Extra Credit

Yesterday November 30th of 2016, two of my friends and I went to participate in a Microsoft coding competition from 4:30 to 6:30 in the Computer Science Building. At first I didn’t think there was going to be a lot of competitors, but there were a lot! Most male with like 5 women including me and my friends. This was overwhelming! I felt the pressure and the stares when I first enter the room, and then I felt discouraged. I thought about leaving without even trying, but then I remember my research… Women in STEM fields and how they are underrepresented. Well, I was now living this for myself and finally could completely relate and understood what the problem is. However this is not what I’ll be talking about today…

What I was expecting from this competition is to learn more about what big companies like Microsoft and Google require you to do on daily basis and how can you solve those problems. And I know I was not even prepared for that and didn’t know many of the code required, but I think that for now, to be going to those competitions is a big step into my career as a computer scientist. We were presented with various problems that we needed to solve, by black box testing since we were given just the input and we had to come out with the code and the output. We didn’t win. However, it was a great experience since I was able to show interest and that I want to learn new things. Also that I can represent women and to be part of the solution of the problem that we are facing and inspire more girls to not be afraid of doing whatever they desire, even if people tell them not to.I hope to be back next year with more experience so we can finally win or at least score more!

LAST TUMBLR EVER Week 15

So this is the last Tumblr Tuesday post I will ever have to do and I couldn’t be happier. I am so ready for the vacation!

For our website we have to keep in mind, how will we employ ethos, pathos, and logos throughout and also when we design it. Here is a little reminder. Check It out!

Homepage/About me: I will employ Ethos as a writer in this respective section by, making sure that when I introduce myself everything is factual and up-to-date and that throughout my website my grammar and punctuation is correct. I will also ensure that I am credible for the information I will be providing about myself.

 Assignment Reflections: For this section I will employ ethos by, using my previous assignments as resources to ensure that the information I’m providing is factually correct.

Reading Reflections: For the last section I will employ ethos by, using the e-book as a credible source, to summarize the readings we have explored and discussed.

Homepage/About me: I will employ Pathos as a writer in this respective section by, using an appropriate photo of myself to show credibility and imply that this is my website. I will also make sure I use the appropriate colors, sizes, and styles of font on my homepage so that it is legible for my audience.

Assignment Reflections: For this section I will employ Pathos by, showing a sense of value on all the assignments I have accomplished that way my message has an emotional impact. I will also make sure that I use colors that are simple and not too much.

Reading Reflections: For the last section I will employ Pathos by, using emotional language to discuss how the readings met my expectations and how they were beneficial to the assignments we completed.

Homepage/About me: I will employ logos as a writer in this respective section by, providing a layout that is organized and not all over the place. Seeing those two websites helped me realize what a good website looks likes and how a bad one looks. Therefore, I will use Aarons website as an example.

Assignment Reflections: For this section I will employ logos by, providing evidence from my assignments to make my message clear. I will also make sure that this page is legible and organized for my audience.

Reading Reflections: For the last section I will employ logos by, using facts, statistics, and examples from the e-book to convey my message and show how the readings will be beneficial as I continue to develop as a writer.

Now that I am a designer, I will use ethos, pathos, and logos throughout my website.

Ethos: I will make sure that my grammar and punctuation is all correct and I will ensure that I use credible sources for all my pages in my website.

Pathos: I will ensure that the layout of my website is simple and not to colorful because as a Rhetoric writer that is not professional. I will also make sure that I use motivational appeals and emotional language for my audience.

Logos: In my website I will make sure that I use factual information, examples and quotes to convey my message. I will also make sure my website is organized and looks nice.

BOOM! I am finished with my LAST tumblr. I can finally be relieved from stress every Tuesday! Whooo Hooo!!

Ethos. Pathos, Logos FTW!

Week 15

Okay, so finally the time has come... The last Tumblr post of the semester!!!

Lets get into it...

SECTION A:

Ethos

As a writer I will make sure that ethos is present in my webpage, so that the audience can relate to myself as well as keep it simple and clear, not to overload the reflection with sentences as if it was another essay. However, I will go in detail in all of my reflections making sure that I follow all of the guidelines provided for this assignment. I will also try to develop my ideas clearly and with minimal if not any grammar errors.

Pathos

In this assignment I will make sure that the audience will know really get to know me by explaining who I am, my major, classification and little more about me. Also I want to make sure that everyone that will read the assignments know that I was the one that made them.

