Jamie always thought Christmas in New York was magical.
From the light tours to the snow covered trees, the tree in front of the Rockefeller Center to the decorations inside of the Macys on West 34th Street, everything was beautiful and glittering with a touch of magic that always made Jamie feel like she was wrapped in a blanket of pure Christmas cheer.
Jamie loved Christmas the way Serena loved Halloween and when she found out that Serena had yet to experience Christmas in New York city, she immediately made the plans to spend Christmas and New Years there with her girlfriend.
Though they had been dating for a while (and Jamie had loved every waking moment of it) they’d yet to put a name on what they were. Jamie wasn’t one for labels. As long as Serena was hers, she was happy. But she knew that her feisty brunette girlfriend had walls around her heart as high as they were thick, that she was scared to get hurt, and Jamie had a plan that would hopefully make Serena see that she would never hurt her…
And that she would love her forever, if Serena gave her the chance.
So she booked them a room at the Hyatt Centric Times Square, bought them tickets to the rooftop New Years party and visited just about every jeweler in New York until she found what she was looking for.
She wasn’t going to propose. She knew that they weren’t quite there yet, that there were still things they needed to work out and she wanted Serena to know that she understood that time was important for her. She needed time to trust, time to open up, time to see that Jamie only wanted to see into her heart so that she could love her the way she knew Serena needed and deserved to be loved.
And Jamie was very much willing to wait.
But she wanted Serena to know that, wanted her to see that there was no rush, that she wouldn’t become impatient, that her love wasn’t one that would just fade with time. She was in this for real… and she hoped that the promise ring she now carried in the pocket of her slacks would show Serena that she was in it for the long run.
“What if she freaks out?” Jamie asked Blake that night as they killed zombies together and munched on some pizza that Jamie had made.
“She’s not going to freak out,” Blake assured her, focused on the screen. “You guys have been through a lot right?”
“Yeah,” Jamie said with a sigh as she ran a shaky hand through her hair. “But this is… Blake what if she thinks I’m proposing? Thinks it’s too soon? She’ll shut down on me and I don’t know if she’ll open up again and I can’t risk that, I can’t lose her. I-”
Blake paused the game and set her controller down, grabbing onto Jamie’s shoulders and shaking her playfully. “Jay, snap out of it. You’re going to give yourself a panic attack.”
Jamie took a deep breath, glancing at the coffee table, at the little black box that was sitting there with the lid open. As far as rings went, it was simple. Jamie couldn’t really afford much, and she did want to save for when she actually proposed to Serena. A white gold band was adorned with Serena’s birthstone and tiny diamonds in a single row, and as it glittered in the low light of the living room, Jamie’s heart started to pound in her chest.
“What if she doesn’t like it?”
Blake sighed and shook her head. “Jeez Jay, you’ve got it bad. I’ve never seen you this freaked out over a girl before.”
“That’s because she’s not just a girl Blake,” Jamie replied with another sigh, though this time a smile tugged at her lips as she thought about this woman who had so completely captured her heart and soul. “She’s my whole world… I’ve never loved anyone the way I love her, and I want her to see that, to know that I’m willing to do anything to make it work for us, no matter how long it takes.”
Blake smiled at her and squeezed her shoulder before picking up her remote again. “Then tell her that Jay. Just tell her that.”
The weeks passed and Jamie practiced her speech in the bathroom mirror, in the car on the way to work and even in the shower. Every time she opened the box and looked at the ring, her hands started to shake, her stomach turning as images of Serena completely rejecting it flashed in her mind. She shook them off, trying to remind herself that Serena loved her and that it would be ok.
Or, at least she hoped it would.
They spent Christmas as a family, opening presents and eating way too much, and then Serena and Jamie headed to the city on the 26th, giddy at the prospect of being able to spend an entire week together, just the two of them. And, as promised, Jamie showed Serena her New York City, just as she hoped Serena would one day show her L.A. They went ice skating, bought hot chocolate, watched the Christmas Special at the Radio City Music Hall and took the Christmas Light tour of the city. And every night, they stood in front of the large windows in their suite, gazing over the twinkling city, sometimes talking softly about different things, others just standing and holding each other, sharing soft words, soft touches and even softer kisses.
And then, in the blink of an eye, it was December 31st.
To say Jamie was freaking out would’ve been the understatement of the century. How she had managed to get dressed, much less actually tie her tie and fasten her cufflinks, she would never know. But she managed it, giving herself a pep talk in the bathroom mirror before walking out to see Serena looking…
“You’re perfect,” she breathed, eyes taking in the vision in red that was her girlfriend, all dark flowing hair and sparkling eyes.
“Not too bad yourself, handsome,” Serena replied softly, her smile melting what was left of Jamie’s already swooning heart. When Serena stepped forward to adjust her tie and her collar she couldn’t help but press a kiss to pretty, painted lips, smiling when the brunette brushed the pad of her thumb over her lips to, she assumed, wipe off the lipstick that had transferred onto Jamie’s lips when they kissed.
They grabbed their coats and made their way to the bustling hotel restaurant, sitting down to share an intimate dinner in a quiet corner Jamie had called ahead to reserve. Jamie tried to keep herself calm, the tiny black box in her pocket practically burning a hole through her slacks. But she did it. She made it through dinner and dessert, helped Serena put on her jacket and then held her hand as they rode in the elevator to Bar 54, the rooftop lounge where the five-hour New Years party was well underway.
The champagne flowed freely, the music selection was great and the city twinkled beneath them as everyone awaited the famous ball drop. Jamie slipped her hand in her pocket every few minutes, making sure the box was still there and squeezing it to ground herself, reciting her speech in her head over and over.
“Jay?”
She snapped out of her musings when she felt Serena’s hand on her cheek. Looking down into her favorite pair of hazel eyes, Jamie felt a sense of calm wash over her as she pulled Serena close, cuddling her and shielding her from the cold night. “I’m sorry baby, what did you say?”
“I asked if you were okay,” Serena murmured, cuddling into Jamie’s arms. Jamie smiled when she felt her girlfriends hands make their way into her jacket, burrowing into her as the brunette searched for warmth. Jamie loved the cold but she knew Serena had a much lower tolerance for it. She just hoped that they would manage to stay out here long enough for her to execute her plan.
