“Oh really? I used to go there a lot when i was younger. I think there’s been a change of owners since then though?” He shook his head, smiling. “Nah, I’m on my break. I work in the flower shop down the street. Unless that was a polite way of giving me the hint to fuck off? In that case I have a very important errand to run.”

“I’ve lived the entirety of my life in Everwood and I’ve never actually gotten a chance to visit the flower shop,” he confessed with a small smile. “I’ll have to stop in some time now that I’ll know a friendly face.” By the sound of it, he’d managed to brush the other the wrong way. Theodore hadn’t meant to sound rude or short with him at all. “Oh no, not at all,” he said shaking his head. “I’m sorry if it sounded that way.”

“Five,” Taylor confirmed with a laugh. “It’s not like there’s five servings worth of alcohol in it, just five kinds. I think I’m biased ‘cause I’ve tasted it so much over this week, but it’s a little heavy on the fruit. But there’s like, strawberry and pineapple and orange flavors in it so maybe with the passionfruit frosted cookies. And the rainbow maracons, of course. Hey, I do have to get home and let Ziggy out, and I don’t want to make you late, but I’ll see you in a few hours, yeah?” he said, standing up and pulling out his phone to check the time. Plenty of time to practice before opening.

“Oh no, no,” Theodore laughed and shook his head. He knew it couldn’t have possibly been five servings.“I didn’t mean dangerous in that way, just that it’ll probably be very successful in getting plenty of folks smashed for Pride.” Being that he wasn’t much of a drinker himself the mixed cocktail would undoubtably be dangerous for him to consume. He could only imagine what might happen if he drank one himself. Suppressing another soft chuckle he looked at the watch around his wrist. “Oh right of course,” Theodore smiled graciously and nodded. “Don’t let me keep you either. Give some pets to Ziggy for me, I’ll see you later.”

“The current state of affairs being that our President isn’t exactly being a role model as he’s supposed to be.” Ingrid had always been one for being feisty and candid in her utterances, though she wasn’t certain if her opposite so desired to know her political opinions. It was better just to keep her mouth shut, lest she actually be faced with trouble. “What’s more fucked up is I don’t see an end to all this.” Then again, she wasn’t exactly the optimistic type, either. 

“Unfortunately.” Though Theodore was usually much more optimistic, when it came to the policies and politics of today, he wasn’t entirely sure what good could possibly come of any of it. Nothing had gone right and people were suffering all over the nation because of it. He couldn’t help but agree with the woman sitting next to him. “There doesn’t seem to be a silver lining, does there?”

It sounded like a lot of fruity things, and nothing against Theodore, but Taylor preferred to keep his fruit and sweets separate, for the most part. It didn’t meant he wouldn’t still stop by, though. “Sounds really summery. So listen, I’m gonna come by before I open up. Are you still open around 3 in the afternoon? I was going to practice a couple new recipes I found online. There’s a rainbow one for pride that has like, five different kinds of alcohol in it. It supposed to be really fruit. Maybe’d go well with a few of those cookies.”

“Almost too summery if that were possible.” Theodore lifted a hand to rub his forehead as he chuckled. “Yeah, we’ll be open until five.” As much as he loved working at the bakery, sometimes the owner’s recipes were very odd and varied from what was considered traditional. While it never bothered him, it did keep him from eating too many sweets. “Five?” Theodore shouldn’t have sounded so surprised considering the things people drank nowadays, but he never drank so the idea sounded a little absurd but fascinating nonetheless. “Sounds a little dangerous,” he laughed. “Oh yeah, I think our rainbow macarons would pair well with it too.”

“Well, I’m glad I could spare you that one at least.” Andrew replied with a chuckle. “Where’re you headed?” He added conversationally. He wasn’t normally a fan of small talk, but he really just wanted to stir the conversation away from the other’s condition.

When the subject was finally dropped, Theodore visibly perked up almost immediately. He pushed himself to his feet with the aid of his crutches and sighed heavily. “The bakery,” he gestured over his shoulder. It wasn’t much further of a walk, but at the moment, it felt like ten miles. “I have a shift there in about half an hour. What about yourself? I hope I’m not keeping you from something.”

Taylor’s schedule was mainly night-focused. It served him well when he was in Los Angeles, playing shows late at night, and came in handy now that he owned O’Rileys. But it did mean that he missed most of what occurred before noon, and apparently, it meant he could miss seeing friends for weeks on end. “No, no thank you. I’ll stop by. I haven’t been in a few weeks. What do you have for specials? Wait…tell me you have summer versions of those frosted sugar cookies.”