Logos

For the webpage I want to make sure that everything is well written and look professional. I will back up my information with the book to have everything in order and correct.

SECTION B:

Ethos

For the design of my webpage I will make sure to implement all of the information that is eligible and trustworthy, not only putting it in the webpage but also being able to prove that is from a reliable source and that will fit the overall design of the page.

Pathos

Pathos will be implanted in the design by using colors that reflect what is written inside it. However, this colors will be according to what is appropriate and professional. Also I will make sure that it has a balance and that everything is in a correct and proper order.

Logos

Logos will be implemented by the usage of a neat and simple layout that will be easy to understand, so the audience can move throughout without any difficulty. Also I will make sure that for each assignment the layout is not just plain and boring, but to make it according to what is presented.

On the Road to Creating a Website

So creating a website is the last and final assignment of the semester and I couldn’t be happier. After making my website I will finally be stress free!

In my website I must follow all the guidelines and must make sure I use the five principles of design such as:

Contrast: Design such as font style and size are different from one another.

Consistency: Making sure design is consistent and similar.

Balance: When images and text have equal weight, such as spreading out the content.

Grouping: Keeping sets of like items on the same page and not scattered.

Alignment: Lining up elements on the page either vertically of horizontally.  

- The first website http://trendlines.ca/

1) The balance of this website was not good at all. On the left side there was a graph showing the USA Gasoline components and on the right side there was only 3 bullet points of information, creating no balance at all.   

2)  The contrast of this site is not very good because there is so many different colors, sizes, and styles of font. It is difficult to read the graph since their is so many different colors going on.

3) The use of consistency is not good either because the design is not consistent. In the graph they used many different colors for the font and on the right hand side they used black making it very distracting.

4) The alignment is not in proper format because the textbox’s that are on the graph are not aligned properly. Some are diagonal, and they are all different sizes and colors. As for the grouping, the results of the chart is on the right hand side when it should probably be right under that way you know those are the results.

5) Based on my analysis of the site in terms of the principles of design, the effectiveness of the site was very helpful because there was so much color that it took away from the chart. Everything was scattered everywhere and had no consistency at all. Looking at this website now I know what NOT to do.

- The website http://www.aaronxmarquez.com/

1. The balance of this site was a lot better because the images and text had equal weight. The text was on the left side and the picture was on the right but it transparent that way you could focus on the text more than the image.

2) How is contrast employed on the site? The contrast of Aarons website was very organized. The style, size, and color of font was all the same. He also highlighted the key points in yellow to show you that, that information is important. He also put a black background so it wouldn’t take away from the text.

3) The sites use of consistency was on point because the design was consistent, he used only white and yellow for the font which is very simple and not to much for the audience.

4) Everything in this website was aligned and not scattered all over the place, which made it look organized.

5) Based on my analysis of the site in terms of the principles of design, the effectiveness of this site was very helpful because it showed me how my website should look. Aarons website was very organized, it didn’t have to much, it was just simple and straight to the point. I also liked this website because it looked fancy and it also incorporated movement when you would scroll to the next page. This gave me a better understanding on what my website should look like.

Now that I have a better understanding now its time to outline my own website and how I want mine to look!

1. To ensure that my website is balanced I will make sure that my images and text share equal weight for instance if I put an image I will imply that I put a fair amount of text, not too much and not too little.

2. On my website I will also ensure that I use contrast such as incorporating the same style, color, and size of font that way it can look organized and simple.

 3. I will employ consistency by making sure that my design is consistent and not a different layout on each page. For example, on Aarons website he had the same layout for all his different pages.

4. Using alignment and grouping can make my website more effective because that’s what makes it look organized. For instance, in the first website I saw everything was not aligned and the information was not grouped well o it made everything look like a mess aka “capirotada”.

 5. The colors I plan to use for my website is mostly black and white because I think that’s what makes it look organized. I feel like color takes away from the text  and objective.

 6. I can ensure that my website is going to be well- designed because I am going to go over the website guidelines and go in depth to make sure I understand the directions. I am also one who loves to ask questions therefore if I have any I will make sure I ask that way I am on the right track. In addition, the website creator WIX, gives you many options of designs that you can chose from so I think that will also be very helpful.   

Now that I have analyzed what a good website looks like I can now use that as an example to help me create my own!

Week 14: THINKING ABOUT MY WEBSITE

We had to evaluate two different sites to get an understanding of what and what not to do...

