present :
JUNE 2026 — dewey is attempting to find some kind of job, so he can be independent from both his uncle scrooge and uncle donald.
JULY 2026 — dewey attends the summer solstice ball, for once not causing a problem, but getting sucked into the chaos.
about :
biography can be found here.
dewey is the middle triplet of the duck boys. he's always been the loudest of his brothers. they'd been told their mom was gone and that was the end of that, but dewey was the one that never accepted that answer. when they went to live with their uncle scrooge, it was jarring from the life they'd lived before. uncle scrooge had money and he took them on adventures and there was webby.
he took to adventuring like a fish to water. he loved it, he thrived in adventure and with webby's help, they secretly looked for the answers to what happened to his mother behind his sibling's backs—because he wasn't ready to tell them and he didn't want to fail. he searched the vaults, every inch of his uncle's manor for the secrets.
and eventually one day they found all the secrets, found that della duck hadn't died, but had left. that she and scrooge had gotten tired of adventures on earth and wanted to explore space, but della had stolen the rocket and gone off on her own. dewey wished he hadn't learned the truth, that it hadn't been uncovered at all because he couldn't put the truth back and now everyone knew. tension grew between them all.
that tension eventually got louie hurt and instead of staying with their uncle scrooge in his large manor, they left. uncle donald secured them a new place to stay. dewey needed time to stop being upset about the truth and he needed to let his brothers heal as well.
future :
well first of all, he needs a real job. walking around causing trouble isn't a real job. he also wants to explore the city and find a job that matches who he is as a person. dewey needs time to heal as well, though he won't give that to himself.
taken connections :
huey duck — older brother (by like only a few minutes)

“ i don’t think tonight’s gonna throw a million other problems your way. ” she offers him a reassuring smile, waving a hand dismissively. “ if anythin’ goes wrong, it’ll probably just be somebody spillin’ champagne on the dance floor. nothin’ to fret over. ”
mouth falls agape, unsure of how to respond to rebellious robots, before promptly shutting it with a slow nod. “ that’s… somethin’, all right! must’ve been a handful to deal with. ” not anything lottie has remotely any experience with; at most, she’s had to call tech support about her wifi router running slow, or how she had short-circuited the generator at home—which, admittedly, had been partly her fault, seeing she ran every salon appliance in the house at once. “ i’m just glad you made it out okay… only story i’ve got that’s even close to that is my best friend turnin’ into a frog for a little while.” an absurd comparison, considering it hadn't even happened to lottie herself, but she offers it without a hint of embarrassment.
“ oh, siblings! were they right there with you through all that? ”
"you never know, you gotta be prepared if it does. jeez i sound like my brother," dewey made a face. he was never prepared for anything. he was typically that one that was waiting for things to fail so he could jump in and fix things. honestly, maybe his family was rubbing off on him to some degree. "spilling champagne seems like it could be dangerous if it's on someone. could lead to a fight or something." dewey wasn't sure that was a bad thing though when it would lead to some entertainment aside from the acrobats, who he was avoiding looking at for too long because it was bringing back memories he didn't wanna think about.
"nah. you get used to it. i swear the dangers that my uncle put us in probably should have been a child endangerment case. except we were adults." dewey didn't really like thinking about the past. he thought that reminding himself about the past only brought up the good memories and not the bad ones. everything was still raw. "that's something! wow. a frog. wow. i can imagine that was an adventure." he'd have loved an adventure like that. "if i'm being honest, exploring the mcduck manor and vaults was enough of an adventure. we almost never needed to leave to find something to do!" he hated that he missed it.
The journey home had taken longer than Hercules expected. A visit with his father usually did. There was always one more story to tell, one more piece of advice Zeus insisted on sharing, one more reminder that no matter how old Hercules became, he'd always have somewhere to return to.
