Korra was not the only one with strange abilities, but in a way, that seemed to only make her life more difficult. She came from a long line of mages. Her father was like her, as was her uncle and cousins. If she went further up the family tree, she’d probably find more. They couldn’t control all the elements, though, just water. Maybe that’s why, when she was younger, she knew she was destined for greatness. When she was playing in the snow with her dad one day, he showed her his water abilities. She was maybe three years old and, the ever-optimist, wanted to try. When she matched her father’s motions, she created fire. He was taken off guard. She tried again. A rock flew. It was from that moment that she learned that she could control not just one but all four elements.

Well, almost all four elements. She can control water, earth, and fire with ease but air? Air is where it becomes difficult. She knows somewhere, down deep inside her, that if she tried she could, yet she has never been able to control it. Maybe that’s why she moved to Porthaven, the promise of understanding herself. Yet, when she arrived, she realized that she was going to have to learn more than just controlling air if she wanted to truly help people. Korra would have to learn to manage her emotions. She would have to mature.

Korra is hot-headed, stubborn, headstrong, and arrogant. However, she is also willing to do anything to help others. Her pride will never stop her from helping those in need. Her father’s brother thinks she has to spiritually-train if she ever wants to grow more. She has to unite her mind, her body, and her spirit with the forces at play that serve this world. (Unalaq, she realized at a young age, was extremely in touch with theology and his beliefs.) However, Korra is not sure if she could honestly even do that.

Korra was frustrated. The last forty-eight hours had not been good for her. Having just moved to Porthaven, she had spent the last forty-eight hours traveling, moving her stuff into her apartment, and trying to get adjusted. Yet, Korra couldn’t get adjusted. Maybe she was just being headstrong, but the pressures of everything felt heavy on her head. She had left her family, her community behind to come here, all to find someone who could help her hone her powers of controlling air. (Maybe, Porthaven’s reputation of accepting all people - mystique, supernatural, or just plain old mundane - had also influenced her choice - not that she would ever admit to it, though.) 

Now, however, it was morning and Korra was tired and Korra was frustrated. She had spent her last twenty-bucks on dog food for Naga, her best friend and white labrador, and now she seriously needed cash. She needed to start getting her life in order: she needed a job, a mentor, and most importantly, a bite to eat. The coffee shop that caught her eye only took cash, so here Korra was, fighting with an ATM. (She would love to say that her hatred of technology was rooted in  something deep, as if perhaps her magical abilities made her turn away from tech - but no. She just was bad at all things technical and truly struggled with the patience to learn.)

No matter how many times she inserted her PIN number, the machine would reject her card. She hit her fist on the screen. “Stupid fucking thing!” She shouted. She hadn’t even realized the people around her staring. She let out a huge sigh and kicked the machine, hard. Yes, patience was something Korra seriously lacked.

Blossom waited patiently in the ATM line, more focused on her phone than anyone around her. Scrolling mindlessly through Instagram, she wasn’t in any particular hurry. Her sister had recommended a new cafe for her to try, her classes for the day were over, and she figured she could use the afternoon to finally check out the cafe for lunch. The only problem was that the place only took cash, and the person currently occupying the ATM was taking an abnormally long time to make her withdrawal. 

Blossom knew how finicky these machines could be — she’d even had a similar situation just a few months ago when she’d first moved — so she was sympathetic to the other woman’s situation. What she wasn’t sympathetic to, however, was the temper tantrum that erupted. The initial bang of a fist crashing into the machine caused her to jump, and she nearly dropped her phone in the process. Once she realized what was going on, Blossom had to suppress an eye roll at the unnecessarily violent display. When has punching your problems ever been the solution? “Hey, just so you know, this ATM swallows your card if you insert the wrong PIN more than five times. Maybe call your bank instead?”

“Thanks, but,” Korra snapped back, then turned. 

Suddenly, she realized that the numbers she had been entering were not her pin, in fact, but the code that her apartment complex gave her to access the building. She put her hand up to her forehead. Her brain was so fried from the last couple of days that she couldn’t even remember her PIN number. She sighed. 

She turned back to the girl, “You wouldn’t happen to know any place nearby that sells food for cheap and lets you pay with card, would you?”

Korra hated to admit this but she was desperate. And making an enemy out of every current citizen who resided in this town didn’t seem like the best start to her new life. She ran her fingers through her hair, pushing it out of her face, and fantasized about the protein bar at the bottom of her suitcase in her apartment.

Korra turned around and gave the fakest smile she could muster. She was about to thank the stranger when she heard the advice, but upon hearing “dear,” her anger immediately worsened. 

“I’m not your, dear,” she said, with pursed lips. 

Unwilling to have the small crowd forming have the benefit of seeing her fail once more and partially aware that if she kept trying, she would truly blow up, she pulled the card out. 

“There, whatever, use it,” she said, storming off.