SECTION A

Here is the first website:

1.Identify and describe the balance of the site.

This website specifically does not have balance at all. To start with the colors are just off! And not to mention the graph and text font and size. I believe that since the designer just threw everything is the same place, and making one-part weight more than the other one ruining the balance for this site.

2. How is contrast employed on the site?

This site does have contrast however, the designer didn’t do a good job choosing the background color, since purple is not a good color for a page that is informing something. In this case says that it has different charts that goes from macro-economics to policies making the color too much for what it should portray.

3. Evaluate the site's use of consistency.

The site does not have any consistency since the site says that is going to talk about something but then the graph is about gasoline, then asks for donations to assist a research, and then a membership fee. It just not makes any sense…

4. Describe the site's utilization of alignment and grouping.

The site has a bad alignment and grouping strategy, since it has too much to see in a very limited space, all the information presented is just thrown. It has not order with some information in the header, other on the left side, right side, even in the bottom.

5. Based on your analysis of the site in terms of the principles of design, describe the effectiveness of the site

The site does not have effectiveness, in most of the previously stated elements this site didn’t do a great job making the audience this that this might have done for someone that is maybe in middle school, affecting logos and the credibility of all the information presented.

OK, one done! now for the other one..

1.Identify and describe the balance of the site.

This website has a good balance since everything seems to be in order as well as the text and the images being in the same concept. Everything have equal weight and everything is in order making it enjoyable to the eyes.

2. How is contrast employed on the site?

Contrast in this site was a lot better, because all the words contrast with the background highlighting the key words. This makes the cite seem more professional and serious.

3. Evaluate the site's use of consistency.

For the consistency of this site the designer had a good consistency. Everything is about the same and does not goes off topic, the site is about a graphic designer showing his work. Also with the theme, mostly the entire website has similar backgrounds and does not change suddenly to an eye-appealing color.

4. Describe the site's utilization of alignment and grouping.

Alignment was correctly utilized, everything was on the correct place and not all over the page. The text is on the left side while the images on the right or vice versa, making it well organized and easy to follow along. Everything had equal weight

5. Based on your analysis of the site in terms of the principles of design, describe the effectiveness of the site

This site is very effective, all the elements previously described work correctly and have an effective effect in the audience, it has good consistency, its appealing to the eye, it is not overloaded with information in the same page, etc. Also it has good credibility.

1.       What will you have to do to ensure that your website is balanced?

To make sure my website is balanced I will try to make everything in order not throwing to mush information is just that page using links that can take the audience to other slides where more information is presented. Also I will make sure that the text and images that I will use are going to be equally weight.

2.       How will you use contrast on your website?

For the contrast I will use colors that are not too eye-appealing since that will distract the attention as well as to affect my pathos and logos. I will use for my background something appealing for what I am trying to portray. Then for the text and images something that contrast with the background will be okay.

3.       Where will you employ consistency on your website?

I will employ the consistency on my website on the different links, pages and my documents.

4.       How can you use alignment and grouping to make your website more effective?

I can use alignment and grouping to make it easier to follow along and easier to understand. I believe that will make it more effective since it will make it more credible.

5.       What colors will you use for your website? Why?

For my website I will use black and white for the background, because I think that with those two colors you can do a lot. Then for the font I might use different colors like red or even yellow with as well black and white.

6.       How else can you ensure that your website is well-designed?

To ensure my website is well-designed I will make sure that the links in my website are pretty obvious so it will not be confusing .

#Extra Credit Opportunity

PhD Synopsis

This Friday November 18th of 2016, in the Computer Science building room 1.0202, at 1:30 to 2:30 two PhD students presented their synopsis on different topics. Each one of them being really interesting and different, yet little complicated. The first student to present was Adriana Camacho, with the topic of Conversational Gaze Aversion for Virtual Agents. This presentation specifically was really fascinating to me, since in the future I would like to work with something like this, which is artificial intelligence. However, the second presenter was Edgar Padilla with the topic of Augmenting Attack Graphs to Represent Data Link and Network Layer Vulnerabilities wasn’t as good as interesting as the other one. This topic I found it really complicated, and during the presentation I got lost sometimes since there were terms that I haven’t even seen yet, but what I learned was really interesting, network security. This is important since all of this is giving me ideas of what my major consists and I will learn in the future. With all this information gathered I now have more knowledge of what I can do with my CS major and what I will be required. I know that this will not be easy and it requires a lot of effort and time but eventually I will get there...