He'd been smiling when he stepped through the portal. The smile disappeared almost immediately. The Summer Solstice Ball had become unrecognizable. Music had given way to screams. Lanterns lay shattered across the gardens, branches tore through marble pathways, and guests fled in every direction as enormous trees lashed out with impossible fury.
"What in the world..." There wasn't time to finish the thought. A heavy branch cracked overhead, falling toward a group of civilians who had nowhere to run. Hercules was already moving. The branch collided with his shoulder instead of the crowd, splintering across his back as he drove it aside with a grunt before turning to the stunned guests.
"Go!" His voice carried effortlessly over the chaos. "Head for the courtyard! Stay together!"
He waited only long enough to make sure they were moving before another crash echoed somewhere deeper in the gardens. Every instinct urged him toward it. He had no idea what was causing this. Didn't matter. If people were trapped, he was going to get them out.
Drawing a steady breath, Hercules scanned the battlefield for the next person who needed help, already breaking into a run before he'd fully decided where he was going.
"Hang on!" he called, his voice ringing through the gardens. "I'm coming!"
dewey felt like he was going to be sick—well maybe you shouldn't have eaten all that food, a voice that sounded suspiciously like huey's entered his mind. he brushed it away. when the ball erupted in completely chaos, he hadn't known what to do. he'd thankfully been far enough away from the tree when it started grabbing people, but now he was trapped, cornered by a suit of armor. dewey wasn't good enough on his own in a fight, he needed webby so he could be the distraction. he needed someone else there with him.
everyone seemed occupied, he kept dodging the suit and he knew he couldn't keep that up all night. at some point someone had to come help him or this had to stop. distracted by a scream off to his left, the sword came dangerously close to his arm, instead ripping through his shirt. another time he'd probably be worried about that, but he didn't care right this second. this was supposed to be a fun night where he didn't do anything stupid and got to have a bit of fun. yet now he was dodging a suit of armor's attacks like his life depended on it.
shit, was he going to die before he could forgive scrooge? he could already hear everyone yelling at him for getting hurt. bracing himself against a random tree, he shoved the armor back and it fell to the floor. in the moment, he managed to grab it's sword. it had been a while since he'd used one of these and it's not like it was useful against metal.
"i don't. need help." he did need help. "i need. my uncle." and where was donald? he imagined dealing with this.
Nothing hit the spot quite like a large pizza from Pizza Planet. Garlic butter hand-tossed crust. Hot honey. Red pepper flakes. Every bite dunked in classic marinara.
He'd stuck to his meal prep, kept his portions on lock, and followed the workout regimen Dash had set up for him. But today was finally his cheat day. He had to indulge just a little.
And a supreme was his vice.
The smell of garlic butter and baking dough hung in the air, making the wait feel twice as long.
He shuffled forward with the line, head bobbing to Determinate by Lemonade Mouth playing through his headphones.
Someone stepped up beside him, saying something he couldn't quite make out. Judging by how quickly their lips were moving, they'd been talking for at least a few seconds before he noticed.
Max held up a finger in apology, paused his music, and slipped one earcup off.
dewey couldn't handle being bored. he tended to focus more when he could talk to someone that he was close to. lately, he'd been avoiding his brothers and even webby because he was still trying to give them space. the good thing about elias was that there was always someone new to talk to or someone old if he wanted to find a friend.
the middle duck didn't pay attention to the fact that max had headphones in, all he saw was another member of his family. dewey started speaking rapidly, not realizing that max couldn't hear him. he wasn't saying anything important, just saying hello and starting to chat about his own day. out of everyone he knew, max was one of the only people that knew just about everything that was going on with him.
"me? no, i was talking to hear myself talk." there was no sarcasm in his voice with the quote. "what are you doing?" dewey tilted his head to the side, a smile on his face. "i'm bored."
tommy leant up backwards against the bar, elbows propping him up, and looked on at all the ball there was a slightly smug expression as he lifted a champagne glass to his lips. “man, a guy could get used to a life like this, huh?” he wasn’t originally talking to anyone in particular, but he turned his head to the side to grin at the man beside him nonetheless, lifting his glass toward him.
