What. What is the Christmas pickle debate?

The Christmas pickle is [beer garden proprietor during tourist season voice] An Old World German Tradition that no one in Germany has ever heard of, wherein you hang a glass pickle ornament on ye olde tannenbaum and the first child who finds it gets an extra present. When you buy your glass pickle ornament at Walmart it comes with a little card explaining the Legend of the Pickle, but the story appears nowhere in literature before 1880-ish, which happens to coincide with the approximate year when Woolworth’s began selling glass pickle ornaments at Christmastime. A possibly relevant historical note (though who am I to say?) is that Woolworth’s operated out of Pennsylvania, which had and still has the largest population of German-descended people of any U.S. state.

As far as a debate exists, it’s carried on every December between people saying “that’s fake” versus “well my mother-in-law is from Germany and she does this so Woolworth’s me that, atheists,” but I’ll leave it to you to #pickyourside.

Personally, I’m quite fond of the commercial opportunism hypothesis, and hang my pickle in pride of place every year in honor of my Flimflam-American ancestors.

Ok so here’s the thing about Newt Scamander…

I don’t think I’ve ever related to a character so much before him. Honestly though, you know how a lot of stories talk about that “awkward person” and how a lot of the time they are actually not awkward at all, they just trip a lot and wear glasses? Well Newt was awkward. And he was awkward in the same way I am. He’s not good with people. I’m terrible with people and it is only with very specific people that I can truely be myself around. I enjoy my own company as does newt, and I guess I don’t realise how much I need companionship until I meet beautiful people who like me for who I am (sad how rare that is right?) The character is so enduring, and it proves that you don’t have to be the most competent, stealthy, confident person in the world to make a difference. I like this a lot.

Also, as a side note, can we please talk about how all the characters in this film took gender stereotypes and threw them out the window!!

I mean, Newt the main male protagonist is not a natural fighter, he is nurturing and caring. He openly cries in the film, blatantly refers to his male friend as a “friend” and someone he “likes”. Also, refers to himself as mother to the creatures in the case. I mean, COME ON! How often do we get to see this on screen!

Then you got Tina and Queenie. Both brave, and caring, strong and fragile - and so far from one dimensional that I want to cry!

Then of course Jacob! The average joe of the film who is “actually” an average joe. Completely regular, friendly, and an all-round good person, who is not only there for laughs but also for his huge heart.

Anyway sorry for the long post, but this film is so beautiful that is hard for me to take in. Be ready for most posts :P

London holds massive vigil for the victims in Orlando

On Monday evening, thousands of Londoners came out in solidarity for an Orlando shooting vigil in the historically gay neighborhood of SoHo. Crowds gathered in and around gay bars on Old Compton Street, an LGBT thoroughfare. The video of London Gay Men’s Chorus singing “Bridge Over Troubled Water” is deeply moving.

BREAKING: Up to 20 dead, 42 injured in Orlando gay nightclub shooting, gunman dead

An Orlando police chief has confirmed that a mass shooting at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, left at least 20 dead and 42 wounded, according to the Associated Press. This is a developing story.

Update: The nightclub shooter, who “took hostages”, reportedly died in a “gunbattle with SWAT officers.” According to the AP, an FBI spokesman says the Pulse “mass shooting is being investigated as an act of terrorism.” Pulse responded in the moment last night with a heartbreaking and terrifying Facebook post.

Update: “I was thinking, are you kidding me? So I just dropped down. I just said please, please, please, I want to make it out,” said Christopher Hansen, a Pulse patron who told the AP he was in the nightclub’s VIP lounge when the shooting started, “And when I did, I saw people shot. I saw blood. You hope and pray you don’t get shot.”

Pulse describes itself as “Orlando’s hottest gay bar” on its website. The shooting took place during “Upscale Latin Saturday”, which Pulse celebrates weekly on Saturday nights. According to The Daily Beast, club owner Barbara Poma’s decision to open Pulse was spurred by a family tragedy. This is a developing story.

Update: Law enforcement sources told CBS News they have identified the suspect as Omar Mateen, a U.S. citizen from Port St. Lucie, Florida, who was born to Afghan parents in 1986.

The L.A. Times’ Matt Pearce confirmed authorities had given the name to the paper’s D.C. bureau as well.

Orange County Sheriff’s Office spokesman also told CBS how they are classifying this incident.

As an update: Florida Blood Bank Welcome Gay Donors After Terrorist Attack

Following an attack on on a gay nightclub in Orlando that killed 50 people and wounded scores of others last night, blood bank OneBlood announced that it is “in crisis need for all donors, and will be accepting all donors” — crucially, including gay men. That’s a big deal, since the official recommendation of the federal Food and Drug Administration is to turn away gay men from blood donations if they’ve had sex in the past year. 

The 12-month limit on donations from gay men is an international standard, but it will still prevent lots of men from donating blood. However, the FDA’s policy is guidance that local and private bodies aren’t required to follow. And one blood donation center has decided to reject that guidance when it matters most.

This isn’t just another shooting. 

This is now officially, with over 50 casualties, the worst mass shooting in United States history. And the fact that it took place at a gay club was not merely coincidence. This was not just another act of senseless violence in America. This was a hate crime. 

A man walked into a safe space for the LGBT community with an assault rifle and lined them up and slaughtered them. 

Don’t do what the media is inevitably going to do. Don’t erase where this happened and who this happened to.

When you make your statements for/against gun control, remember this was a hate crime. When you make your statements about the gunman’s reported religious beliefs, remember this was a hate crime. When your politicians make empty promises about changing the way things are, remember this was a hate crime. When you make your statements about the media’s coverage of this, remind everyone this was hate crime. 

Do not gloss over the identities of the victims. They were killed for them. This was a hate crime.
