The End
The Koop Project has come to an end and Surrenden Sculpture Garden has been permanently closed. Thank you to all the artists who participated over the last 10 months and to everyone who came, braved the weather, helped us eat sausages and made the whole thing worthwhile. The 8th Koop Project offers a presentation of new site-specific work by Brighton based artist, Adam Laurence Hedley. Furthering an ongoing enquiry into landscape and walking, Hedley has used found detritus, materials and objects and a coming together of happenings to examine contemporary painting and sculpture in an outdoor environment. Taking influence from modernist furniture and architecture, Schwitters and Le Corbusier, #8 ALH presents an alternative to the traditional modes of display where, for one night only, these conventions are challenged and subverted. #8. New moon
On the 4th July 2016 the sun rises in Brighton at 4:54am. The moon is totally in shadow (the opposite of a full moon) so cannot be seen (although it is still there of course). 11:03am marks the 'New Moon'; an important moment in many religions, ideas and ideologies as a time for new beginnings. This time is also the first moment that sunlight hits the ground of the Koop, and it is here that the work exists.
The work is a replica of innovation - the matter a forgery. It represents the various historical engagements and human fascinations with man-made technology (geometry) as a physical language to confront natural bodies. I.E. the pyramid in relation to the sun. This dialogue between the two forms normally shows the man-made structure (pyramid) in awe and as a route to the all powerful natural object (the sun). In this case, the relationship is somewhat inverted, the natural object of a flower provides the delicate support for the man-made foam. Apparently balanced - the flower is barely aware of the foam's weight upon it. Nevertheless, the mass of the structure does weigh down and the foam does not float above a flower as the sun above a tomb.

At least three times are needed in order to begin to understand the infinite immensity of the moment....I am beginning to measure its importance...the orange is a beginning. Starting out from the voyage all voyages are possible. All voices that go her way are good. (Cixous, 1994) For the 6th Koop Project, artist Athene Greig presents a collection of new site-specific work, taking courage from Helene Cixousâ âVivre LâOrangeâ (To Live the Orange). Intended to provoke questions through fragmented and re-assembled imagery, her work combines a sense of playfulness with the poetic. Athene Greig is a London based painter currently on the Turps Banana studio programme. Athene Greig is 1/4 of DUPE; a London based collective, printed zine and blog. #6. #3. Marion Sagon
For Koop Project #3, Sagon presents her first solo project, Walking In The Abstract Painting. This installation includes a 3D animation (Generic Islands), 3 sculptures (model 1, model 2, model 3), one wall painting and a digital drawing.
Walking In The Abstract Painting was born following a trip to Marseille, marked by Le Corbusierâs Architecture. After visiting the coastal Frioul Islands, Sagon was influenced by the minimal natural environment and rare and enigmatic architecture, which gave her the impression of walking through an abstract painting. For Koop Project #3, Sagon shares how she sees our environment; an assembly of elements - natural or built - that all together shape an endlessly colourful and geometric scene. Sagon is particularly inspired by London where a continuous evolving architecture creates, she says, a giant and puzzled palimpsest; she questions the effects of fast growing new zones in the city and landscape on both an aesthetic and ethic level.
The animation titled Generic Islands, Island 2 - in reference to the Generic City of Rem Khoolas - is a reflection on contemporary urbanism, that she views as sanitized, historically empty and strangely Edenic. At the same time, these Utopian microcosms are inspired by the touristic cities around the Mediterranean littoral, where Sagon grew up. These inhabitable islands, where the concept of door and window have long -time been forgotten, can be visited by the viewer . Isolated in the koop, Shape 6 from LâEsthetique de la couleur des murs - series of residential houses transformed into digital logo - appears as symbol of our own home and in contrast, the wall painting White Structure - at the same time an abstract grid and a building under construction - carries the idea of fast changes within modern cities . Model 1, 2 and 3 are natural elements schematized in 3D that are thus becoming designed objects. These artefacts seem to have been brought back from the virtual world and link together Sagonâs virtual landscapes and our physical world.
Sagon defines herself as a digital painter and sculptor. Inspired by her everyday build environments, she creates artworks that mix and then blur the distinction between real and virtual and imitate digital. Her work questions the digital era and then further the notion of Simulation. She also engages with the notion of Landscape by creating personal and Utopian scenery. Halfway between geometric abstraction and figurative representation, Sagonâs practise is playing with our visual habits through a peculiar and distorted sense of scale and a colourful pallet. For the last two years, Sagon has also been experimenting with themes of fake via digital photography.
