybe even after. I learned how to properly conduct interviews and how to gather my data. This will help me when I start my research in engineering in the coming semesters. This opened my eyes into a different type of research, since the research that I am most familiar with happen in a lab, with lab coats, and proper safety equipment. By conducting this research, I found a topic that I could potentially continue with in my research career.

Now what?: This research has opened my eyes to something that I knew was troubling but not to this extent. I could potentially continue my research within this topic since it does relate to engineering and science. Even though the numbers of women in engineering are increasing, the numbers are still low. There have been many attempts to encourage women to go into the field of engineering some have worked but once again not to the extent that they want it to. This is the next step, finding out what attracts people to engineering, specifically women.

Piecing together the Literature Review

This week’s post is to help everyone get a better understanding of how the literature review paper is supposed to look or be drafted. Our instructor separated us into groups and I was assigned Table 4/Group 4: Graphic image and conclusion. At first I was panicking at starting this post especially because I missed class Friday for a family emergency I feel like I am diving in blindly for this week’s assignment.

I begin by reading the tum Tuesday rubric for week 10, after reading the instructions I then began to summarize what key aspects are required for the graphic image and conclusion portion of the literature review.

The next step states for us to discuss where students can find detailed information regarding these two sections (graphic image and conclusion) of the literature review. One should refer to the rhetoric E Book, this is a screen shot of pg. 230.

The last part of this blog is to discuss several recommendations for how students can meet the requirements for the graphic image and conclusion section of the literature review paper. First i would recommend this you tube video that explains how to create your own graphs to show or compare data in your lit review paper. 

The next recommendation i can provide for the conclusion and graphic image portion is a video on how to create charts using word to compare data found related to your topic. By using charts and graphs, one can not only provide proof for the statements written throughout the literature review, but can help show the credibility of the information you choose to use in this paper. 

Now that i have completed all 3 sections of this weeks tumblr Tuesday post i cant help but feel a bit more at ease about the literature review final paper. Not only does my post help clarify what is required in the graphic/ conclusion section but reading my classmates post regarding the other sections of the lit review, there is no doubt that i wont get a high A for the final draft of my lit review paper.

#Week 10: Cover page, Abstract, References

Most of us have all written in APA format but for a quick refresher on a couple of sections keep reading!

First, I went to Blackboard and opened the RWS Handbook.

I was able to find some information on writing an abstract in the handbook.

As we can see above, an abstract is not that long and should be written last. An abstract should also have its own page and keywords.

For the cover and reference page, I went to Purdue Owl to get information on both.

Above we can see the cover page example that I was able to find. WE need to make sure we have the proper running head on the top left, in the center we see that it has a title, name, date, and University.

For the references, I was not able to find an entire page example but I did find how to properly cite Scholarly Journal Articles. We can see that the first line starts on the left and every line after the first one must be indented. The citation has to have the author, title of article, and date.

My interview preparation

I think I am ready for this assignment, first I started by sending the email to Dr. Pechak… I chose her because my topic is more centered in women, and from the three of my option of interviewers there were two women but one did not have email. So I first will give a try to Dr. Pechak!

Then, I downloaded the Interview Release Form to my computer and then to my dropbox.

Hello! I enjoyed how you first explained why you choose the professor you selected to interview. I believe your questions are well structured and are good questions overall. Regarding your gif following proof of the dropbox upload, I feel it is appropriate because making sure your information is backed up and easily accessible is always important. I had the same materials for my interview, those are key tools. Your interview checklist is nicely formatted, I can only imagine the effort it took. Lastly, I appreciate the Spongebob gif of him relaxing watching tv and eating some popcorn, but there is certainly more work to do.

#Week 9: Preparing for the Interview

Next I drafted my research questions so I would have them ready for my interview.

I began to search for a suitable interviewee that relates to my project and provides more insight to my research topic.

Dr. Olvera is an associate professor and director of research at the University of Texas at El Paso in the nursing department. I believe he will provide great insight on health disparities and the many causes due to a lack of diversity in the medical field. He can provide knowledgeable research on the consequences of diversity and the impact on patients and the medical environment.  

Dr. Schoen works at UTEP in the department of rehabilitation counseling. She specializes in issues of diversity and the factors that influence employment rates at hospitals. Dr. Schoen would be extremely informative towards my research topic and may provide details on my definition and consequences section.

