What is it?

A prompt-based horror event for The Old Guard. All pairings, all ratings, all mediums, all subjects allowed. Complete work only.

In the spirit of horror media, spooky season, and touching the darkness, no subject is off limits.

Why?

Because I've seen just one too many horror/dark/kink events where powertripping mods ban the very content the event is for.

Because horror as a genre is a vehicle to explore the darker aspects of the human condition, and the Old Guard has thousands of years worth of human condition to contend with. What great horrors have our favorite immortals been through? What have they done? What can't they live with, despite living, and living, and living?

Because forever's a mighty long time.

How?

Within two days of signing up, you will receive five randomized prompts: one each from Setting, Time Period, and Monster, and two from Premise. Post completed pieces anytime before February 14, 2026.

Finally finished my longfic for the @thehorrorguard event! This is actually the longest piece I’ve ever written, and I’m quite proud of it. The prompts were super fun to work with, and I hope it’s an enjoyable read :)

When Nicolaus divulged his desire to visit the ocean, Josef would embrace him and recount their shared memories with his poet’s tongue. No matter how landlocked they were, his vivid description of the waves would always bring joy to Nicolaus’s soul, and he could so clearly imagine the spray of water upon his face, the foam that washed ashore, the sky’s reflection rippling across the waves. Since Quynh had been lost, Nicolaus never dared to mention the sea around Andrea, nor would he ever request that they return to it. And thus, it became he and Josef’s little secret, a comfort that they shared with one another in moments of longing. Josef would liken his eyes to the shifting shades of the living water, and Nicolaus would find the steadiness of the tide in Josef’s peaceful breathing.

The water on his face had dried, only for tears to dampen his cheeks once more.

Nicolaus sniffled and sat up, trying to deepen his breaths that had felt far too shallow over the past day. The warm embrace of the water was now cooling, and it had done nothing to ease his ache. He could think of nothing but Josef, because Josef was his everything.

And everything had changed.

I am trying not to think too much about it yet because I am still trying to finish my stupid 5k meet-ugly ficlet (which somehow just cleared 30k what the fuck) but I am being consumed by ideas and have already started throwing down notes in a word doc for this oh my god y'all my card is so good!!

Here are some questions I've gotten privately, and I figured why not share in case anyone else has those questions?

Does there HAVE to be a horror element?

Short answer: horror is encouraged, not required

Long answer: This event was inspired by events like no-horror-allowed horror zine, kinktober hold the kink, no problematic content Interview with the Vampire zine, etc. Draconian rules that betray the very event they exist for, enforced with an iron fist, are not inspiring, they're stifling. These conditions placed on creators' creativity are the antithesis of art and storytelling, and I'm seeing them pop up all over the place. I am simply tired of it. So I created this event in my little corner of fandom so people could indulge their spooky season imaginations as much as they wanted. That's what the event is explicitly for. But you know what? I'm not gonna turn around and do the exact thing I'm railing against. I'm not gonna run an anything goes event and then tell you you can't write fluff or cozy autumn vibes or whatever you want. Giving your artistic impulses full rein is what this entire event is about.

Do I post on Valentine's Day or can I post beforehand?

The collection is open now! You can post whenever you're ready. The only stipulation is your work needs to be complete.

Can I post more than one?

Have at it! Anything goes! And if you want another prompt card after you've posted one piece inspired by the first, just ping me so I can send you a new one and make sure you don't have duplicates.