“I’m okay, beautiful,” Jamie murmured, pressing a kiss to Serena’s hair and pulling her even closer as they leaned against the railing and watching the party rage on below them. “I’m happy…” she added softly, pulling back to look down at Serena again. “Are you?”
Serena nodded and smiled in a way that made Jamie just want to squeeze her that much harder. “Very happy Jay. I may love Halloween, but this has been one of the most magical Christmases of my life.”
Jamie beamed, Serena’s words giving her the confidence boost she needed as she noted that midnight was drawing near. Grabbing two champagne flutes from one of the many waiters that were working the room, Jamie led Serena to a quieter more secluded part of the balcony, somewhere they could still see the ball drop and the countdown timer, but not be too crowded. Jamie wanted this moment to be theirs, intimate and private, especially because the fear of Serena’s rejection still lingered in the deepest recesses of her mind.
‘11:50’ Jamie thought, taking a small gulp of champagne before setting the flute down, taking Serena’s and doing the same before taking the brunette’s cold hands in her own, warming them up as she smiled down at her, all the words she had practiced before fleeing her mind when she looked into Serena’s eyes, the ones that she did say, spilling directly from her heart.
“I’m really happy we had this week together Ser,” she started, shaking a bit as she spoke. “I’ve seen the city before… but seeing it through your eyes, sharing my home with you… it’s been the best week of my life.”
She paused, taking a deep breath and squeezing Serena’s hands again. “This year has been pretty crazy for us, but it’s also been the most amazing year for me. I met you and everything else just… took a backseat. You are… the most amazing woman I have ever met Serena Benson. You’re intelligent, and you’re passionate and you’re dedicated. You don’t back down, you don’t give up. You’ve been through some of the worst things a human being can experience and yet… here you are. Standing tall and kicking ass…”
Serena smiled and that helped Jamie relax a little more as she continued.
“I know that… you guard your heart from the world because you’ve been hurt. And I understand how lucky I am to have caught glimpses of that heart of gold that you have so safely tucked away behind the walls you’ve built to protect yourself. I’ve fallen in love with her… with that woman that you don’t show the world. The one that watches Halloween as a comfort movie and loves gummy worms, the one that wears Reptar joggers and big t-shirts when she’s lounging around at home. The one who loves carbs, and steals Ollie’s snacks and will always say yes to cheese…”
“Cheese in an elite food group Jamieson,” Serena replied with a single nod, a wide smile still spread across her face. Jamie grinned and nodded along, kissing the tip of Serena’s nose.
“I love her,” Jamie continued softly, releasing one of Serena’s hands and reaching into her pocket. “I love the woman who loves koala cuddles and who is an amazing mother, an amazing friend. And honestly, the best Christmas present I could ever ask for is having you in my life…”
The countdown began as Jamie opened the box, holding it up for Serena to see and watching the brunette’s eyes widen, panic grasping her heart momentarily before she pushed on. “It’s not a proposal… but it is a promise,” she said, smiling when Serena looked up at her again.
“I promise that I’m never going to expect more from you than what you’re ready to give… I promise that I’m going to stick by you through all of the bad, through all of the hard, through all of the struggles. I promise that I will always treat your trust as the treasure that it is… that I will treat your heart as my most precious possession. That you can trust me… that you’re safe with me…”
She removed the ring from the box and held it up between them, watching the stones glitter under the lights, their sparkle dimming when compared to the sparkle in Serena’s wide, hazel eyes.
“I can’t promise that it’ll be easy… because nothing that’s worth it ever is… but I can and will promise you that I will always love you. And this ring… is my promise… my promise to stick to you for as long as you’ll have me.” She swallowed hard, fighting the tears that had begun to collect in her eyes. “Because Serena… my life is nothing without you in it. And I never want to live in a world where I can’t have you by my side.”
3…2…1…
Fireworks exploded in the night sky as their lips met and Jamie could taste the tears on Serena’s lips though she wasn’t sure if they were hers or Serena’s at this point. She wrapped her arms around Serena’s waist, pulling her close just as Serena wrapped her arms around her neck, their kiss deep but sweet and so full of love that Jame could physically feel her heart swelling in her chest.
When they pulled apart, Jamie pressed her forehead against Serena’s, their noses touching as they caught their breath. Opening her eyes, she noticed that the ring was still clasped in her hand. She pulled back, using one hand to cup Serena’s face before holding the ring back up, silently asking, begging, the brunette to accept it.
Serena smiled, eyes watery, and held out her hand as she shook her head. “Oh Jamieson, you big sap.”
Jamie’s smile felt like it would split her cheeks as she slid the ring onto Serena’s finger, placing a kiss on Serena’s knuckle, then the back of her hand then the inside of her wrist before pulling her close and kissing her again, both of them smiling into the kiss, rocking in place as Auld Lang Syne played in the background, the city ringing in the New Year happily as they basked in the warmth that came from being totally and completely in love.
“Is that why you were squirming so much during dinner?” Serena asked as they weaved through the crowd, making their way to the elevator again, sides pressed together, arms linked.
Jamie chuckled and nodded. “I kept making sure it was there and practicing my speech which… was nothing like what I said.”
Serena giggled softly, shaking her head again before standing on her tiptoes and pressing her lips to Jamie’s ear. “And here I was thinking that you were strapped under that suit Jamieson.”
Jamie grinned, pulling Serena into the elevator after her and waiting for the doors to close before kissing her deeply. “Sorry to disappoint beautiful, but I promise I’ll make up for it.”
“Lots of promises from you tonight,” Serena said softly, her expression softening as well as she looked up at Jamie. “You’re sure about this? You’re going to spend the foreseeable future done with me… now's your chance to run.”
Jamie shook her head and pulled Serena even closer, kissing her and pouring all the love and happiness she could into the kiss before murmuring: “I can’t wait.”
“I can’t promise I’m going to open up easily Jay… I’m not good at that,” Serena whispered.
“Then it’s a good thing we have forever isn’t it?” Jamie replied, hoping to convey with her smile and her touch that she was willing to wait for as long as Serena needed her to. Serena smiled, warm and sweet, her eyes sparkling with tears again as they kissed softly.
“I love you Jay. Happy New Year.”