“Sorry force of habit, I was raised with manners” He said before holding his hands up in defense, it wasn’t like he meant to upset her. Diaval was just trying to be helpful, even if it was for his own slight personal gain. “ Hey wait!” He called after her as she stormed off, he didn’t like the thought of someone not having money… even if he did steal from people. Plus she seemed like she needed it, sighing he caught up to her and reminded himself to work out more often. “ Hey listen, I’m sorry okay? But if you need some cash or something, I’m willing to help you don’t even have to pay me back.”

She sighed, brushing hair out of her face. So adjusted to the culture of her extended family - her father’s side of the family had some deep rooted ideas in sexism and spirituality - she was always quick to defend herself to people doubting her ability, especially when she perceived the insult to be gendered.

“I’m sorry, I guess,” she struggled with the words. “Just culture shock. I don’t know. Where I’m from, Dear’s usually followed by a string of sexist remarks.” She sighed. “I shouldn’t have blown up like that.” As much as she wanted to reject the cash, she felt her stomach growling as she spoke. “Listen, what if I did you a favor and you paid me back with some food? You wouldn’t happen to have a couch that needs lifting would you?” She put her hands on her hips. I am pretty strong after all, she wanted to say, but, thankfully, stopped herself.

Not that Diaval had really needed to go to the bank this morning, but he wanted to put some cash he had made while pawning some things a couple towns over away, i mean he could have just kept it in his wallet but he didn’t like flaunting his money like that. Plus Mal had always taught him to keep things on the down low, the less people suspected the less likely they were to bother them or get curious when things happened in town. So he finished getting ready and then grabbed his jacket ready for the day to start, little did he know just how much fun he would have with it. 

Hoping on the bike he owned he headed towards the bank in town, glad the roads were oddly empty at the moment it meant less hassle for him and also he could live a little dangerously. Of course if he got injured Mal would just fix , for a price of course so he slowed down a bit as he got closer to town. Sighing as he pulled into the parking lot of the bank, he noticed a large crowd standing around the ATM. Taking off his helmet , he raised a eyebrow wondering if someone had robbed the bank or something but only noticed a rather angry girl who seemed to be kicking the ATM. Shaking his head he set down his helmet, and went over before coughing rather loudly. “ Maybe you have your card in backwards , otherwise this thing tends to act up. Just go inside if it doesn’t work this time , dear.”

Cerise let out an impatient sigh as she checked the time on her phone again. She wasn’t sure what the hold up was, it was just an ATM after all, not rocket science, but she really needed the woman ahead of her to wrap things up before her pizza was ready. The new place she’d been going to may only be as good as Pizza Planet, but it was a lot closer to home, and she didn’t need to deal with the crowds with all their scents and sounds. Unfortunately, they didn’t do delivery, and they were cash only. How anyone had survived to this day and age with both arms tied behind their back like that was beyond her.

“Hey, not to be rude, but could you maybe hurry up?”

Korra’s head whipped around. “Oh,” she exclaimed loudly and sarcastically. “I’m so sorry! Was my frustration and annoyance with this-” she punched the machine with her fist for emphasis “-thing bothering you?” She leaned forward in her face. “I’m so very sorry.”

Then, maybe just because Korra was overtired and malnourished, Korra slashed her arm and set a fire to the machine. It left a huge mark down the entire front, as if it was struck by lightning, and Korra was immediately regretful. She stared at the machine, as if, by some stroke of luck, her focus would undo her actions.

She really hated to admit it, but if Naga was there, sniffing her leg by her side, then this would not have happened. She would have had something to keep her grounded. Instead, she was right here, flying off the rails.

She turned around and, with her best customer service voice said, “Would you excuse me?” Then she ran off.

She hadn’t meant to eavesdrop, really. Her mother had told her at a young age that it was rude and inconsiderate, and after maybe a dozen times being told that it finally sank it. That being said, the other woman really was being loud, and she didn’t really think it was her fault that she happened to overhear her struggles. After all, Anna herself had been teased often enough for her serious lack of volume control, and people always heard what she was saying, even the things she’d rather they miss.

And sure, she probably shouldn’t be getting involved. She didn’t work for the bank nor did she need to use the ATM herself, and she definitely didn’t know the woman, but Anna was also an Àrnadalr. The family that created Àrnadalr Industries, a tech company. There had to be some kind of technological know-how floating around in the ol’ noggin. With how much her looks took after mom, she had to have gotten something from dad.

“Hey, hey, easy… Violence and technology? Not the best mix,” She may not have been a genius, but she’d broken enough appliances back to at least know that, “You have to be nice to it.”

The girl’s voice shocked Korra. Her head shot back to its source - a girl much younger than her. Her face flushed. “Oh, excuse me,” she quickly calmed down, realizing how much she had lost her temper. “I just- well, it wasn’t working...” She lost her train of thought, not sure how to undo her own actions - a trait that proved to get the better of her more times than not.

“You wouldn’t happen to,” she gestured to the machine. A more normal person might have worried that this was the perfect opportunity to get your credit card stolen, but then again, Korra had never been a normal person. Besides, she had  at least a few inches on the girl, and nothing about her seemed overtly threatening. Besides, she could use the help.
