The flu virus has a gel-like coating that keeps it protected in cold temperatures. The coating starts to melt around 72° F, so warmer weather means it’s more vulnerable in the open air. The closer it gets to freezing, the safer it is inside its ‘shell,’ which melts once it’s in your body. That’s why winter is ‘flu season.’
