Moon Joy June: Lunar Inspo

Moon Joy June artists!  This is the second week of Moon Joy June, and the prompt is “Moon.” If you’re an artist looking for some inspiration, we have a treat for you: four new and previously unseen images from our Artemis II mission!

All four of these images were captured on April 6, 2026, during flight day 6 of the mission, when the four astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft conducted the lunar flyby of their ten-day journey. During the lunar flyby, NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen captured photographs and collected scientific observations of the Moon in meticulous detail.

That's us, together.

While we're looking up at the Artemis II astronauts journeying to the Moon, they're looking back home at us. 

In this image, Earth peeks through the capsule window, reminding us that a view like this relies on the ingenuity and hard work of countless people back home.

In the second image, we see our home planet as a whole, lit up in spectacular blues and browns. A green aurora even lights up the atmosphere.

For a contest in my city about painting female scientists, i decided to choose Vera Robin as the combination of two of my favourie things in the worl: the astronomy and the art!

🌌About Vera Robin🌌:

Vera Robin was a famous astronomer of the US who made a lot of contributions to the study of the dark matter. Vera Robin anbd her colleague friend Kent Ford studied more than 60 galaxies and found that the stars at the outer edges were moving just as fast as those towards the center, they knew for sure that something strange was going on.

For this activity, we had to select a traditional tale and create an illustration based on it. I chose one of the stories I've been most fascinated by and one I've heard about since childhood: The Little Mermaid. To do this, I looked up various ideas, such as seas, oceans, tropical fish colors for the scales, and iridescent fish scales, even tutorials on coloring techniques.

My original idea was to design the little mermaid surrounded by coral on the seabed, showing her in her natural environment before the whole story began. I grew up watching several mermaid series, so I tried to incorporate references to those narratives: on the one hand, the red-haired little mermaid we all know, Halle Bailey's beautiful iridescent tail in the live-action adaptation, as well as the adornments worn by the "pichi pichi pitch" mermaids and H20's tails with the Fairy Oak faces style.

I hope you like this work as much i loved doing it. 🫧

Color of the characters! it was so fun to do it, i wanted the characters to look more like eastern asian/japanese since the country of reference was Japan, to do it i took several photos of actors/actress/singers to to try to recreate the features

A robot of an amphibian we did in class, i chose to make a whale killer and i put a small reference in one of the plates as a reference to a joke of a friend and mine👀

An illustration I did for class, my first attempt to paint with volume 👀 it was something new that I never experienced before, I have always wanted to paint in different styles or different colouring but I have never tried it until I had to do this job, it was so exciting and I am so happy with the result (⁠ ⁠ꈍ⁠ᴗ⁠ꈍ⁠)

1.- The sketch: I always loved fairy oak and since I was a child I always wanted to incorporate that kind of style into my drawings to honour the art that made me whom I am today and made me persuade an art career! 🙂‍↕️

2.- Plane colours: to visualize how I wanted my illustration to be!

3.- Color key 👀 to visualize how I wanted the illustration to be with lights, I'm still learning to do the lights and shadows

Some things could be different from that sketch to plane colours or final because I started with this and then I realised that I had skipped steps so I went back and fixed some things that didn't quite convince me 🫠

4.- an attempt with color gradients and textures

5.- in that moment I started doing the hair, the dress and the eyes...I wanted her eyes to look like a blood elf of World of Warcraft so I started erasing some lines for her eyes and doing her hair, hair by hair, I wanted her to have little ringlets so I imagined that the hair could be like a croissant, I have curly hair myself (but I'm brunette) so I did some photos of my hair to have of reference.

At first I deleted the hair that I was doing and I wanted to cry but lucky for me I had some strands in another file I had saved before 🥹

In the first image I tried the idea of the blood elf, I lowered the opacity of the layer but you can still see in the ear that it was going to be much longer

6.- and Final! 🫠🩵 It took me over two weeks to have it finally complete, it was the first moment I did that type of colouring and I'm impressed and proud of how cool the result was! At that moment I did the lights and shadows that I had left to finish and painted some flags in the background to make it look better, I was inspired by a WoW image of a red-haired girl with curly hair and of the curly hair of Brave and Moana
