My friend Violet and I were coming home from a club. She was driving. I knew she was drunk. I should never haven gotten in the car. I should have stopped her. But I was kind of drunk myself, and I didn’t always make the best decisions back then. We ran smack into a bollard. There was smoke, we were bloody, Violet was unconscious. I heard this voice telling me to keep calm, to get out of the car. I looked over, and it was Jo. She was standing there. I was crying, completely freaking out, but she talked me through it. We’ve been best friends since then.

By the following Thursday, my parents sent me back to school and they went to St. Moritz on a skiing trip to ‘get their minds off things.’ That was how my family dealt with the death of their daughter. They sent me off, and they skied. For three years I just tried to block everything else out. I studied. I did sports. I was the perfect student. I never let myself stop for one second to think about what had happened. Years of just blocking it out. Then, when I was in my last weeks of school and had been accepted to Cambridge, I realised it was the first time I really had nothing to do, nothing to work toward. And I started to think - all the time. I couldn't stop thinking about her. And I got angry. And I got sad. All the things I thought I’d kept out of my mind, they were all there, waiting for me.

I was captain of the rowing team, so I had access to the boathouse. One night in early June, I went in, got a rope, and threw it over one of the beams...

I took a big deep breath to prepare for my angel voice. Unfortunately, I did so while taking a bit of the hot pot. A chunk of beef slipped down my throat. I felt it stop somewhere just under my chin. I tried to clear my throat but nothing happened. I tried to cough. Nothing. I tried to speak. Nothing.

My throat was stopped. My eyes watered so much that everything went all runny. I felt a rush of adrenaline...then everything went white for a second, completely, totally, brilliantly white.

This was not like any other experience I ever had. This was not a moment in time. I’m not sure the diner was there anymore, but he was. He was warm. He was unsure at first, but he was kissing me back. His body eased, his shoulders slumped. His heart was going strong.