Jamie brought Serena’s hand to her lips again, kissing the knuckle right behind the ring. “Yes… it is,” she said. And it was… the happiest New Year of her life.
Ollie loved Thanksgiving. She loved being able to eat until she felt like she was going to pop, she loved watching football with her grandpa and Uncle Kyle. She especially loved it after her mom married Jamie, because she got to help in the kitchen and sneek bites of whatever she helped Jamie make.
Since she didn’t have to go to school, she didn’t usually wake up early. Besides, Jamie didn’t really start the fun part of cooking until after breakfast. But today, the smell of cinnamon and sugar woke her up and rolling out of bed, she shuffled into the kitchen, peeking around the corner when she heard the sound of music she didn’t recognize.
Jamie was in the kitchen, frying something that she was covering in what looked like sugar, which to Ollie meant that whatever it was it had to be good. She was about to announce her presence and offer her services as official food taster when Jamie turned slightly and Ollie saw that even though she was singing softly to the music, she was crying.
Debating for a moment what she should do, she backed away quietly, going to her mom’s office instead, where she found her sitting in her arm chair reading something on her laptop and munching on one of the things Jamie had been making. “Hey mom,” she greeted, closing the door softly and walking over to the desk.
“Good morning Olliegator,” her mom greeted with a smile, holding her arms open and waving for Ollie to come over. And, yeah sure, Ollie was 13 now, but she decided she could still cuddle her mom in the morning. So she walked over and climbed into the chair with her, stealing a bite of the treat in her hand and humming happily. “What’s Jamie makin’?”
“She told me what they were called but I forgot,” her mom replied with a chuckle and a shrug. “They’re delicious aren’t they?”
Ollie nodded, finishing off the rest of the treat with a smile before grabbing the mug her mom held out to her. “Hot chocolate?” she asked as she took a sip, tilting her head slightly. “It tastes like… cinnamon hot chocolate? And it’s thick…”
“She called that a long name too and then when I butchered the name she said I could call it atole.”
“It’s yummy,” Ollie decided, taking a bigger sip and licking her lips. “Mom, Jamie’s sad. I went into the kitchen and she was crying. Did you scare her into agreeing to a second Halloweeen by dressing up as Ghostface again?”
Serena chuckled. “Why do you automatically assume it’s me that made her cry?”
Ollie rolled her eyes. “Mom, we both know Jamie’s delicate. And we also both know that you’re… not.”
“I am offended, Olivia Margaret. Give me my atole back.”
Ollie grinned, holding the cup out of her mom’s reach as she finished off the drink before handing her the empty mug. “No, seriously… is she okay?”
Her mom made that face, that soft face that she made when she was thinking about Jamie. “She’s okay baby. Today is just a hard day for her,” her mom explained softly, running a hand through Ollie’s hair.
“Why?” Ollie asked, cuddling closer to her mom when she saw that she looked a little sad now too. “What happened?”
“Jamie’s grandfather died on Thanksgiving three years ago. She was very, very close to him and she misses him a lot. That’s why she’s listening to that music and making these for breakfast. She told me that these were his favorites and it was one of the last things she made for him.”
“Oh,” Ollie said, feeling really sad for Jamie. She had two grandpa’s now and she loved them so much. She couldn’t imagine something happening to one of them. “What can I do to help?” she asked. Jamie was always helping her when she was sad, making her her favorite food and playing video games with her, and now was her chance to help too.
Her mom was looking at her in that soft way that meant that koala cuddles were coming and before she could escape she was squished by her mom's hug. “Mom! I can’t breathe!” she giggled, trying to escape though she knew her mom was freakishly strong and she might as well just give up.
“You’re such a sweet kid Ollie Koalie,” her mom murmured, kissing her cheek before letting her go. “I think Jamie needs some of that sweetness, don’t you?”
Ollie nodded and stood, pulling her mom up from her chair and dragging her out of her office.
When they walked into the kitchen, Jamie wasn’t crying anymore but she was still singing and her eyes were puffy. She was pouring honey over the treats she’d made. “There are my girls,” she said softly, and Ollie watched as she looked away and wiped her face. “I, uh, I made more.”
Ollie walked over and hugged her tight, channeling some of her mom’s koala cuddle powers and not letting go until she felt Jamie hug her back. “I love you, mom,” she said, smiling up at her. Jamie smiled back, wiping her eyes with her sleeve before kissing her on the forehead and then ruffling her hair.
“I love you too, kid,” she replied softly. “Thanks, I needed that.”
“Alright Ollie, my turn,” her mom said, wrapping her arms around Jamie’s neck and cuddling her just like she had cuddled Ollie in her office. She smiled when she saw Jamie smile and cuddle into her and her mom said something that made Jamie laugh softly and shake her head.
“They’re called sopaipillas babe.”
“So-paw-pea-yas?” Ollie sounded out and Jamie smiled and nodded.
“Great job Ollie. Your pronunciation continues to surpass your mothers,” Jamie said, laughing again when her mom smacked her arm.
“Don’t make fun of me Jamieson.”
“What’s the drink called?” Ollie asked, walking over to look in the little clay pot that was on the stove. “Mom said it was atole but that you called it something else.”
“That’s called champurrado,” Jamie replied with a smile, walking over with a mug and pouring some of the thick hot chocolate into it before handing it to Ollie. “It.. it was my abuelito’s favorite hot drink, so it was one of the first things I learned how to make for him.”
Ollie hugged Jamie again when she saw her wipe her eyes. “I’m sorry about your abuelito mom,” she said. The music played softly in the background and she heard Jamie humming it as they sipped their drinks. “Did- did your abuelito like that song?”
Jamie smiled and nodded, taking a deep breath as she wiped her eyes again. “When I was little, he used to watch these really old black and white Mexican movies. There was this actor who was also a singer named Pedro Infante, and abuelito loved him. This song… Mi Cariñito, was a song that he always used to sing to me… it means ‘my sweet, little love’.”
Jamie paused, and Ollie gave her a minute. She could tell that she was trying not to cry. So she just stood next to her and waited, listening to the song.
“In the song,” Jamie explained softly, “he’s so thankful to have her in his life that he dedicates the song to her… and abuelito says that that was how he felt about me. So it’s… it’s our song.”
