“I’ll be Doom for Christmas” originally presented in What The–?1 (1988) #10, by Scott Lobdell, John Byrne, Daniel Vozzo and Jade Moede
@doctorxdoom
sometimes, i think the weight of my emotions is enough to crack my ribs, and make me cough blood. it hasn’t happened yet, but that doesn’t mean things won’t get worse.
thelostapprentice:
That was unexpected. Though the Cloak and the Eye were not entirely heavy on their own, together… With what they meant, it felt far heavier. Placing her hand over his, she gently gave it a squeeze. “Me? Sorcerer Supreme? That’s a scary thought.” She gave a playful grin before her features turned more serious. “You won’t die, Master… This world still needs you. I still need you.” Letting go of his hand, she straightened up. “Let’s look over the ritual. We should get started as soon as we can.”
Anthony laughed a little at her sudden take charge attitude. “A scary thought it may be, but you’d do well,” he told her fondly. “Besides, I’d rather have you as the Supreme than, say, Victor von Doom.” Taking the book from her, he flipped it over to the ritual he’d pinpointed as the best way to remove the curse. “Here, this one---” The ritual separated a persons body, soul, and magic into it’s separate components. The ritual was technically a dark one, meant to modify and/or enslave a person by tampering with their basic essence. “combined with this one.” A strong cleansing spell, to be performed directly on his magic. “We’d need to go somewhere else though, star alignment is pretty important for the ritual. Either at Giza in Egypt or Stonehenge in Britain.”
thelostapprentice:
Casey thought for a moment over the information he had given her, closing the book. “The rituals you found… While you’re weakened you can’t perform them safely, but I can.” She wouldn’t let him tell her no. He knew she was hard headed, and he should expect she would do anything in her power to help him. “I can do it, Anthony. Give me a chance.”
Rubbing at his face, Anthony thought. Letting her perform the ritual had its risks. She would have to literally hold his soul in her hands and pick apart the curse strangling it. Was she ready for that type of thing? Not only for the inherent difficulty, if he died in the process, would she be able to take on that burden of knowing she failed to save him? He was not afraid of dying, but he was afraid for her peace of mind. It would shatter her confidence.
Sighing, he told her. “Alright. I can’t be a hypocrite and tell you that you can’t do it when...” he trailed off and sighed again before he picked up the Eye and placed it on her collar. Unbidden, the Cloak floated to her and settled on her shoulders. “If this doesn’t work, if I die,” he cupped her face, “you will be the next Sorcerer Supreme, understand?” Technically, by giving her the Eye and the Cloak he already handed the mantle over.

She looked him over, noticing that the curse was centering around his chakra points. “Anthony…” Hearing the resignation in his voice, she became more determined. “No. No way. We’re going to find a way. Between the two of us, we’ll figure something out.” Taking the book that he had been reading, she started flipping through pages, trying to find what he had been reading. “What have you gone over so far? How long ago did the curse happen? Has it been a fast or slow progression?”
“Casey...” Anthony shook his head slightly. What had he been expecting? Of course she wouldn’t accept it. “Dispelling, cleansing. It’s pretty firmly rooted in, I’d probably kill myself anyway trying the rituals and spells I found to get rid of it. How long? Two weeks ago, it’s a slow one, but it’s been speeding up as my life force wanes.” The curse would have killed a weaker sorcerer in a day, but Anthony was no weak sorcerer. “I stopped a warlock from unleashing a demon on the city, but he sacrificed himself to curse me. You know what that means.” A curse powered by a willing sacrifice, it was no wonder why it was extremely hard to get rid of.
thelostapprentice:
“Well, too late for that.” Taking his chin, she tipped his head to the side, looking over the lines that the cloak had exposed. “Good work, Cloak… Anthony, jeez…” She tugged at his shirt and seeing that they were getting thicker. “Let me see the rest.” Casey released his chin. This was definitely not nothing.
Seeing the stubborn determination in her eyes, Anthony knew she wouldn’t let this go. Sighing, he unbuttoned his shirt and pulled it open. There in the middle of his chest was a pitch black circle the size of a quarter, the source of the radiating black lines. Just below it near his stomach was a slightly smaller black circle the lines were forming. Whatever the curse was, it was infecting his chakra points, choking them and feeding on his life force. “I don’t think there’s anything you can do, Casey,” he told her, resignation and acceptance clear on his face.
thelostapprentice:
Just as anticipated, the Eye let her know he was lying, causing her to frown. “Right, then why didn’t you tell me if it’s not such a big deal?” She set the eye down and folding her arms. “Let me see. Pull down your collar.” Casey demanded.
“It’s not... pretty,” he tried to deflect. “I didn’t want you to worry and stress yourself out.” Anthony tried to tug his collar closed, but his Cloak slithered off his shoulders, pulling at his shirt’s collar hard enough to pop off buttons and expose the sickly black lines. “Eu tu, old friend?” The lines were thicker under the cloth, close inspection would reveal they looked like symbols written over on top of each other and blurring together.
thelostapprentice:
“Do you blame me?” A playful smile tugged at her lips as she lifted the relic. “Eye of Agamotto… Show me that which is hidden.” Slowly, the eye opened. At first, she expected the would be something he had hidden in the room for her to find. However, as the eye swiveled around, taking in the room, it fell on Anthony before casting it’s light. Casey froze as the black veins running up his neck were illuminated. “Anthony- … You’ve been cursed.” The apprentice brought a hand up to his cheek, the worry apparent in her eyes.
A low breath was released when the Eye responded to Casey. Anthony knew the Eye could have refused her no matter how much she had studied. “It’s... not as bad as it looks.” Such a blatant lie, and he knew it, and the Eye would too and show that to Casey. “Don’t worry about it. I told you you could do it! Practice more with it, get to know it better.” He made a shooing motion out the door.

thelostapprentice:
“Thank you.” She said, the squeezing of her shoulder did bring some comfort. Taking the Eye delicately in her hands, she looked it over, taking in every detail. “You’re really letting me use it?” She sounded almost skeptical, like this might be some sort of test. This was a tool for the Sorcerer Supreme, not an apprentice.
“So suspicious!” Anthony chuckles, “Yes, I am. You can do it.” He sits back down at his desk, trying to conceal the fact that it pained him to move so much. He shifts the chair around and faces her. “Go on. Show me what you’ve learned.”
strangemagicaldoctors:
“Now it is. It isn’t a good influence if they tell you to do something whole you’re un-drunk.”
“...What?”
Have you ever killed anyone? Even by accident.
“Yes, what do you think I do? Go to fun parties and make sparkles? I deal with things that makes people’s skin crawl and their eyes bleed just from seeing it, sometimes... sometimes innocents get caught in the crossfire... It’s a war against the shadows that want to devour humanity and in war there--- there are casualties...”
