Why Rocky speaks Like That™
It has just occurred to me that most people don't have a super solid grasp of how languages work, especially when compared to one another, and that this means most people aren't aware of why Rocky's speech patterns are the way they are in PHM. To those who've only watched the film, it should be noted that the linguistics are more detailed in the book, but even still, it's highly likely that most readers of the book don't know enough about linguistics to fill in the gaps left by Weir. And that's why I'm here! Let your local linguistics enthusiast fill the gaps for you.

Dealfish!
It’s a deep sea pelagic fish that uses its extendable mouth to suck in small fish and squid. It is usually solitary, but congregates with others of its kind for unknown reasons.

Is this the single most Eerie thing I've ever thrifted? Probably. I made myself unpack it in the bathroom just in case, I don't know, it crawled out of the jar and got wet stuff everywhere.
If you thought the visual was creepy.... combining it with the noise it makes when you tip it is not helpful. @shiftythrifting I think you will enjoy. For a certain definition of enjoy.
oh! Wallace Berrie Co. was a toy company founded in the 1960s - they were bought/merged with a few other companies over the years, and eventually became part of the company that made troll dolls. back in the 60s and 70s, though, they made a lot of figurines with "humorous" captions, some of which i think have actually featured on the shiftythrifting blog before. here's part of someone's collection, they're pretty recognizable in style:
interestingly, i can only find one version of the "pickled people" toy, not a full line or anything? the figure and the remaining letters on the label here fit that same toy, though - it's a "Dirty Old Man" in a jar. i'm also not sure what the fluid inside the jars were, but someone must have unsealed this one a while ago. the ones i can see online still have clear fluid in them, so i'm assuming this is mold that developed after it was opened.
definitely a weird and grody find, but neat nonetheless!

I'm not sure if Americans are aware of not-cars, but if they're not then I'll be educating them now.
This is a not-car:
It drives at amazing max-speeds of 40km/h, and can be driven by teenagers.
What this effectively means is that someone turns 16, gets one of these, turns 18, gets an actual car.
(For anyone counting, that's a product lifespan of about 2 years.)
This is Sweden's (Europe's?) solution to non-walkable suburbs. (Which are of course also used in densely populated cities.)
They're advertised as being "safer" than mopeds (for a variety of reasons, this is highly questionable), and "more efficient" than public transit.
Because these things drive at 40km/h, on roads where speed-limits often range from 80-110km/h, they're also incredibly common causes for massive traffic-jams.
Also, notice that the not-car doesn't have a registration-number. They obviously don't need those (I think they used to have them? But I've seen so many of them without any that I can only assume that it's legal), because they're not-cars and aren't in fact often actual cars that have been modified to be speed-limited.
(And obviously, if someone modified an actual car into a not-car, they definitely wouldn't make the transition easily reversible by flipping a switch. Because that would be really easy to hide from the police, and would therefore be super-uncool of them.)
(What do you mean most of the single-car crashes for not-cars are done at +100km/h? That's illegal.)
But yeah, because they're so prone to causing traffic to slow to a crawl, a lot of drivers get really fucking reckless in overtaking them. Meaning that their mere existence makes traffic less safe. Which is crazy.
Also, because they're primarily actually a penis-measuring-thing, they will be highly modified.
What this means is that it's very common to find not-cars set so low that they throw off sparks. And almost impossible to find one without a Massive Sound System, that they can use to blast shitty music and increase noise-pollution for literally everyone in the area.
(How do I know that the music is shitty? If it needs to be that loud to be good, it must be fucking garbage.)
Circling back onto the topic of safety, it should be noted that these things are designed to drive at 40km/h, so they're only really required to handle crashes at 40km/h. But they're driving on roads in close proximity to traffic going much faster than that.
In fact, the perceived safety of the not-car makes it a lot more tempting to take these types of roads than it would be a for someone with a moped. But they're also so much bigger that it's a lot harder for someone coming up on them too fast to actually swerve around them and not hit them.
And as anyone can tell you, the safest car is the one that doesn't crash in the first place.
So.
Increased teenage-mobility? Debatable.
Traffic safety? Negatively impacted.
Safety for the driver? Fake news.
Noise-pollution? Like you wouldn't believe.
Actual pollution? Lots of that too.
Conclusion:
Please just buy your kid a penis-enlarging ebike instead.

As trans people begin to organize politically, it is tempting to adopt the essentialist notion of gender identity. The cliché popularized by the mass media is that trans people are "women trapped in men's bodies" or vice versa. The attractiveness of such a strategy is clear, as the general population is more likely to become supportive of us if we could convince them that we are somehow born with a biological error over which we have no control over it. It is also often in tune with our own sense of who we are, which feels very deep and fundamental to us. However, as transfeminists, we resist such temptations because of their implications. Trans people have often been described as those whose physical sex does not match the gender of their mind or soul. This explanation might make sense intuitively, but it is nonetheless problematic for transfeminism. To say that one has a female mind or soul would mean there are male and female minds that are different from each other in some identifiable way, which in turn may be used to justify discrimination against women. Essentializing our gender identity can be just as dangerous as resorting to biological essentialism. Transfeminism believes that we construct our own gender identities based on what feels genuine, comfortable and sincere to us as we live and relate to others within given social and cultural constraint. This holds true for those whose gender identity is in congruence with their birth sex, as well as for trans people. Our demand for recognition and respect shall in no way be weakened by this acknowledgement. Instead of justifying our existence through the reverse essentialism, transfeminism dismantles the essentialist assumption of the normativity of the sex/gender congruence.
from The Transfeminist Manifesto (2001) by Emi Koyama. This quote is from the section "Deconstructing the Reverse Essentialism"

i think transfems should be allowed to be good at sports.
sometimes a trans woman wins against a cis woman. sometimes a cis woman wins against another cis woman too. yet only one of them is allowed to win without facing consequences.
it's not enough to support transfems in sports if your support hinges on us being bad at them.