Ollie hugged Jamie again. “I understand your abuelito,” she said softly, smiling when Jamie looked a little confused. “I’m thankful to have you in my life too.”
“I feel the same way Ollie,” Jamie said softly, squeezing her just like her mom did. But Ollie didn’t mind that she kinda couldn’t breathe. Jamie smelled like cinnamon and sugar and her soap and she was smiling again and that’s all that mattered. She felt Jamie pull her mom into their hug and she cuddled into both of them.
“He would’ve loved you two. Just like I do.”
“He would’ve loved that my Spanish is better than mom’s,” Ollie teased, pulling away to grab another sopaipilla and munching on it happily.
“Show off,” her mom said, sticking out her tongue.
“Gringa,” Ollie teased back, smiling wide when Jamie laughed loudly.
This summer marked the fourth year Olivia went to summer camp and, although Serena was used to it, it never got any easier for her. She was a nervous wreck for four weeks every summer and, because she didn’t work in the summer, she had even more time to worry about Olivia.
Jamie suggested they go away for a couple of weeks to reconnect as a couple and forget about the outside world and Serena was more than happy to oblige, especially because her uncle owned a cabin that was half an hour away from Olivia’s camp. “In case Olivia needs me,” she had told Jamie and Jamie had to remind her yet again that Olivia was at camp with Alex, Elliot, Abbie, and Casey and there was a very slim chance that she would ask Serena to pick her up.
“But I can still visit,” Serena pointed out. They were in Jamie’s truck on the way to the cabin and Serena attempted to distract herself with a paranormal podcast despite the fact that a story about a red-eyed creature in the woods was not what Jamie wanted to hear on the way to a secluded cabin.
“Sure, babe. We can visit,” Jamie responded although she had no intention of letting Serena embarrass their daughter by visiting on any other day that wasn’t Parents Weekend. Olivia called every morning and sent them pictures every night. She was having the time of her life swimming and kayaking and telling ghost stories around the campfire with her friends, but Jamie knew Serena was going to worry regardless and she found it endearing how protective Serena was of Olivia. “Question. Does your family ever stay in hotels or Airbnb or anything like that? Is there somewhere your family doesn’t own property?”
“Nothing in red states. My mom doesn’t like being surrounded by conservatives,” Serena searched her purse for a hair tie so she could put her hair up in a ponytail. The humidity had taken its toll on her curls and they were starting to frizz. “This isn’t my parents’ cabin, though. It’s Uncle Ted’s. You met him at our wedding. He’s the long-haired one who smuggled weed across the border in a surfboard back when he was 19.” Uncle Ted was yet another one of the Benson cast of characters that Jamie had met at their wedding. It was that day that Jamie learned her wife was actually one of the most normal members of the Benson family. “He’s had this cabin for 30 years now and he’s always let Kyle and me use it whenever we want to get away.”
Just as Jamie had suspected, the cabin was luxurious and about twice the size of their apartment. Jamie was in awe of the kitchen and spent most of their first day getting use out of the expensive cookware and kitchen appliances while Serena spent her time in the hot tub in the master bedroom. “This one’s indoors, Jamieson,” Serena pointed out when Jamie went upstairs to bring her some gummy worms and wine. “No getting chased by bears this time.”
They spent the second day in bed which ended with Serena knocking out early. Jamie was lonely without her favorite person to hang out with, but she patted herself on the back for a job well done. She had worn Serena out in the best way possible so she decided to go downstairs for a celebratory snack. But it was while she was in the kitchen that she heard a noise coming from outside. She wanted to think it was a bear or some other woodland critter, but her mind shifted to the podcast that Serena listened to in the truck and she was afraid to look out the window and see a pair of glowing red eyes. Or maybe it’s an axe murderer.
She left her snack in the kitchen and immediately went upstairs to wake Serena. She shook her gently but it wasn’t enough to wake her, so she made another attempt by shaking her just a little harder.
“Jay?” Serena struggled to open her eyes. “What’s wrong? Did Olivia call? Should I go pick her up?”
Jamie attempted to remain calm, but Serena could tell that she was worried. “Olivia is fine. Babe, I’m gonna need you to stay in here. I think there’s someone trying to get in.” When they got married, she had made a vow to protect Serena and that was just what she was going to do. Uncle Ted was a baseball fan and there was an autographed bat on display that Jamie had every intention of using so she could protect Serena.
“A bat?” Serena shook her head. “My sweet Jamieson.”
“Where are you going?” she asked her wife when she disappeared into the walk-in closet. “What if there’s an axe murderer? I’m going to need you to stay in here and call 911. I can take care of it. It’s too dangerous for you to go downstairs, Ser Bear.”
The possibility of an axe murderer entering their cabin didn’t seem to phase Serena and Jamie realized why when she saw her tiny wife emerge from the walk-in closet carrying an assault rifle. “He has an axe. I have this. Who do you think is gonna win this battle?”
“Uncle Ted has an arsenal in that walk-in closet,” Serena told her as nonchalantly as if she were telling her about her uncle having a sports memorabilia collection. “My parents don’t own guns but my grandpa and Uncle Ted take the second amendment very seriously. Grandpa taught me how to use one of these when I was 8.”
Jamie followed Serena downstairs, still in awe of how calm and collected her wife was. “Babe, let’s just call 911. You don’t know what this man is capable of.”
But her 5’5” 108-pound wife was in Rambo mode. “It wouldn’t be the first time I shot an axe murderer, Jamieson. You remember the story of what happened when I was ten. Let’s not get the law involved yet. You know how we handle things in my family.”
That’s exactly what I’m afraid of. What kind of woman did I marry?
As soon as they reached the living room, they heard a rustling sound on the porch. “Jay,” Serena whispered. “Get behind the couch. We didn’t lock the door. He’s gonna come in. He’s just stalling to terrorize us. The camp is nearby. I have to take out this man so he doesn’t hurt my wife and my baby.”
She had always thought it sounded like a cliche, but Jamie truly felt as if her life was flashing before her eyes. She saw her childhood summers and moments she spent cooking with her grandma. She saw her first kiss and the first girl she fell in love with, but most importantly she saw Serena. She saw little glimpses of their time together from the day they met at the coffee shop to how beautiful Serena looked when she walked down the aisle on their wedding day. Serena was everything she had ever wanted and, with Olivia, Jamie had the family she had always dreamed of.
