I just stumbled on an article that basically summarizes a recent metaanalysis of studies, showing that feelings of shame (religousness) are much bigger predictors of an unhealthy relationship with porn than literally anything else, including how much porn you consume.

And if you do have some sort of problem with overusing porn, it's not anyhow more mythical than a problem with... video games or watching netflix or something. I know it’s easy to think you can’t do anything to help what’s happening in the US right now, but you’re wrong. If you’re in this late stage capitalist fascist country right now and know what’s happening is wrong and are already taking action, there are people all around you that aren’t there yet and they need to hear you.

I’m not talking about screaming at people at the top of your lungs about how they have let us down or that they aren’t picking it up fast enough. I’m talking about little things. When someone in your life tells you that they don’t know what to do about what’s happening here, intimate conversations about what YOU are already personally doing or striving for can help them find there way.

I am a fitness instructor and often my private clients are pretty comfortable “liberals” that are so close to the radicalization that this country needs to turn the tide. So I talk about what steps I’m taking if they are curious. I make suggestions about first steps and organizations to step toward. I talk about how important community and care for your neighbors is. Etc etc etc.

My client this morning sounded so defeated when we started her session but by the time she was ready to leave we stood in my front yard garden as I gave her vegetables that my community helped me grow and talked about divestment, boycotts, orgs to work with and little steps she can take everyday to make this country better.

If you’re reading this right now and don’t know where to start I’d like to make some suggestions:

Do something you know is illegal, every day. Little things that build a rebellious spirit. Don’t harm your neighbors, but break stupid laws now so you can get your nervous system conditioned for the laws inevitably coming down the line from our government that only suit those in power. To be a good person we will all have to break laws in the coming years.

Find your local socialist rifle association and join them. Learn how to shoot guns safely. It may serve you in the future.

Grow some food. Get into your connection with the earth wether it’s one plant in a pot in your window from seeds you get from your local seed library or turning your yard into an urban farm. Taking steps to get away from our dependence on this incredibly fallible food system is gonna take work and experience.

Learn conflict resolution techniques and realize that we don’t have to like the people we are in community with if we are all stepping toward similar goals. We don’t have to like someone personally to care about and for them.

Buy second hand. Get back on Craigslist and sell things you don’t need for fair prices or trade within your community.

There’s a lot more you can be doing and these are just small examples, be creative. What are you good at?

No one is coming to save us.

We have to be our own heros and that doesn’t have to mean big scary things. It might one day, but right now it just means critically thinking and stepping towards a future that is better for ALL of us.

Okay so you're like the 4th person I respect to rate Nier Automata so so highly. I kind of dismissed it because the characters look like they're from a fan-servicey anime and I guess I assumed that was the main draw? I'm not saying that is bad by itself but doesn't usually inspire confidence in story and gameplay either. What makes it awesome?

In response to your comment about how the characters look, I'd ask the same thing of people who enjoy my writing and work beyond the adult or even the overtly lewd, why are you listening to what a pornstar has to say? We have a tendency to take sexuality and eroticism at face value, rarely leaving space for interesting nuances, textures and multifaceted aspects within in it. And sure I think someone can be hot AND smart, but sometimes I feel the former informs the latter. Many submissives and Doms I've met, the emotional complexity stemming from their erotic paracosm of fantasies informs their awareness of the world, creating a unique and very intelligent perspective.

Now I'm not saying that Yoko Taro had that thought in any way when creating Nier: Automata, the guy just likes girls in heels. But I recently watched this essay about the design in Nier: Automata and there's a quote in there by the person who created the design for 2B about making her doll like to lean into the negative space and subtractive nature of the world design. I think there's also something sweet about her being quite tender in the face of imminent existential doom, I feel like that a lot.

I regularly return to this quote from Audrey Wollen when asked this about Nier: Automata

"In anime, there are a lot of characters who are half robot, half girl, who are totally infantile and eroticised and still totally deadly. What can we learn from her and her use of object-ness?"

Thanks for the response, I can't believe I didn't notice it until now. I'm terrible at seeing notifications. I feel rightly called out with regards to judging media based on superficial first impressions. I agree that anyone's sexuality and eroticism ABSOLUTELY inform their work in other areas and I'm usually better about not dismissing things based on that. Hell, H.R. Giger and Brom are some of my favorite artists of all time and theirs kinks and sexuality are practically dripping from their work. I adored the movie Sucker Punch even though a lot of my friends laughed and dismissed it. I think, with games, I might still fall into that trap just because the space can be flooded with a lot of lazy attempts to get sales from the sexy part without any other depth or value. That, plus the fact that trying a game is a much larger time commitment than other media. Whether you loved it or hated it, Sucker Punch was less than two hours long, and in a lot of games two hours is barely getting past the introduction and tutorial area. I guess Nier: Automata got thrown out with the bathwater. Thanks for including the link to that video essay, it was a thoughtful one, as well as being a really good look at the game. I found the article that the Audrey Wollen quote came from too and look forward to reading it. I need to hit Post soon though and get on with my morning tasks before I get pulled into a rabbit hole. That really is a whole genre of it's own though. I'd still love to hear what you DO love about the game though. I'd watch that TED talk or sign up for Professor Willow's modern media class. I absolutely will sit up and listen to a porn star's opinions when they have good takes, and yours are the best.