WRAPPING UP THE FILM: CREATING A PLAN OF ACTION

This weeks tumblr post is instructing us to create a final outline for how my group plans on conquering this documentary project. (our plan of action)

Wrapping up the film: Creating a plan of action

#WEEK13

Lets start this...

a.       What days and times will you commit to the project?

I will commit to the project on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Fridays from 12 pm to 3 pm. Also with my team, we decided to meet on Thursday and maybe on the weekend, to make sure we all understand what we have to do and to gather the information of each other.

b.      What days/times are you working as a group and when will you work alone?

So my team and I decided to meet on Thursday, so we can decide on what do we want to with the video, also to gather the information we all have, like the interviews, lit reviews, etc. I will be working alone on Tuesday and Friday from 12 to 3 pm to make sure to edit and to keep adding to the video.

 c.       Specifically, what aspect of the project will you address on each of those days?

Well on our first meeting we will share our information and talk about what we want to achieve for the video. On our free time I will look for some videos, images, quotes and will go through my information to get the best possible. I will address the inequalities that women are facing in the society now in days, like gender pay gap. As well as some consequences because that what my research was throughout the semester. We will eventually gather most of the information as we meet so we can check bullets from the checklist.

d.      Specifically, what will you do to complete those aspects of the project?

Read through the projects of my teammates to fully understand their point of view of the issue and how to tackle it. Also do more research on what to add to the video to successfully use ethos, pathos and logos to finally achieve the goal. For example here is a video that I will possibly use

e.      What specific aspects of the assignment are you most concerned about? What can you do to address those concerns?

I am most concerned about the solution we will have to implement, since none of us have actually talked about it just yet. Also I am concerned that we might not get into an agreement for it. However, I believe that all of us want this issue of women in STEM to change. So I am pretty sure that after all we will implement an excellent solution for this problem that might not tackle the whole issue but part of it.

f.       What specific aspects of the assignment are you most comfortable with? Why?

I am most comfortable with the issues that women are facing because that is most of my research and I truly believe women deserve the same as men. Since my peers and I have different research questions I am sure that all of them will cover most of the topic, and that also makes me comfortable. I am also very comfortable with all the statistics and interviews because as I said before all of them have different information that will be very useful for our project.

PURPOSE : To influence Hispanic middle school through college students to get involved in the STM education.

AUDIENCE:  Middle School- college students (13-24)

SOLUTION: Provide scholarships and educational programs for kids to raise the representation for Hispanics in STEM.

                  -A Silent Crisis: The Underrepresentation of Latinos in STEM Careers

PATHOS:

Not only does the lack of Hispanics have a great effect on society in the economic and workforce aspect, but it creates the society’s attitude that Hispanics don’t even have the ability to succeed in such a way and reach high standards. 

This individual shares her experience being a Hispanic pursuing a STEM career. Her experiences are very unfortunate.

The following is a quote obtained from a scholarly source.

“my school guidance counselor didn’t think i had it in me because they didn’t see other Latinos excelling in … STEM.”

                            -Lack of Diversity in STEM is Dangerous for Our Students

LOGOS: 

This bar graph demonstrates the participation of Hispanics in STEM field in the work force. The population of Hispanics has been increasing in the United States about 25 percent the middle of this century. The importance of Hispanics participating in STEM field would improve the nation’s future.

SOLUTION:

Awareness is the first step in solving the conflict of underrepresentation of Hispanic in STEM. Another way would be giving Hispanic students the opportunity to pursue a career path in STEM through scholarships. This will increase the percentage of Hispanics in STEM due to having the financial support.

WOMEN IN ENGINEERING

Part 1

Topic: Women Diversity in STEM

Purpose: Influence women to join STEM and to change the perspective people have of this fields.

Audience: Women and men interested in joining STEM majors or that are currently enrolled on the program. Middle school - College students.

Solution: Equality is the key, present to kids toys that can be for anyone, do not discriminate.Presenting Scholarships and programs that will let little girls enter the STEM world. Make women aware that they are just as women and that they deserve the same as men.

Part 2 

Pathos:

“Engineering is perceived by many for an area for men and that is the problem, it’s a perception.” (Villanueva, 2016)

As stated in this quote by one of my interviewees, engineering being a men only field is just a perception and that is a problem. Without a change of perspective there will not be any more innovation, since people is forced to think according to the society and with the traditions we were raised. However, as this quote of Viktor Frankl says “When we are not longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves”( Frankl). So women should not be afraid of what engineering is, instead they must be motivated and for that we need to see all the inventions and achievements made through engineering...