When Taylor turned down the offer Theodore simply shrugged. But, he as pleasantly surprised when his friends offered up the alternative. He loved when people came to visit him at work. With a small smile he nodded. “Oh good, I look forward to it.” For the summer months, most of their stuff was done with fresh fruit. He thought about it for a moment, trying to remember what he’d baked fresh yesterday morning. “The strawberry crumb cake is big right now, summer plum upside-down cake, fruit tarts –  Yeah, we have sugar cookies, pineapple frosted or passion fruit frosted.”

“Oh…” Andrew replied, suddenly feeling really stupid. As someone who, for most of his life, had been 100% sure about pursuing a career in the medical field, he didn’t really need further explanation. “I guess that explains it. Sorry if the concerned stranger thing was more of a hassle than actual helpful.” He apologized sincerely. “You’re probably used to that as well. That and people asking annoying questions. Sorry about that.”

“No, no, it’s fine.” Theodore shook his head in assurance and chuckled lightly. “You had good intentions, that’s all that matters.” He was in fact, very used to this sort of conversation and most times it was the way people apologized that stressed him out more. Usually, it became more awkward when people were embarrassed for asking and began apologizing profusely. “At least you haven’t asked me to explain it,” he admitted honestly with a small smile. “You wouldn’t believe how many times people have asked me what it is.”

“That’ll do it. I’m not usually up before ten in the morning, and not usually out of the house till noon,” Taylor told him with a small laugh. “Summer’s here, though—guess that’s why it’s getting busier. And I feel like a bunch of new people are moving in, too. I know this town’s bigger than I think, but it’s growing every day.” Which could be nice if he were in the mindset to appreciate it. Best thing to do was to just stick withe the few friends he made. “That’ll be good, though. Let me know if you need anything, right?”

It seemed that Taylor and Theodore were opposites in that way. The baker enjoyed the early morning and did most of his work before the time the other was even leaving the house. “It has gotten rather busy recently,” he agreed with a small nod of his head. “I suppose that’s a good thing.” The small shops seemed to be full of people now, places always busy and packed full of people. Theo forced himself to stand up and leaned against his crutches with a sigh. He nodded at Taylor, giving him a thankful smile for his offer. “You want me to bring you anything from the bakery later? I could drop it off on my way home.”

“You’ve got a lovely building for it.” The heavy box was a struggle for him to carry, but he made it look easy, just as he tried to do with everything he did. “I’m rather appreciative of someone opening up a bookstore around here.” Setting the box down carefully with a soft grunt, Theodore looked at the bookshelves now in front of him and took a few of the books from the box he had carried to put them on the shelf. “As much as I love the library, there’s nothing better than being able to purchase your own book without having to return it.”

Grasping his hand firmly she shook it with a smile, “It’s a pleasure.” Feeling energized all of a sudden she was excited to be able to grab some coffee and chat with the boy, he seemed sweet and Charlie always loved meeting new people and making new friends. Waiting for Theodore she gestured towards the direction they were going to be walking, “It’s just right down there. Perfect and easy.” she added. Chuckling she looked down at her attire, “Well as comfortable as these are they are not my ideal outfit. I’m a nurse, I currently focus on ER/Trauma but I help out in other wings as well.” she said with a nod. “I hope I’m not crossing a line, but the inner nurse in me wants to ask..if you don’t mind. What happened? Yano?” she gestured towards the crutches.

Theodore looked down at his crutches when they were gestured at by Charlotte. The topic was bound to come up at some point so maybe sooner was better than later. A small sigh parted with the young man’s lips as he gathered his thoughts. With her medical background, hopefully he wouldn’t have to go into too much detail about his condition. “I have MS,” he explained. “I have trouble walking on my own so I use crutches or my cane.”

Andrew frowned, clearly confused and having trouble understanding what ailed the other. “I’m not– so your legs are not the problem?” He asked rather perplexed, curiosity winning over his efforts to not ask a stranger about things that were none of his business. “Sorry, I just assumed, with the crutches and all…”

Casting a quick glance over at the man, he forced a small smile. “I guess I mean to say that I don’t need crutches all the time. Sometimes I use a cane or nothing on a good day.” There really was no easy way to answer the question without having to go into detail–something he wasn’t entirely sure the other would enjoy. MS was always difficult to explain to people. So, he kept it as short and sweet as possible. It felt awkward telling someone he wasn’t really close with, but he did his best to shake it off. “I have multiple sclerosis.”

“You have a nice profile,” he said simply, adding a bit of shading to his bottom lip. “No speaking please. I promise this won’t take long.”

He was about to thank the young artist but he didn’t want to disturb his work since he was explicitly asked not to speak. Theodore chewed the inside of his lip, sitting carefully so as not to move too much. It had only been a few minutes, but it had begun to feel like forever and so Theo peeked over at the drawing to check on his progress.