“this your usual kinda thing or are you like me, one of the people they mistakenly took for belonging here?” tommy pauses for a moment, pulling a face. “that wasn’t supposed to come out that lame or self-deprecating, but you know what i mean, right? there’re people who fit into this kinda thing, which kinda looks like you do, and then there’s cool people who were a little late to the party. i blame my parents.”
dewey took a sip of the drink in his hand, looking around the ball. so far he'd been staying away from the dance floor, trying his best to act composed. he did wonder if scrooge was here somewhere because this did seem like an event he'd show up to. but dewey figured he was probably taking the opportunity to count all the gold in his vaults since that was clearly more important to him than his family. "i don't know about that." he didn't want to get used to something like this. it felt like it out him back into social circles he wasn't sure he wanted to be back in.
"i'm more of a dinner party kind of guy. or jet setting to the middle of the jungle looking for lost artifacts. ever play the uncharted games? that's how my life's been for the last... half my life. i'm retired now." he was too young to truly be retired. one day he'd have to find an actual job. "i look like i fit into this kind of crowd?" dewey laughed. he scanned the crowd but didn't see his brother. "out of my siblings, i'd say i'm the least comfortable at a party like this." he could fit in sure, but he didn't know what fork he should use for his salad from his dinner fork and he didn't like to talk business with those sorts of people. "i blame my uncle. great uncle."
It had been years since the frightened screams of Elias pierced his ears. Individuals who had no reason to fight but chose to because they loved this city so much, or they simply had no other option. They had been thrust into a magical war they didn't start. A war that never had anything to do with them but left so many to this day mending their wounds. The scene before him played out like a vivid dream. One Jasper tried so hard to forget.
This is what he had feared.
This is what the council had tried to prevent.
In the last year, they had failed the city, and now the cracks were beginning to show.
He looked down to see a familiar face. He had seen Donald's nephews in passing every now and then. Jasper owed Donald his life. The mage had gifted him a protection ring that warded off Orion until his dying breath. Wherever he was in the midst of all this, Jasper made a secret oath to keep his nephew safe. "I'm a bit too tall to be one of them." He replied, attempting some sort of humor but knowing it fell flat. "Yes, of course. Try to find an opening. When you do, get people out." He scanned the room around him and found a dinner plate. "Here, use this as protection. I'll get you as far as I can."
chaos felt like his middle name sometimes. dewey thought that he could handle anything. he used to think he could handle the truth, but when it came down to it, there were even some limits that he felt he needed to put on himself for his family's sake. this night's chaos unfolded and dewey didn't know what to do about it. he didn't have his partner in crime, he didn't know where his family was, he didn't know if he was the same dewey that went on adventures with his uncle. his adventures and chaos looked completely different these days. buying different fruits from the fruit stand, going to places he'd never been before, meeting new people. those were his adventures now.
who was behind this? and was his uncle safe?
dewey looked at the tall skeleton in front of him, unsure how he'd ever thought he was a suit of armor. "that's fair." dewey wondered how many people knew who he was. he thought he'd done a good job of being an anonymous person in town, but he guessed that there were people that would know him. "um, okay, but that doesn't help you." and that would help him find his family which is what he wanted. he took the plate and looked at it, not sure how he'd use that as a weapon, but he'd improvised enough that he could figure something out.
