This was the winter I became a Certified Desert Creature. It has been in my blood all along, though. My dad used to take me out to BLM in Arizona as a kid. Just to be out there. Flip some rocks. Maybe see a rattlesnake. Sedona half-marathon. Signing up for this race last minute may have been an example of poor impulse control; but it was also circumstances meeting preparation. I set a hard goal in January to run 100 miles over the course of the month. I barely squeaked by (100.25/100 on the 31st) but that was enough to get me hooked on the activity. After seeing some road closure signs for the upcoming race while driving through Sedona, I went online and signed up immediately. Using the PCT as proof, I figured it was at least possible to get it done. Despite showing up to the starting line 2-minutes late, I finished in 2hr/1min. I am very satisfied with that. I ran consistently the whole time and that’s all I can ask for. This is the first step in my sick fantasy of running an ultra. New favorite cactus; new favorite national monument. The Organ Pipe Cactus is native to rocky parts of the Sonoran desert, and @organpipenps is a prime example of this biosphere. Joshua Tree during holiday break can be chaotic, but sneaking out for sunrise and sunset as many times in a row as possible was an exciting game. The world, especially the desert, is truly viewed through rose colored glasses in those hours. They make the rest of the day look both harsh and bland, and leave you longing for the passing of the day.
