Hurricane Joaquin has moved away from the Bahamas and in its wake, left disaster. The storm pounded the Central Bahamas for over 36 hours releasing its wrath mainly on our island, Long Island. This beautiful gem with a population of around 3,000 people is rich in culture and the birthplace to some of the country’s most successful doctors, politicians, engineers, educators and financial master minds. Joaquin was relentless with storm surge, strong winds and rain manhandling the island, leaving it and its residents beaten down, broken and scarred.Â
My mom is from Long Island and for a period in my life I’ve lived there as well. It’s a small community and i know just about everyone who lives there and I have quit a lot of family members living there, mostly in the southern part of the island. I haven’t heard anything about the southern part of the island besides it being completely underwater and some rumors about some of my family members that I don’t even want to think about. Long Island is a place where most of our people make a living off of farming and fishing and with all of those resources gone a lot of my classmates are probably going to have to drop out of college to help their families rebuild. Please help us out and make any donation that you can to the link above or below the money will be used to purchase clothing, medical supplies, water, flash lights, canned goods feed, building supplies for our Long Islanders.Â

I’m also from Long Island and the entirety of the maternal side of my family lives on that island. My parents and siblings live further south. I haven’t been able to hear from anybody since Friday. All I know is the settlement where we live is apparently impossible to get into due to flooding.Â
This is such a huge tragedy, we’re all donating and volunteering as much as we can and many of my friends and classmates are travelling to Long Island within the next few days to find their families and bring supplies. So far from what I’ve heard, complete houses have collapsed and belongings have been washed away by the water. On such flat land 12 feet of water is disastrous.
Please help us. I know that I’m not a popular blog but this is my home and I’ve never seen it in such a state. I’m a mess and the news I’m getting just gets worse and worse. We need all the support we can get.
