1. Why you chose this artist
a. I chose this artist because he is a talented photographer, both technically and conceptually. His work speaks to me. His work focusses on what makes us human. Each piece tells a different story as it attempts to bring to light a differnet facet of humanity, including our personalities, emotions, and ideas.
2. - Very short (3-4 sentences) biography of the artist
a. Toledano
b. Known as Mr. Toledano
c. British American Photographer
d. Born in London to a French mother and American Father - Choose a few artworks/projects to show us and talk about them.
e. Work has appeared in Vanity Fair, The New York Times magazine, The New Yorker, Esquire, GQ, Wallpaper, The London Times
3. Work
a. Days with my father
i. Photographs over a period of 3 years
ii. Documents the final chapter of his fathers life after his mother passed away
iii. Displays his fathers personality while recording his struggle with dementia
b. The Many Sade Fates
After his fathers death
Series of photographs that explores the different directions in which his life could go.
He wanted to explore the possibilities of life and wondered where he could be in 10+ years.
4. A New Kind of Beauty
i. Explores the lives of people who have radically transformed their bodies through extensive plastic surgery
A statement on the direction of the human species as a whole and the changing views of what is considered attractive
5. - What inspires the artist to make work like this?
6. The artist is inspired by whatever strikes him. Philip Toledanos work is socio-political, covereing a wide range of controversial topics, he explores many ideas to their depth, achieving a level focus in his photographs that most artists struggle to achieve.
7. - Was there anything surprising you found in our research? Any sort of creative process that is new and interesting to you?
a. I found his use of not only lighting but installation impressive. The sets he uses on for many conceptual shoots borderline reality.
b. He pushes the boundaries of his concepts with all of his work. Each project takes a number of years. He is a perfectionist and declares the project done when he believe it is. He has explored every possibility.
c. His conceptual process is intriguing. He explores ideas most people would not consider, ideas that deal with life in the present and future.