hands dart down to smooth her skirt, swishing the fabric around for careful inspection—once, twice, then a third time, even when he says nothing happened. you can never be too certain. the tiny crease between her brows disappears almost instantly, worry melting into relief, as she springs back to herself. “ whew! you sure had me worried for a second there. but it’s no worries! just mind where you’re steppin’ next time, alright? then we’ll be RIGHT AS RAIN. ”
i’m not used to these events. “ the way you’re movin’, i would’ve known. ” she teases, hands settling at her sides now. “ but you clean up nice, so you’d get the benefit of the doubt. ” her gaze drifts to his shirt and tie, lingering on the cheerful scatter of florals against the blue; she supposes that’s his equivalent to her pink ribbons and bows, and lottie can’t help but respect someone so committed to their own sense of style. “ you can never go wrong with a little pattern. ”
honestly, he was kind of a mess with events like this. dewey had been to dances before in his lifetime, but it didn't feel like this one. he thought maybe this would be something he could focus on not causing a scene for once, blend into the background, slow down a bit. so far that seemed to be the case, but the night wasn't over. he still had plenty of time to cause problems, even if he was doing his best to have a nice relaxing night. "that's easier said than done. i mean sometimes people tell me things and then it's in one ear and out the other cause there's a million other problems happening around me." he hadn't been overstimulated in a long time. ever since leaving the mcduck manor and taking some time away from that lifestyle, he wasn't used to the overstimulation of being around big crowds of people.
"i'm used to other types of chaos," he shrugged. "you don't know chaos until you've got to fight off a bunch of robots that have turned on their programming." or looked for answers to questions that he shouldn't have been looking for. "oh, thanks." he looked at her dress. "your outfit is very pink." dewey wasn't good at figuring out what to say in these situations. "it felt right for the theme." there wasn't much of a theme, people were in all sorts of different outfits. "and of course i wanted to stand out among my siblings." but they all stood out for their own reasons.
Donnie followed Dewey's finger across the ballroom before immediately laughing. "Donald?" He looked back toward Dewey with a grin. "I don't know, I feel like he'd somehow make ballroom dancing look like military strategy. Or he'd tripping over his own feet. Don't tell him I said that."
The thought alone was enough to amuse him. His attention drifted back toward the dance floor, watching another couple spin neatly across the room. "I can see Ella. Aurora too." He nodded thoughtfully. "They're annoyingly graceful. It's like they don't even have to think about where their feet are." Then he looked back at Dewey, one eyebrow lifting. "Hang on." The realization seemed to hit him all at once. "So Huey made you learn how to dance for a badge, which means you can dance. You just don't because your brother monopolized the lead."
A smile spread across his face. "You already know enough to survive a song, and nobody out there is judging...well except for me. They're all too busy trying not to step on each other's feet." The corner of his mouth twitched. "Besides, if it goes terribly, I'll be right here pretending to be an unbiased judge while eating enough dessert for three people. Moral support is one of my many talents."
dewey laughed at his own joke. honestly, he didn't think he'd ever really seen either of his uncles dance before. "i'm totally telling him you said that, but i don't think he's going to care." there were a million other things to worry about in the duck household that were more important than what people thought about donald's dancing skills. and while he tried not to be a problem, most of the time he felt like he was in the way of everyone's healing.
"they both just have that air, you know. of like people who have been dancing long enough that it's second nature to them or whatever." dewey couldn't say that he could dance all that well unless he was partnered with someone who knew his brain. "i have to constantly think about where my feet were. i mean i got really good at dodging dart traps and acrobatics when we were exploring, but that's entirely different than dancing." he was too spring loaded to sit still for too long. dancing might have been good for him. "well no, i only learned like half the steps." dewey shrugged. "and it wasn't like we really learned anything well."
dewey laughed. "i'm a lot of things, but i will not be dancing tonight. honestly, i'm only here because there's only so much sitting at home i can do before i get really bored." plus it was nice getting to see everyone wearing nice outfits. "i've had too much to eat tonight that the thought of spinning around on the dance floor seems like an awful idea. and i don't have a partner in crime."