She looked over at Serena who was standing with her gun pointed at the door. Her wife was ready for anything which, in turn, made Jamie feel as if everything was going to be okay. They were going to survive the night; however, when the sound on the porch went from a rustling to the pitter patter of small feet, her wife gently set the gun down so it was leaning against the wall and slowly made her way toward the door.
“Babe?” Jamie asked. She wasn’t sure why her wife had let her guard down but she decided to catch up to her.
“The lads!” Serena said before flinging open the door to reveal four plump raccoons walking around on their porch. “Jay, get the two plates I have in the refrigerator and come join us outside.”
It wasn’t the most unusual thing that had happened in their marriage nor was it even the most unusual thing that had happened that night, so Jamie felt it was easier not to ask questions and just get the plates like Serena had asked.
The plates were filled with grapes and an assortment of Serena’s favorite cheeses and, when she brought them out, Serena kept one on the table and set one down on the ground. The raccoons immediately flocked to the plate and Jamie felt as if the sight before her was both cute and terrifying at the same time. My wife is a raccoon whisperer.
“Take a seat,” she told Jamie before biting into a piece of smoked gouda. “Welcome to the 2 a.m. Cheese and Grape Society. The lads and I are giving you an honorary membership.”
Jamie popped a grape in her mouth. “How do I get a full membership? Is there an initiation ritual?”
“Just bring us more cheese and grapes when we’re finished and you’re in.” Serena picked up another grape and held it up to Jamie’s mouth so she could feed her. “Don’t think I’m doubting your abilities as the stud I married, but last night I wore you out and I couldn’t sleep so I fixed myself a snack. The air was so crisp and clean so I decided to sit outside and the lads took it upon themselves to join me. I wanted to be a good hostess so I brought out a plate for them and, thus, the 2 a.m. Cheese and Grape Society was born. They must have remembered and wanted to have another snack tonight.”
“Ser?”
“Hmm?” Jamie watched as Serena tossed a grape into the air and attempted to catch it. The grape bounced off of her chin and was soon devoured by one of the raccoons.
“Had someone told me the second day of our vacation would start with having you in the shower and end with you aiming an assault rifle at the door and then us sharing cheese and grapes with raccoons, I wouldn’t have believed them. I don’t know why I wouldn’t have believed them seeing as, with you, nothing is out of the realm of possibility.”
They stayed outside talking until the sun came up. They told jokes and stories and revealed things to each other that nobody else knew. She couldn’t stop smiling when Serena recorded videos of the raccoons to send to Olivia and when they FaceTimed each other right after Olivia woke up. Jamie knew Serena would always be a mom first and it warmed her heart to see how happy Serena was when she saw Olivia on the screen. Serena was a mom, a wife, a sharpshooter, and a raccoon whisperer all in one and Jamie loved her more with each thing she learned about her.
“Thanks for staying with me,” Becca told her as they climbed the stairway to the attic.
Serena climbed each step slowly. If she had learned anything from her history with Becca, it’s that Becca had the power to make her trip over anything. The stairway to the attic was narrow and Serena feared she’d face sudden death if she fell and not just a busted lip like she did on the main stairway.
“I’d rather be here than at the party,” Serena responded, hoping she didn’t sound too desperate. “I mean we went to two parties last week, anyway.” Good save.
Serena was three weeks away from the end of her freshman year, which meant she was also three weeks away from being separated from Becca. More than anyone, Becca had helped her survive her first year at Columbia and her first year of sorority life. Becca had chosen her to be her Lil during the Big Sis/Lil Sis reveal and Serena was on cloud nine knowing that meant the two of them would be spending more time together. She’d think of any excuse to be with her, so when Becca was chosen to host the 50-year reunion for Phi Delta’s class of 1956, Serena immediately volunteered to help with the party planning.
It was difficult to focus when everyone else was at the house, so they opted to stay in on a Friday night when the rest of their sisters were out at a frat party. She had seen photos of what the sorority house and the girls who lived there were like in the ‘50s. It was a decade of elegance and refinement in the Phi Delta house. These women didn’t wear neon tank tops and short shorts in their college days like Serena, Becca, and their sisters did, which made Becca want to plan a party that would impress them and make them proud of the legacy they had left behind.
With one week left until the party, they already placed an order for the food and desserts and bought the decorations. All they needed was the right music. They wanted music from the ‘50s, the kind of songs that the alumnae would have heard when they were at parties or hanging out in the sorority house or while slow dancing with their dates at the annual Phi Delta formal. An iTunes playlist would have been easier, but Becca wanted an authentic sound that could only come from records.
The attic was well-maintained and not the typical dark, dusty attic that Serena imagined it would be. No one stayed in the attic and they never held any meetings there, but the attic housed mementos of decades past, so it was kept clean and organized as a sign of respect for the sisters who came before them.
Becca headed straight to the old record player and the collection of records on the shelf nearby. While she thumbed through them, Serena found a box of mementos in the armoire. There were sorority pins and photographs from the 1950s and, as Serena looked at them, she realized that so much about the sorority had changed yet so much was exactly the same. The clothes and hairstyles were different, but she imagined the conversations they had in this house were exactly the same. They talked about love and broken hearts, final exams and what classes to take, and their dreams for the future. She imagined them staying up all night to talk and listen to music like she did with Becca.
“Beck, come here! Come look at these!”
Becca was in the middle of putting a record on the record player. “I love that scratchy sound of the record player.” She walked over to Serena and put her arms around her waist from behind. “What’s this?”
Serena showed her a strip of black and white photographs that looked as if they were taken in a photobooth. There was a picture of two girls smiling and then two with silly faces followed by the last one-Serena’s favorite-a picture of the two of them kissing. “I guess it takes all kinds.” Serena flipped the strip of photographs over to see the writing on the back. Beverly and Shirley, Coney Island, 1956. “They’re cute, aren’t they? Do you think they were a couple? If so, I hope they stayed together after college and went on to have successful careers and a cute place in Greenwich Village. Do you think they’ll be at the reunion?”
“Serena,” Becca giggled. “It’s moments like this that make it obvious you’ve had a Hollywood upbringing. You have the wildest imagination.”
