The Underrated Books Project
There are some books that just don’t receive the credit they deserve; the kind that barely anyone talks about and you just wish that more people would read them. I’m sure you all know the kind I’m talking about - there must be a few on your shelf.
I’ve decided to run a project dedicated to underrated books, series and authors in an attempt to spread the word.
Essentially the plan is create a huge collection of posts on books that are classed as ‘underrated’. Not only are you getting some awesome book recommendations, but you are getting their book out there.
> Here are the current posts
> Masterpost: Books by genre
If you’re interested in helping me out, read on.
What inspired the project:
I love popular series such as The Hunger Games and Harry Potter as much as anyone, but I’m also a huge fan of less known authors. It’s frustrating at times to know there are such wonderful books out there that people don’t know about.
I’m not expecting this to turn all of these books into bestsellers because realistically, that’s not going to happen. I doubt anyone will even show interest in this but it’s worth a shot. It would be great to get more people reading a range of books with a quieter hype surrounding them. Some of my favourite books are the less known ones.
What is classed as ‘underrated’:
An underrated book isn’t likely to have the advantages of a hugely popular movie franchise or a huge line in a bookstore. These are the books that have a small following generally because they receive less marketing, aren’t necessarily printed worldwide or are not sold in mainstream bookstores.
If you love a book that only a small proportion of people have heard of - let alone read - it’s underrated. This also includes books that aren’t as popular as they were initially at its date of publication or less popular works by a popular author. It could also mean a book within a popular genre that’s overshadowed by other works, or books that are only read by a small audience.
What exactly I’m going to be posting about:
Each book/author that is suggested will have its own post. These will include its cover art, details and a link to its Goodreads page (so you can add it to your to-read shelf with ease). These posts are intended for reference. Feel free to reblog them and add whatever you wish, whether it’s a review or just a brief note on why you think people should read it.
I will also do ‘master posts’ that include a selection of underrated books within one long post, which might be a more preferable option for reblogging.
I’ll continue to do the posts so long as people show interest in the project so you can send suggestions whenever you like.
If you would like to recommend any books, series or authors that aren’t as popular as you feel they should be, send your suggestions to my ask box. All you need to do is list the book/series and its author. I will then do the post.
If possible, reblog the posts - especially if you’re a fan of the particular book yourself or wish to read it. The goal here is to encourage people to read these books so the more blogs that reblog, the better.
Spread the word to the project by providing links to the posts on your Tumblr, Goodreads, Blogger, etc. I’ll be posting everything project-related under the ‘underrated books’ tag.
Create posts on your own blogs related to a particular book that has a small following, whether it’s a review, edit/graphic, fan video, etc.
Let me know if you’ve read any of the books that have been posted about. It would be great to hear if this actually achieved something!
How you’ll be rewarded:
You’ll get a ton of awesome book recommendations that you might not have read originally!
I will promote your blog by adding a link to your Tumblr on the post concerning the book/author(s) you suggest
Throughout the duration of the project I’ll be offering chances for you guys to get books through giveaways. Some will be exclusive to those who have helped out with the project.
I’ll bake you virtual cookies
I’d really appreciate the help. It would be great to get more people reading books that aren’t necessarily popular.