Aurora nodded along as the other spoke. Her gaze lifted to the acrobats once more. Their talent was undeniable. She could never imagine herself pulling off such brilliant stunts. Only recently had she taken up the art of sword fighting. It was as far as her intense athletic training went. "You must let her know then so you can perform with them next time! I'm sure she would love to have you." The princess nodded. Her head tilted slightly at what came later. She continued to nod as Dewey spoke. "That's quite alright. You could always become one later if you wanted. The world is full of endless possibilities. That's alright as well! I was too until a few years ago. I decided I wanted to keep myself busy."
dewey believed he could do anything if he put his mind to it. if he failed he had his family here to help him whenever he needed assistance. still, he wanted to do things on his own and to be his own person outside of being one third of a trio or really one quarter if he counted webby—and he did. dewey laughed. "i don't know that i could do it." he shrugged. he had a fear of falling now, watching other people fall. even now he couldn't watch the acrobats for too long. "perhaps, although i think i'm more likely to become a spy than an acrobat and that's saying something because i'm the least quiet out of all of my siblings." he nodded. "what kind of job do you have now? i'm looking for a job that i don't have to use the family name to get. i want to get a job all on my own."

notes: this starter does contain elements of tw body horror. Please reply & read at your own discretion.
The expensive suit that covered his body ripped. The designer threads held on for dear life until the fabric fell to the floor, pooling at Jasper's feet. Flesh followed suit. His body, once covered in pale skin, was now shedding, revealing the ivory body beneath. Twisting and controlling as his body slotted together like puzzle pieces to create who he really was. The transformation looked painful, but for Jasper, this was natural. The last time his body had taken this form in public, it had lost all autonomy due to an amulet Orion had placed around him. Controlling his every action and whim. The thought of that happening again caused panic to surge up in the skeleton's chest. Bubbling until a roar left his throat. The panic released with it, but still settling in his open chest cavity.
Finger nails were now replaced with long claws, human teeth were now replaced with razor-sharp ones, and open eye sockets that glowed bright neon green. Already coming in at the staggering height of 6’5, five more inches were granted to the skeleton, now leaving him a towering 7ft. That is, if he wanted to stay that height. He could always get bigger. When the invisible puppet master's strings didn’t tug at Jasper’s joints, a sense of ease washed over him. His mind wasn’t entirely assured that chaos wouldn’t ensue from his end, but he had merely transformed. He took a moment to take in the sight of himself. Hands turning over and over to make sure this was real and not some twisted nightmare. With each blink, he wondered if he would turn back into a human, but all he saw after each second of darkness was the same bony digits. The world phased back, slamming into his senses. There was no warning, just the abrupt sound of screams. Jasper assumed they were coming due to him, but when he looked around, he saw the mess that was unfolding.
“Be careful,” He lamented as the body slammed into his leg. He looked down at the individual and held his hands up in surrender. “Don’t be frightened. I won’t hurt you.” He would never hurt anyone. “Are you alright?”
dewey was used to situations not turning out the way they were expected to turn out. he'd been in situations where on a dime, everyone had to stop what they were doing and fix a problem that sometimes yes, he had caused but it was a problem none the less. dewey remembered all the times that scrooge had to save his ass from some problem because none of them had been paying attention to where they were going. this was different. it was like everything happened all at once. people stared screaming and he watched as a couple of people trying to get away from the tree that was suddenly moving. dewey looked around frantic for a moment, hoping that his brothers had gotten out of here before it had gone down hill.
he scooped up someone that fell when the crowd decided to start running away from the tree as it stared grabbing people. and the suits of armor were attacking people. it was absolute chaos, carnage. it reminded him of all the times with his uncle, all the adventures he'd been on. but that was supposed to be a lifetime ago. dewey wasn't equipped to handle this alone. he was better as a pair, better with his brothers by his side, better if he and webby were partners in battle. he couldn't find any of them.
the lone duck looked around the room, trying and hoping that he might be able to spot someone he knew, someone helpful. if not, he needed to get out of here and head home. but he was worried that something worse would happen before, that all these people would be left here and get hurt. as much as this scared him and reminded him of the past that he was trying so hard to avoid, this kind of chaos was his comfort zone. dewey took a deep breath, finally making his way toward the nearest vantage point so he could help people, but as he ran he found himself running into something tall. he looked up: jasper.