“You have guys bringing you flowers and practically begging for you to go out with them. I don’t have a boyfriend or a girlfriend,” Serena pointed out. “All I can do is live vicariously through other people.”
Becca gave her a quick, sympathetic kiss on the cheek. “Your grandma Caroline was in Phi Delta around this time, right? Have you ever looked through her pictures and other stuff?”
“She pledged in 1948 at Notre Dame,” Serena said nonchalantly. “It was cool that she and my mom gave me their pledge pins at Presents and were part of the ceremony, but I never really took an interest in any of it before joining. It’s all just something I’m forced to do.”
“Yeah, same,” Becca let go of Serena so she could look through other mementos stored in the armoire. “My grandma pledged at Ole Miss in 1951 and my mom in 1974. They wanted me to go there, too, and continue the tradition but like-if it’s between New York and Oxford, Mississippi-I think the choice is obvious.” Becca grabbed an embroidered sweater from the armoire and put it on over her tank top. “In the South, the sorority you’re in practically dictates your social standing and they’re known for being exclusionary. I mean, some of my grandma’s sorority group photos are with the confederate flag. Grandma still flies that flag from her plantation-style house. My dad is like half white and half Argentinean and I came out with an olive skin tone. I bet you can guess how well that goes over at Grandma’s garden parties.”
“Not very well?”
“Nope, but I’m way hotter than her friends’ granddaughters, so screw ‘em. Or should I say bless their hearts?” Becca said in a fake southern accent that made Serena giggle. “I’m just so glad that I grew up in LA where shit like that just doesn’t fly.”
Becca’s family lived in Bel-Air and Serena’s in Beverly Hills. They had grown up three miles from each other and, ever since she found this out, she had imagined what their lives would have been like had Becca not gone to boarding school in Switzerland and gone to school locally like Serena did. But at least they had each other now and could spend most of the summer together.
“What are you doing this summer?” Becca asked and Serena wondered how long she had zoned out while fantasizing about the two of them sitting poolside or going to the beach. And Becca in a bikini.
“I’m spending July in London with my grandma Maggie,” Serena responded. “I’ll be home in June and August, though. We should hang out.”
“Can’t,” Becca shrugged. “I don’t spend summers at home. The less time I’m around my family, the better. A friend of mine has a flat in Ibiza. I’m going to spend the summer with him.”
“Oh,” Serena continued to flip through the stack of photographs in an attempt at hiding her disappointment.
A slow song started to play, a song from the ‘50s that encompassed everything Serena was feeling and she wondered what it would have been like to live back then and slow dance to this song or dedicate it to someone on the radio.
“May I have this dance?” Becca asked and Serena could feel her face getting redder by the second.
“Me?”
“Is there anyone else in this room?”
She expected the two of them to joke around and try to dance the way they did in the ‘50s, but that wasn’t what Becca had in mind. She held Serena close-as close as she possibly could. She could smell Becca’s Ralph Lauren perfume and feel the softness of her hair. It was the perfect song with the perfect girl. She had never seen anyone more beautiful and she doubted she ever would.
Serena wasn’t sure if it was the song or the pictures of their two sorority sisters kissing or maybe a combination of both, but she cupped Becca’s face in her hands and delicately kissed her lips. They were even softer than she had imagined and she would have kept kissing her had Becca not pulled away.
“Serena…”
“I’m sorry.”
She wanted to turn around and go downstairs, but she felt herself being pulled in by Becca. “Don’t be sorry. I just need to know if you got carried away or if you meant it.”
“Does it matter?” she felt a knot form in her throat when she thought about the guy Becca would be spending the summer with. “I know you’re spending the summer with him.”
“He’s a friend,” Becca reassured her. “His girlfriend lives there, too. There’s absolutely nothing going on between me and him. I like someone else.”
Before she could ask who it was, Becca pressed her lips to hers. The kiss was passionate and possessive and Serena knew it sounded like a cliche, but afterward she felt like it took her breath away.
“I’ve been wanting to do that for a long time now,” Becca confessed before kissing her again. “You know how…Republican…my family is. They’d disown me for being with a girl, so I can’t-”
“Beck, I get it,” Serena interrupted to save her from having to say it. “And it’s okay.”
“I love you. I really do.”
Serena knew it meant she loved her but she could never officially be with her. “I love you, too.”
She didn’t know what hurt more-unrequited love or having Becca’s love without getting to be with her.
Before bringing the records downstairs, Serena took one last look at the two girls in the picture. Seeing them happy and in love filled her with hope that she’d also get to experience that with Becca someday. I hope you two are still together and I hope the same can be said about Becca and me someday.
A little drabble dedicated especially to @noitsnotshortformildred today, because I know you’re feeling down today and need some love 🥺🤍 hopefully this little self-comfort fic I wrote helps 🤗
And to all my softies out there: stay soft because you’re perfect just the way you are 🤍✨
“Have you noticed that tall, dark and handsome seems a little… down lately?”
Serena took a sip of her coffee, watching Jamie clean the kitchen over the rim of the cup. Though her wife had definitely amped up the “butch” in her wardrobe, hair and in the bedroom the past few weeks, something about her sweet Jamieson was off.
She seemed withdrawn, quiet and, as Becca had noted, down. Setting her cup down and nibbling on a strawberry, Serena sighed. “I’ve noticed. I want to help but I don’t know what’s wrong. Every time I ask she just smiles and distracts me with gummy worms or sex or a movie, or she just shrugs it off and says she’s tired.”
“Did you notice when it started?” Becca asked, both of them watching with twin smiles as Jamie and Ollie goofed off while they washed the dishes together.
Serena thought back, trying to pinpoint when the change in Jamie’s mood had occurred. She sighed after a moment, shrugging and sitting back in her chair. “All I know is she stopped sending me all those mushy messages she used to send… and she’s been working out a lot more…”
“Which we love,” Becca interrupted with a wink.
Serena grinned. “Yes, we do.” She paused again, watching Jamie and Ollie together, her heart filling with warmth at the way Jamie interacted with their daughter, how Ollie was smiling big at something Jamie was telling her before they broke into goofy giggles. “She seems like her normal Jamieson self, except she isn’t as soft anymore.”
