Through how many leather long coats does Negasonic burn through per year ? Girl must be stacked, cuz she’s wearing them everytime she has to go to a fight with another mutant, knowing her powers by themselves will burn the leather to the ground just for the aesthetic, what a true goth.
After seeing Deadpool 2 (twice and coming back with a deadpool head statue full of popcorn) I can say the movie was hilarious, i don’t even know how he got away with some of the shit he pulled (expect a lot of avengers bashing and more) you can definitely feel the big budget and mostly, you can see that Ryan heard the critics of the lack of diversity and worked on it. also definitely STAY for the midcredit scenes they work out every kink out of the movie i can’t believe most people bolted before even waiting less than two minutes.
I loved it, but despite all of it there are a few things that fell short and disappointed me and it’s mostly about Negasonic and the new mutant, the lovely yukio. A bit of it will also be about Domino and a certain plotpoint, I’m gonna put a read more and will vent about my issues with the movie while spoiling the less possible but you’re never too sure.
Ok, let’s start with my biggest Problem : Negasonic Teenage Warhead tho i’m not sure teenage still fit and the fact that the only time someone mentioned her name (Deadpool) he just called her negasonic. She and Yukio have the least screentime of the movie of the main cast. They’re always outsiders and much like in Deadpool 1 they’re pretty passive in...every situations.
Now despite that, Negasonic managed to show growth. She’s not a trainee anymore, she’s a full fledged X-men (X-Person ! would yell Wade) and she takes a lot of glee in reminding Wade he IS the trainee now. She’s colossus’s equal and is treated as such... except in screentime. But when their first mission with Deadpool go awry, instead of the usual apathy we could expect she shows worry and slight distress, When Colossus loses his calm on Wade she orders him to stop, and at the end of the movie ( a point i will bring back) she decides to bring back the mutants kids with Yukio to the mansion because “this is what an X-man does”. She does takes her responsibility seriously. In the post credit scene she’s also shown to be able to repair a time travelling device on her own or at least with Yukio’s assistance and shows marvel at it which was surprising. Goth Nerd confirmed. (She gets roasted a lot and is given a lot of nicknames and i can’t wait to see the english version of the movie to see if they remained the same)
Yukio is unfortunately even less developped than Negasonic. She doesn’t even have a hero name or a last name, she’s here to be cheerful and preppy, be Negasonic’s girlfriend and have a running gag with deadpool (it is funny but, wouldn’t have hurt to give her some substance. I know there were a LOT of mutants in this film to show but that’s the first asian lesbian superhero in the mcu dammit) If you have watched all the trailers you have seen almost half of Yukio’s screentime. We don’t even know what her power is, what you see in the trailer is the only fighting moment she gets, same for Negasonic (well maybe twice for negasonic, i’m going back on it last)
Now Domino is to Deadpool 2 what Negasonic was to Deadpool 1. She’s the MVP and deserves that hard earned place on the posters with cable and deadpool. I loved her to death but here’s the problem with movies like Deadpool everyone is so jaded and off-beat that any character development is mostly reserved to Wade when he stops being an jokster for two seconds. And Domino suffered from it, when she has to confront a childhood trauma or the death of a teammate she’s never shown anything more than midly inconvenienced, sometimes still cheerful. Same for Negasonic. When Wade suffered a big loss I expected her to trash talk him like she did but I also expected her to be uncomfortable because she didn’t know how to act and comfort him. She wasn’t and just vanished with Yukio after their one liner. Even Colossus and Blind Grandma went the tough love route, like we get it, all of you are fucked up. Everybody’s mentality of suck it up and make a joke hurts the movie sometimes and prevent us from growing attached to characters.
Now there are two things that bothered me in the plot and it ties in with a every else that bothered me : The kid, Russell.
The kid in the trailer with some kind of pyrokinetic powers, though his power is concentrated in his hands and he have to send blasts he’s still very powerful. Now why the fuck didn’t the movie used that occasion to let Negasonic fight him ? You could say, well, we don’t know if their powers would mesh well or do worst damages but biggest offence, the movie ACTUALLY show you that Negasonic IS the only one who can handle his power without breaking a sweat. The kid send blasts towards Deadpool, Cable, Colossus and they all go flying and burning but when he tries it on Negasonic, she is sent blasting off but her nuclear powers not only shielded her from the blast it seemed to redirect and absorb the energy sent her way and she’s left standing on her two legs completely unbothered.
Now that is an interesting development, because it showed that Negasonic have also gained a far better control of her powers. In the first movie she had to ball herself up, screwing her eyes shut, clenching fists and jaws to call up the nuclear energy inside her and she didn’t necessarily controlled it well enough as she destroyed the whole port-boat thingie in her fight against Angel Dust when using too much power. Now, she summons her nuclear shield without moving and in a blink of an eye and in the trailer where she does uses her power in her most conventional way she’s almost relaxed in her pose, her eyes open, face calm, only her fist are clenched. Training definitely paid off but I guess if Negasonic fought the Kid and stop the “threat”, there wouldn’t have been a movie. I’m just mourning the loss of a potentially great fight scene.
And since I’m mourning Negasonic’s screentime, I’m also mourning Yukio’s. Those two are always left out and arrive at the very last moment and sent off for the randomest reasons. Not at the end maybe, but Bringing new mutant children that have been abused at the institute, that sounds more like a task for Colossus, a senior agent, but no, Negasonic takes up the mantle and say that’s what x-men do (wade boop her and say x-person, letting her know in a way he considers Negasonic a part of the X-force, since his team is self-proclaimed “gender neutral”)
And that’s what i dislike about this scene, it’s that the exact moment the girls are gone Wade starts a speech about the people being here being his family and he is happy with that (keep in mind Colossus, Domino, Cable and the fire kid are there so it’s not a child issue and him and cable were trying to kill each others 30 minutes ago, won’t say anything about Domino they were a very charismatic duo and obviously like each other) So while I do hold out the hope that he considers Negasonic an X-Force member and knowing Ryan Reynolds doesn’t want to do Deadpool films as much as he wants X-force films, I’m gonna hope the two girls will be brought back for the next movie, making a team of 6 X-force doesn’t seem too much to me.
Now I know that sounded like a lot because I have expectations I KNOW Ryan can meet. (Once you see the movie you will understand what I mean, if he can shit on everything and everyone and his movie was still green lighted, he can keep the first gay superhero couple in his films) but the movie definitely deserved to be watched just if you go to see the lesbians or just for Negasonic or Yukio don’t. Otherwise I consider it just as good as the first one but with money. Maybe even better as it touches upon Wade’s mental health.