"i thought you were one of the knights of armor," he dropped his hands, shoulders relaxing just enough that he wasn't so tense. "can i help?" nevermind that his motive for helping was to make sure that his uncle remained safe.
Leo did everything he could not to sigh from the depths of his soul. It wasn't the first time he had gotten into mayhem; it certainly wouldn't be the last. "How the hell did you eat three dozen?" He was more concerned with Dewey's digestive tract as opposed to magical consequences. "That's a big if, but from the looks of it, it might be." Perhaps it was his own imagination at play, but Leo could've sworn he saw the food sparkling.
These weren't his monkeys, and this wasn't his circus, but ever since he took on the role of leader, Leo had many monkeys to herd. "Yeah, there are a lot of comedians in this place. Instead of spiking the punch, we're enhancing the food. I'm not laughing, but we'll see what happens." Leo would've been mad as hell if something had happened to him tonight.
"what do you mean?" he asked, furrowing his brow. he'd been eating them since he walked into the event. "i've been here for like so long now." he shrugged as if that answered the question that leo asked. eating did make sure that he wasn't getting into too much trouble. "that's not that much in the grand scheme of things, especially since i've been, you know, dancing and stuff." and running around talking to people. that was enough to make him hungry. "welp. i guess i'm doomed. good thing i know lots of people that are helpful for this sort of thing."
dewey blinked at the statement. "are there?" he hadn't noticed. he'd been paying more attention to the council members walking around than people potentially enchanting food. "who would even want to do that? maybe you should observe me for a bit, see if anything strange happens." dewey stood perfectly still for about 20 seconds before he started fidgeting. "if anything happens to me, just go straight to my uncle."

a gown this heavy is not for the weak. but lottie, the dedicated woman she is, has spent years training for ballgowns twice this size. and when you dedicate yourself to something the way lottie has committed herself to always looking her best—the way she does in this dress & in all of her dresses—you learn to stride with ease and glide with a practiced grace, even weighed down by pounds of tulle.
that ability, of course, is interrupted when she feels a sharp tug backward as she tries to step forward, her head snapping around toward the source. “ ex-cuse me! ” she huffs, gathering handfuls of fabric at the hem of her gown, ready to lift it free. “ you’re on my dress. ”
if there was anything that dewey was, it was unaware of the setting he was in. other people were probably better at being aware of where their feet were. there were people that had been to balls before where they had to be aware of where their feet were. dewey wasn't used to being at places like this and he'd gotten himself into plenty of trouble being around this many people at once. dewey knew that there were people from all over elias here tonight. he had been scared that scrooge would show up, but then he saw his uncle was going to find some artifact... or something.
so he wasn't paying as much attention as he should. dewey immediately moved off the dress as he heard the voice. he looked down at the dress, sure that he hadn't torn it or something. "sorry!" he looked up. "it didn't tear and there's no dirt from my shoes or anything." he looked at lottie, embarrassed. "i'm not used to these events."
the lanterns glowed like captured stars and somewhere inside, people moved together as though they'd been born knowing every step. it was all so beautiful. King had lasted nearly twenty minutes before quietly slipping outside. The gardens were mercifully calmer. moonlight spilled across the stone paths while the warm hum of the celebration drifted through the open windows behind him. close enough to enjoy but without being swallowed by it. perched on the edge of a marble fountain, he balanced a small leather notebook against one knee. the tip of his pencil scratched thoughtfully across the page. observations: apparently, dancing becomes significantly less terrifying when everyone is wearing flowers. he paused before crossing it out. ...needs further study. another line. secondary observation: birds receive considerably more compliments than humans at formal gatherings. clover was comfortably nestled beside him, puffed up with unmistakable pride. “don't let it go to your head.” an indignant chirp. he smiled despite himself before turning another page, absentmindedly twirling the pencil between his fingers as he glanced back toward the glowing ballroom. “ suppose,” he murmured,
“if someone were to interrupt my incredibly important research.....i'd allow it."