“You finally teased it out of her, Serena,” Becca said with a snort.
Serena frowned. “I did not.”
“Did too. You’re always teasing her or calling her a sap and brushing her off. Remember a couple months ago when you killed that huge ass spider for her? You didn’t let her live it down for weeks.”
“Yeah, but she knows I’m kidding,” Serena insisted, crossing her arms over her chest defensively. “I don’t mean anything by it.”
“You sure she knows that?” Becca asked. “‘Cause every time she sends you one of her nauseating, albeit sweet, messages, you send the puke emoji.”
“Hey you mock the sweet stuff just as much as I do, if not more,” Serena argued.
Becca shrugged. “I do, but I’m not married to a softie who worships the ground I walk on.”
Serena thought back for a moment, back to when the messages had stopped, back to when Janie’s demeanor had changed. She was still loving, still kind, always present and she still checked in on Serena throughout the day.
But she had lost that softness, that tenderness that Serena had become so accustomed to.
And had maybe taken for granted.
“So, what do I do?” Serena asked with a sigh, realizing that she had probably hurt Janie’s feelings and hadn’t done anything to make it right. “She doesn’t even want to talk to me about it.”
“Well, for one, start acting like you need her,” Becca suggested. “Let her open a jar or build something. You are strong and independent and Jamie loves that about you, but you can’t tell me you don’t notice the dopey way her eyes light up when you let her help you.”
Serena had noticed and thought about how she hadn’t seen that dopey look in months. “My poor soft dumbass,” she murmured, resting her chin in her hand as she watched the two loves of her life finish up the kitchen, concocting a plan to get her softie back again.
><
“Do you want some help babe?”
Serena turned to Jamie, shifting the box in her arms and pausing briefly before her typical ‘I got it’ slipped past her lips. The box wasn’t even that heavy and she was pretty sure she would be able to manage. But remembering her talk with Becca the day before, she nodded, smiling when Jamie immediately stood from the couch and walked over, the dopey look Becca had mentioned painted all over her face. “Thank you baby,” she replied, rising on her toes to press a kiss to Jamie’s cheek.
“Of course, beautiful,” Jamie replied with a small half smile, following Serena into her office and setting the box down by her desk. “Any more you need help with?”
“Actually, I was hoping you’d help me rearrange my office?” Serena asked, leaning against her desk. “I’ve been meaning to do some organizing and deep cleaning in here and just haven’t gotten around to it.”
Jamie nodded, rolling up the sleeves on her sweatshirt. “Sure, where did you want to start?”
And so, they spent the morning cleaning, dusting and rearranging Serena’s office, switching out some frames and curtains, installing shelving and moving the furniture around until Serena was satisfied with how it all looked.
After they were done, Jamie made them some lunch, and they sat in the newly arranged office, the window open to let the crisp fall air flow through the space.
“You should sell these,” Serena mumbled around a bite of the chicken wrap Jamie had made her, noting the shy smile on Janie’s face. “I’m serious Jamieson. They’re delicious.”
“They’re alright,” Jamie replied with a shrug, though Serena could tell that she was touched by the compliment. Jamie took a lot of pride in her cooking and feeding Serena and Ollie was a big part of her love language.
“Don’t argue with me when I’m trying to compliment you Jamieson,” Serena teased, stealing a potato chip from Jamie’s plate before taking a sip of her strawberry lemonade. “Thank you for helping me with the office baby.”
Jamie nodded once, her smile growing warmer. “Thank you for letting me help you,” she replied, the happy look on her face breaking Serena’s heart a little bit. “It was nice to spend time with you and help out.”
Serena shifted, climbing into Jaime’s lap and pinching her cheeks playfully until Jamie gave her that ‘I’m so done with you’ look. Pecking her on the lips softly she said: “You know I love you right?”
Jamie nodded once, though she looked away. “Yeah I know, I love you too Ser.”
“Don’t make me bite you Jamieson,” Serena warned playfully, cupping Jamie’s cheeks again so that her wife would look at her. “I love you. And even though I know it doesn’t seem like it sometimes, I need you. And I miss my sap, my sweet, soft dumbass.”
“You need someone strong, someone who’s not soft all the time,” Jamie replied. “That’s who I want to be for you.”
Serena shook her head. “No, baby. I need you. The woman who sends me flowers and coffee and sweet little messages when I’m having a rough week. The one who helps Ollie with her homework and has dinner ready when I come home and who knows when I need a big ass glass of Riesling and a bubble bath with those rose oils that smell pretty.”
When Jamie looked like she was about to protest, Serena pressed a finger to her lips and shook her head. “I need the woman that makes me feel safe on those nights when nightmares are especially bad, the one who goes out of her way to make me smile even when I’m in the worst mood. The woman that reminded me with her big heart and big love that it’s ok to be vulnerable, to trust, to be soft sometimes.”
“Even if she can’t sit through a horror movie without gagging a little bit?” Jamie said with a wobbly chuckle. Serena smiled, kissing Janie’s lips again.
“Especially then, because even though they make her sick, she sits and watches with me because she knows they make me happy.”
Jamie nodded, swallowing hard and Serena could tell she was fighting being as emotional as she felt, so she pulled her close and gave her a minute to collect herself, running her fingers through her hair when Jamie tucked her face in her neck, humming when she felt her wife’s arms wrap around her waist and squeeze.
“I’m sorry I’ve been such a dumbass.”
Serena clicked her tongue softly, pulling back so that she could look into Janie’s eyes again. “I think we’re both guilty of that this time baby. I’m sorry I didn’t notice you were hurting.”
Jamie shrugged and sniffled softly. “You did, I just distracted you so I didn’t have to talk about it. I felt stupid.”
“Your feelings are never stupid to me,” Serena replied firmly, though she kept her tone soft, grinning when she saw a tiny smile curve Jamie’s lips. “Though I have to admit I didn’t hate your methods of distraction.”
Jamie rolled her eyes and chuckled. “I didn’t think you would,” she replied, finally kissing Serena back before cuddling into her again. “I figured sex and gummy worms would be my best bet.”
Serena smiled, kissing Janie’s temple and scratching the back of her head gently. “You were correct. But no more using them to cover up if you’re hurting. Deal?”
Jamie pulled back and nodded. “Deal.”
