My playlists but instead of their titles its the scenarios I imagined they could be used for when I made them:
It’s a Sunday morning and after a long night of good sleep you are lulled out of slumber by the sunlight that begins to peek in through the window. You get up and you put this playlist on while you make yourself breakfast while looking forward to a day full of doing nothing.
You’ve been driving in the dark for a few hours while on a road trip with two or three of your closest friends, they are all asleep in the car with you. Your car is the only one on the long stretch of road of with nothing but beautiful stretches of sparsely vegetated land on either side. You feel free and content as you look around at your friends and realize the sun is beginning to rise. You put this playlist on just low enough not to wake them.
It’s a bit past midnight and you’re sitting on your bed with your phone screen being the only source of light. While scrolling on Instagram, a picture of your crush comes on your feed. You feel your chest tighten and the butterflies fly in your stomach. You put this playlist on as you spend the rest of the night wishing you had someone who thinks of you as often as you think of them.
It’s officially two weeks before college graduation. You look around your room thinking about what you’re going to pack first as you hear your roommates joking about something in the kitchen. You think about how it feels like just yesterday you were leaving your high school for the last time, and how it didn’t feel nearly as heavy as this does. You put this playlist on appreciating the fun times you’ve had while trying to figure out how youth slipped away so fast.
You’ve been trying to finalize the soundtrack to the latest coming of age movie you’re working on. The only scene left to add music to is at the very end when our cohort of characters, who are forever changed by their journey, are driving off into the sunset in the comedic relief’s beat-up station wagon. You compile this playlist of options searching for a track that captures the humor and heart of the film while also signaling a triumphant end for the protagonists.
You’re both at the airport saying your goodbyes. You know you’ll see them again in two months but that seems like an eternity. You also know that they’ll be worth the wait. As you begin to drive home you see a plane fly up above and something tells you its the plane they are on. You imagine they are staring out the window, looking at you too. You return to this playlist over the next few weeks as you get used to going to bed alone, reminisce about the time you two had together, and count down the days till you are together again.