the place looked as magical as it felt. dewey couldn't imagine how much work it took to put all of this together. it was beautiful and magical and his eye kept going to the tree in the middle of the dance floor. dewey didn't know what he was supposed to be doing tonight because he wasn't really accustomed to events like this. he wanted to network with people so he could finally get himself a job, but he wasn't sure if that was appropriate and he really did not want to cause any scenes. still, he could take the opportunity to just have fun tonight. somewhere in the room was the rest of his family, so he felt safe and comfortable. dewey didn't want to cause any trouble, but that was his middle name. well, really it was turbo, but whatever. tonight should be about fun. everyone had been so stressed lately, including himself. after hours of talking to people, even an extrovert like him needed a break. he decided to tuck himself into a relatively empty space, the gardens still had some people mingling around, but not as many as the people inside. dewey was kind of glad for a break.
"what research?" dewey asked, perking up as he walked closer to the other. "'cause i'm really good at research. i know all of the ways to find information." or well he asked his brother, but that was the same thing.
The dessert table had become Donnie's unofficial headquarters. Not because he had a particular sweet tooth. Okay... maybe a little because of the sweet tooth. A small plate balanced easily in one hand while the other reached for yet another chocolate-covered strawberry. He'd already decided that whoever catered the Summer Solstice Ball deserved some sort of award. Or at the very least, a raise. His attention drifted back toward the dance floor as another song began. A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth as he watched a man struggle to keep up with his partner.
He popped the strawberry into his mouth, chewing thoughtfully as another couple glided past. Donnie wasn't judging. Well...maybe a little. Ballroom dancing had always fascinated him. There was something satisfying about two people moving so seamlessly together that they hardly seemed to think about it. He'd spent enough time learning to dance with Jasper to recognize good technique when he saw it, though he'd happily keep that little fact to himself. People tended to assume the engineer couldn't dance. He never bothered correcting them. It was funnier that way.
His eyes wandered toward the entrance for what had to be the fifth time in as many minutes before returning to the dancers. Another couple spun across the floor. Donnie nodded approvingly before reaching for a miniature éclair. He thought to himself before finally noticing someone nearby. Without missing a beat, he offered the dessert tray in their direction. "Help me settle an argument with myself." His smile widened. "Who's the best dancer in the room so far? Because I'm keeping score, and I think I've found the current frontrunners."
dewey did know how to dance. there'd been a badge for junior woodchucks that huey made him learn the basics, but he also wasn't very good and of course huey had been the lead, so he only knew a little bit of how to lead a dance. it didn't really matter though because he didn't really have anyone to dance with. dewey had friends here tonight, but he hadn't come to dance. he'd come to mingle. he'd come to make sure nothing happened to his family. he wanted everyone to have a good time because it had been so long since they'd had some real fun. although he knew that everything was probably way more complicated than he wanted it to be, he was trying to enjoy the night and stay out of trouble.
the desserts table was absolutely stunning. whoever had come up with the decorations in general had good taste. dewey watched as everyone danced around with their partners, the smiles on everyone's faces. he wondered how many of them were dealing with problems like his own or had things worse they were dealing with. elias had so many people dealing with so many different problems. there had to be ways to solve them all at some point.
"easy," he said and then scanned the room for who he was looking for, finding him easily and he pointed. "donald. don't let him tell you otherwise." dewey was joking of course. he actually wasn't sure that he'd ever seen donald dance. "not me. huey was always the lead when he forced me to practice so he could earn his junior woodchuck badge." his tone wasn't bitter. "i'd probably say ella or aurora if i was being serious."
