Lonely- Surprisingly not found

Breaks- Couldn't find breaks, but will substitute with Break. This is from Chapter 1 of Legacy of the Fallen

A shiver ran down her spine, her muscles tightening automatically, the feeling of being watched overwhelming her senses. She glanced around, her body growing warmer under the mysterious scrutiny. A voice suddenly rose, above the rest inside her head. A clear voice amid the fray, directly into her head. Who are you?

Her breath stuttered, her pace freezing in place as her search for the gaze intensified. It had been the voice of a boy, his voice already dropped to a baritone, with an accent she couldn’t quite identify, yet seemed so familiar at the same time. She swept her gaze along the faces in the crowd, her skin itching as it finally landed on a dark-haired boy wearing all black leaning against the wall, strangely vivid golden eyes narrowed carefully at her. He almost looked like he was supposed to be in high school, his muscular build telling her immediately he was some kind of athlete. His skin was a warm amber tan, his wavy, dark brown hair looking like he had just rolled out of bed before being hit by a wind storm. His features were sharp, narrow almond-shaped eyes observant. He was quite a bit taller than she was, probably closer to five-foot, eight. His posture was casual, curious, yet there was something about him that resembled a predator on the hunt.

Even as a redheaded girl with thick glasses and a tall skinny boy joined him there, he didn’t break his gaze, watching her even while responding to something the redhead said. She couldn’t say how, or why, but she knew the question was his.

She stared back, eyes wide, unsure what was happening or what she was supposed to do next. She watched as he laughed, his eyes going to the redhead for only a split second before returning to her. His head tilted slightly at her, an amused tick pulling at the corner of his mouth.

Reply- Chapter 13 of Legacy of the Fallen

“Fine,” the blond drawled out. “We wouldn’t want to scare Ben away on his first mission, right?”

“He might already be running,” Eleanor couldn’t help herself, laughing as Ryan mimed being shot in the heart.

“My friends have turned against me,” Ryan pouted. “Elaine, you’re my only ally now-”

Elaine’s glare flew past Eleanor to land on the boy. “Shove it, dolt, I’d rather partner with a Vorakur.”

“Ouch,” Eleanor suppressed a giggle at his less-than-affected reply. “At least you’d match though, you’re about as prickly as one. Though you don’t look as intimidating, so you’re actually closer to a porcupine- or no, a hedgehog!”

“Let’s not call Elaine a hedgehog,” Cameron intervened, raising his voice to suppress the squawk of rage that escaped Elaine. “We know our plan. Tomorrow morning, probably Amber, or someone else, will drive Ryan and Ben to grab our last rescue. The whole mission should last less than three hours, but everyone else should be prepped and ready to go in case anything goes wrong.”

Town- Chapter 14 of Legacy of the Fallen

Ryan felt a curious grin ticking across his face, turning back to face forward. “Ready to get back into action?” He asked Amber, tilting his head with his eyes tracking the path of a raptor too far away to identify.

“Not much action here,” her dark eyes darted to him for a split second. “You know I didn’t expect my act of sticking it to Maishear to be driving into town to pick up a kid from school.”

“You never know,” He stretched his arms out before him, feeling his shoulder pop as he did so. “Last time we had a load of fun.” He swung his head to face her.

She pursed her lips with a hum, tapping her fingers lightly on the steering wheel. “It sure looked like you did.” She cleared her throat quietly. “At least I’m off house arrest for a couple of hours.”

Ryan rolled his eyes. “You have to put it that way, don’t you?”

“What other way is there?” she shrugged, face impassive. “He forbade me from leaving, shut me out of inter-observance intel, and won’t even let me watch that giant gate of his. You could call it something else, but it’s really a hard sell to make.”

Head- Chapter 8 of Legacy of the Fallen

Jacob dodged, rolling to the side in an equally smooth action. His face was blank in focus, his body moving seamlessly out of a crouch to lunge at his attacker, grabbing Asher’s upper body and flipping him over to slam the other boy into the ground with an arm pressed over his chest. “You don’t want to do this,” he warned through his gritted teeth.

“I think I do,” he spat out with a level of animosity Anna couldn’t understand. She could have blinked and missed how Asher kicked Jacob’s legs from under him, turning the tables and grabbing him by the throat with a snarl.

By now, the fight was turning the heads of nearby students, a teacher on the far side of the blacktop beginning to head over to the action. Though they were out of view from the cafeteria windows, some people had begun to leave the building to see what was happening outside. Jacob and Asher, too focused on each other, didn’t acknowledge the building attention.

Jacob lifted his head against the pressure, bashing his skull against Asher’s face; the latter reeling back with a hand against his now bleeding nose. He rubbed a hand against his neck, coughing once with a glare that could have drawn blood on its own. He pushed himself up to his feet, standing tall over Asher on the ground.

Jacob’s gold eyes were alight with a darkness and danger that made her want to turn and run. He looked almost feral while he pushed his hair away from his face, his breath coming heavier than usual. “Yield,” he growled.

“don’t reduce this female character down to a love interest” does not translate into “this female character shouldn’t have a love interest.”

preventing female characters with strong, compelling narratives from experiencing love, intimacy, and affection is just as regressive as reducing them down to sexual accessories for male characters. it assumes that women must choose between a romantic interest and depth of character and ignores a far more productive message: that women are capable of possessing both.