Advocacy:

To create a change we need to make women aware that they are important for the community just as men, and that not only to grown women but also to little girls. Since kids girls are presented with delicate and “girly” things such as dolls and house related stuff. However, now in days society tell us that equality is the new thing so why not start with careers. As Dr. Villanueva said women doesn't fight for more they are always okay with what they receive, however, men always think they deserve more and that is why there is a lot of distinction. Women need to learn how to get what they deserve!

“Females don’t negotiate, we are not trained to ask for more, maybe we think we don’t deserve more, or maybe just don’t know how to negotiate, and men always believe they deserve more”(Villanueva, 2016)

Hi! Great job on your post. I think you should look into the “sensitivity” skill. I came across it when I was learning about cultural genograms and it made me realize that if every industry struggling with diversity and not hiring outside their comfort zones was to add a course or even workshop including a sensitivity skill then minorities wouldn’t struggle so much or feel out of place! I definitely think you can become a future scientist and innovator by continuing your research skills! I al think I will apply your idea on doing HW! again, great job!

Research Skills Reflection

#Week11

WHAT

What I have learnt throughout the semester and all the project that we have done is that at first I really did not know how hard minorities have it when it comes to fight for what they deserve. Like for example women in engineering are still fighting against the perception people has of the field itself. However, there are some good things as well, for example the number of women in engineering is increasing with each passing day. Developing this Literature Review was a challenge, but at the same time it was interesting and fun. I learnt to analyze different points of views and transform them to one of my own, to be able to correctly research but not research just anything I was doing actually something that will be with me the rest of my career…

SO WHAT

What I learnt from this course is important because this is something that all the people should know, how to create a Lit Review, Genre Analysis etc. This is important not only because it will help me throughout my life but also because it will help other students later on. You are able to work with different types of sources, take what you learn from the research and apply it to your life. As a future graduate, a lot more paper will be required and every time they will be harder and harder so this is a great place to start when it comes to learn how to research properly and to write Lit Reviews. Also the interview that I did with Dr. Villanueva was very helpful and influence my career, since she is already went through what I will be going through when I graduate, her experience and knowledge in the field really is important.

NOW WHAT

Now that I know more about my field of research, I now that I can surely making and impact in the engineering field just by deciding to follow this path. I know there are still problems regarding this community but eventually they will disappear and I wish to be part of that solution in the future. I know, however that for now the only way to help is to keep fighting and studying in order to get my degree and finally do the difference in a world full of conflicts and disagreements.

Graphic Image and Conclusion

#Week10

If you don’t understand how to start, develop or create a graphic image and a conclusion, then this post is just right for you! Since it will not just help me understand better but all my peers as well.

First, I went ahead and look into blackboard week 6 for the guidelines

Once I located then I click on the link and read the through them until I found what I was looking for... Graphic image requirements!

And then, in the RWS book page 230 I also found some guidelines that can be very helpful

Now that we all know what to include in our graphic image and conclusion I want to include some videos that will show us how to create a graph and how to succeed conclusion

#Week 9  Interviewing a Scholar?

I went ahead and emailed the scholar I will be interviewing hopefully this week! I didn’t feel as nervous since she is my Computer Science instructor. Here is email I sent her today at…

I then logged into BB account and clicked on the RWS course. In there I clicked, as always, in the “Weekly Content” folder.

After I went ahead and opened the two files I will need for this assignment, “Standard Email Interview Request” and the “Interview Release Form.” At this I point I truly appreciated how Audrey organized these forms and how easy it was to find them. 

I downloaded both files as shown below…

I then saved them into Drop Box so I can access these forms wherever I go! 

I then neatly rewrote the interview questions I will ask my scholar. I also highlighted the question part, just incase I need to do some changes to it. Highlighting them will make it easier to find it with the quote combined.

Week 9: Preparation for my interview

To start off my interview preparation I emailed my interview request to Dr. Villanueva who is my first choice scholar.

After that I downloaded the Release Form and the Interview Confirmation in my Dropbox folder. So I can access them whenever and wherever I go!

Next I went ahead and look for my questions and rewrite them, so they will be easy to understand and to follow along.

YESS finally!! After all this preparation I just need one more thing... The materials I will be using!

Now I’m done!