Donald had spent the better part of the evening making his way through the ballroom, exchanging greetings with familiar faces and doing his best to convince himself that the uneasy feeling following him since his return was nothing more than readjusting to being home. His eyes wandered over the crowd again, lingering on council members, old friends, and families enjoying the celebration before finally settling on a familiar sight.
Changing course without much thought, Donald crossed the ballroom until he was standing beside Dewey. He didn't announce himself right away. Instead, he rested one hand lightly against the younger man's shoulder, a simple gesture that had become second nature over the years. "You doing alright?"His gaze drifted briefly back toward the celebration before settling on Dewey again. "I've only been back a day, and everyone keeps telling me to relax." A quiet chuckle escaped him. "Figured checking on you was a better use of my time."
dewey had yet to decide if he liked dances. of course the decorations and people were all stunning and he liked getting the chance to relax. but it reminded him of a lot of things he was decidedly trying to ignore. this seemed like something he should like, lots of dancing, movement, chances to cause trouble. maybe if webby were here he'd have a better time laughing with his cousin. maybe if he still didn't feel guilty about everything else that happened, he'd have a nice night with his brothers. but everything felt so backwards. while he was determined not to cause trouble here tonight, especially since he'd seen uncle donald walking around and didn't want to make the night worse for his uncle. however, part of him wanted to have fun and go back to the person he was before everything went wrong.
"yeah, i'm doing fine." he glanced at his uncle. "well, do you need to relax?" he figured the answer was probably yes. "nothing is wrong and even if it was, you can handle it." dewey had lots of questions that he wanted to ask, but he'd been holding his tongue. some of them he didn't want to know the answer to because he didn't want to know the answer to it. he'd missed donald while he was away. he looked across the ballroom at all the people dancing with their friends or partners or whatever. "did mom like this kind of thing?"
Leo stood in front of the refreshments table, staring at the person in front of him as if they had grown a second head. "What do you mean this is faerie food?" He was just about to take a gigantic bite of the cupcake in his hand when the server made an offhand comment about the food. "Are we talking magically delicious or should I worry about turning into a giant?" Leo was growing sick of magical mishaps. After being explained, they were made by the fairy godmothers in Elias, and his nerves eased the slightest bit.
"Level with me here, on a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you trust the safety of this food?"
dewey felt like he had far too much energy for the people at the ball. he would have done better to be a performer. maybe he should look into that as a job. he had like 45% of the skills he needed to be an acrobat. although maybe it would give him flashbacks to watching louie fall. so maybe that wasn't a good idea for a job. he could probably dance for hours and not lose any of his energy. it was categorically a problem. "this is faerie food? i think i've eaten about three dozen mini quiches." dewey blinked at the one in his hand and put it back on the tray of a cater waiter that walked by. maybe that was a job he could do. he could listen to lots of drama at parties and all he had to do was serve food. scratch that, his uncle was usually at those types of parties.
"uh, if it's faerie food.... then probably a zero. that wasn't an option. okay, probably one." dewey looked at leo. "i would hope we're safe unless someone thought it would be funny."
The feeling of a ball was bittersweet for Aurora. The last time she was here, she was dancing in the arms of her beloved Philip. Now she remained on the dance floor, floating in space with no tether. She had gotten used to the feeling. The emptiness, the sadness. Moments like this opened old wounds, but tonight she would persevere as she always did. "I wonder where Minnie found all these acrobats. They're spectacular."
dewey found himself watching the dancers on the ballroom floor, not having a partner to dance with, not really knowing what to do with himself. there was so much to look at, so much to do, so much to eat that even he was overwhelmed. the most comforting part of tonight was knowing that if anything went wrong, uncle donald was somewhere in the crowd, probably not that difficult to find. not that dewey expected to cause problems, the probability of that was slim. he was trying to be a responsible citizen. "she should have hired me. i'm a trained professional and unemployed," he joked. "well, okay, i'm not trained, nor a professional, but i am unemployed."
