The lingering sluggishness of sleep fled her immediately. She’d seen her mother ready to move before she ever took that first step, and the initial few blows she threw, Cassandra weaved away from like water. Her defense had always been her strongest point. It had to be. There were nearly no situations in which she had the height or strength advantage - she could not go into fights that way. She had to maintain control, use her opponent’s momentum against them, but the tactic didn’t hold against her mother. Not for either of them.
Rather than speak again, she only moved. Using the side of the manor for leverage, Cassandra let her feet catch the rough bricks and launched off of them, arcing her body in a way that let her flip over Shiva and make a grab for her neck on the way.
Since Bruce had been killed, nothing in her world seemed to fit the right way anymore. It felt like she was walking through a dream, foggy, a shade of reality. This felt natural. She fell into it so easily that it was almost painful to be reminded of what it felt like not to hold back.

Cassandra may have been her daughter, but she reminded her of Carolyn in many ways. In fact, she was what Carolyn could’ve been if her sister had never held back. Her daughter was still too merciful, too weak in that respect but she flowed with her as only her blood could. They were like water and air, always connected in the most elegant of dances. She let her daughter take her neck, the force of her jump and Shiva’s own push moved her in a graceful flip and by the time she reached the ground her hands had moved to knock her daughters away so she could take the momentum and flip back again.
Like Cassandra, she felt no need to speak either, her body spoke for her as it always had. She could see the grief in her, the pain of loss. No one would ever think to call her maternal, but Shiva had her own way of showing affection, and this was it.
She charged in again but made no lethal strikes, her daughter needed to dance and this was how they did it, just as she and Carolyn had performed in their youth. The danger wasn’t present, just bodies in perfect harmony, strike, dodge, grab, spin. In these moments, everything made sense. Cassandra had to fight to win, just as Shiva was, but not fight for her life.