Dr. O’Connor works at UTEP in the departments of health science and nursing. She has studied health disparities and could provide important information on diversity are its effects in the medical field.

Now it is time to sleep.

#Week7: Academic Stalking

My major is Electrical Engineering so here is the home page for ECE.

My college is the college of engineering and here is the home page.

At the bottom of the home page I found the contact information for the ECE department.

The ECE website didn’t have much on advising but I was able to find the undergraduate advisors.

The second part of this assignment was to find three scholars that would fit into our semester topic. After looking through several professors I selected three.

First I selected Dr.Homer Nazeran. He was my professor my first semester at UTEP and does research in electrical engineering. I selected him because he is a part of my scholarship that focuses on bring diversity in the biomedical research community. He will be able to help me better understand why it is important to have diversity in the field.

Next I selected Dr.Stella Quinones. She is also from the ECE department and does research there. I selected her because she can answer first hand what it is like to be a woman in engineering. She is a professor in the department and also an advisor to graduate students. 

Lastly I selected Dr.Virgillio Gonzalez. He is also a professor in the ECE department and does research there as well. His research is focused on the education aspect of engineering.

#Week 6: Questions

I started with some rough questions that I took to the UWC. Here are my first questions with the revisions from Corina.

 The trip to the UWC really helped me better understand the assignment. Corina really helped me better develop my questions. I was a little nervous since I had never been there but they are really nice and I will definitely go back!!

Here are my revised questions that Corina helped me develop!

I feel like the trip to the UWC really helped me develop my questions more. My ideas weren’t fully though out but with some help I was able to expand my questions to better fit my topic. My questions before going were a little broad and didn’t quite fit each question type, but after talking with Corina my questions started to look more like each example question that we were given. As the consultation went on, my questions started to make a little more sense with what I was originally trying to ask. Corina really helped me, and I feel like I can write research questions my own now.

Finding the perfect research questions

this week we have been assigned to use a strategic approach to research information for our topic by creating research questions

After visiting the University Writing Center I was given good advice and now I have the original questions formally outlined

My visit to the writing center was a useful method for approaching these research questions directly, I went in with just a notebook and my best effort to analyze the questions that I had in mind. With the help of Patricia, which was the consultant that helped me clarify on the research questions that I had provided; I started to make sense of this kind of approach with academic research. Patricia gave me some suggestions that I could use to have a better approach on understanding the assignment. I surely needed this help as I was clueless at the start, I had many questions about my topic in mind. After going to the writing center I organized my original research questions to the best of my abilities with the advice of my consultant. I think that I will be going back to the writing center in the future since I got effective and efficient assistance for approaching assignments.

#Week5: My Research Process

The process that everyone dreads when it comes to finding articles that apply to the topic of choice is known as the “Research Process”. As overwhelmed as I am trying to find “the perfect article”, I know I can do this!

STEP 1: As I begin reading the guidelines that I’m supposed to follow for this post, I realize that I might have forgotten a bit how to research an article, but i realized I can refresh my brain on exactly how to find this article, using this lovely website as a guide.

STEP 2: I found the “Academic Search Complete” tab (which happens to be the best database to use for finding articles), and I clearly remember how to search using certain words or phrases. Now to begin the research..

STEP 3: As I begin my research I type in “Diversity of hispanics in Nursing in U.S.” or “Diversity in Nursing workforce”. This Academic Search Complete gave me 61 articles, but I remembered on the guidelines I needed to find one article that was “Scholarly (Peer Reviewed)”. Now to continue the research..

STEP 4: (Spongebob Impersonation) 24 HOURS LATER… just kidding, after around 25 minutes of searching, reading the abstracts of the articles that seemed like possibilities and also making sure the article was published within the last 10 years and also making sure there was a PDF file to it..

I FINALLY FOUND AN ARTICLE! It fit everything that my semester topic discusses and hits every point to the “T”. I feel so relieved- it’s like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

One more thing, I am not done yet until I download my article and then save it unto my dropbox, so I am able to use it for the next class!

Hi! Really good post you have here. I like how you went step by step into the research process. I enjoyed how you included that library instructions in your post so really anyone could replicate your work. Everything was really organized and was super easy to follow and read through.