“I mean it, Jamieson, next time I’m just gonna koala cuddle you until you can’t breathe,” Serena warned.
“You do that anyways,” Jamie teased with a grin, digging her fingers into Serena’s sides playfully.
“Yes, but I have never used them for evil, so don’t force me,” Serena replied, not able to fight her own smile at finally seeing her Jamieson smiling again. “However, if you’re ever feeling like bending me over the counter like the other day, you will never receive any objections from me.”
“Duly noted,” Jamie replied with a smirk, leaning forward to kiss Serena again. “I love you Ser, more than anything or anyone in this whole world.”
‘There’s my softie’ Serena thought with a smile. She wrapped her arms around Jamie’s neck and kissed her again, her heart feeling light with the knowledge that her Jamieson was back.

For a couple of weeks every summer, Serena would return to her childhood home with Jamie and Olivia. She’d spend her days either poolside or at the beach with Jamie while Mr. and Mrs. Benson took Olivia to Disneyland, Universal Studios, and all the other places grandparents in the LA area take their grandkids when they want to spoil them. With less than a week left until they were scheduled to fly back to New York, Serena expected to work on her tan by the pool while sipping sangria, but Jamie had other plans for them.
She wanted to get some use out of the gym in the basement of the Benson house-the gym that was bigger than their apartment back in New York.
“No,” Serena groaned. “I’m on vacation, which means I’m not supposed to do anything strenuous, Jamieson.”
“Babe, you don’t do anything strenuous when you’re at home, either.” Jamie pulled Serena in so she could give her a kiss on her temple. “Your doctor told you to start doing some cardio. You can either start in your parents’ gym or in public where strangers can see you when you’re out of breath.”
Serena narrowed her eyes at her, trying to look angry, but her expression just made Jamie laugh. “You used to be nice, Jamieson. That’s the last time I let you go in with me when I see my doctor.”
Her yoga pants and sports bra were the only things Serena liked about exercising. Getting new workout clothes gave her a reason to go shopping and she made sure to pick out a cute, matching set.
Jamie had suggested she get on the treadmill but she hadn’t specified which setting to have it on so Serena set it so that she could walk slowly without any incline. Her baby was just a few feet away from her, getting a lesson on bicep curls from Jamie. Olivia was using two-pound weights in comparison to Jamie’s twenty-pound weights, but for a thirteen-year-old, Serena felt it was pretty impressive.
“My strong baby,” Serena said adoringly, still moving at a snail’s pace on the treadmill.
“Mom,” Olivia groaned. “I’m not a baby. I’m trying to get strong here.”
When her mom and brother walked into the gym, Serena knew her leisurely walk on the treadmill would be over. Her mom wasn’t one to exercise, so she sat at a table with a glass of wine and her iPad.
“I’m 67,” Melanie told her kids when they tried to get her out on some of the gym equipment. “I don’t need to work out at my age. I just need to make sure I have the number of a good plastic surgeon.”
“Keebler, what are you doing?” Kyle asked as he turned up the setting on the treadmill. “Don’t bitch out. I know you can go faster.”
And she would go faster, but only because she wanted to shut him up. She was slightly out of breath after less than a minute and she knew she couldn’t hide it from him. “Damn, Serena, your lungs are worse than a smoker’s.”
Serena stopped the treadmill and held on while she tried to catch her breath. “Fuck you, Kyle,” she panted.
It had been enough exercising for her for one day, but when Serena saw Olivia move up to the three-pound weights, she felt inspired to keep going for her daughter. The speed of the treadmill wasn’t as fast as when Kyle had set it; however, it was still fast enough for her to jog. She was pushing her limits and she actually felt good while exercising.
…and the view wasn’t bad, either.
With every bicep curl, Serena saw the muscles in Jamie’s arms flex. She knew her wife was strong. Strong enough to carry her. Strong enough to hold her up as she pounded the strap into her with Serena’s back against the wall. Serena tried to shake the thought from her mind. Time to concentrate. But with every bicep curl, Serena’s mind wandered to the previous night when Jamie was on top and using her arms to hold herself up so she could enter Serena at just the right angle. Serena had caressed her wife’s arms, felt how strong and hard they were. Her mind had already wandered to how strong and hard Jamie could be…somewhere else, when she felt herself lose her footing and slide off the treadmill.
“Babe!” Jamie set her weights down and rushed over to her.
Serena tried to hide how much pain she was in, but when she tried to get up there was no use in trying to hide it. She had hurt her wrist once by falling off a skateboard when she was a kid, but even then she was able to get up and dust herself off. This time, the pain was excruciating.
“I think it’s broken,” Serena winced.
“I’m gonna pick you up, okay?” Jamie knelt down so she was eye to eye with Serena. “Don’t put any weight on your wrist. Just lean on me.”
“Your strong arms are what got me into this mess and now they’re saving me,” Serena slightly chuckled.
“Oh, Serena,” Melanie sighed. “Did you fall off because you were staring at Jamie?”
“Good going, Keebler,” Kyle shook his head, not even bothering to look in her direction. “You still can’t control yourself? Busting your lip over Becca wasn’t enough?”
Melanie set her iPad down and walked over to Serena. “I should take her to the emergency room.”
“I can take her,” Jamie insisted.
“No, no, it’s fine. You stay here with Olivia,” Melanie said as she examined Serena’s wrist. “I’ve been on a first name basis with the ER staff since the early ‘90s because of these kids. I know the drill. Olivia, get your mom’s phone and her purse. Jamie, carry her to the car.”
“It’s not my legs that are broken,” Serena reminded them. “I can still walk.”
“Fine then,” Melanie winked at them. “Jamie, you can carry me instead.”
“Mother!” Serena gave her wife an apologetic look, but Jamie didn’t seem to mind a single bit. She was used to Melanie’s flirting and knew it was all harmless even if it embarrassed Serena beyond belief.
After getting her mom’s phone and purse, Olivia hugged her as close as she could. “I love you, Mom. Are you going to be okay?”
My baby. Serena kissed her cheek and was surprised when Olivia didn’t rub it off. “I love you, too, Olliegator, and I’m going to be just fine. I promise you.”
Kyle grabbed one of Jamie’s old hoodies that Serena draped over a chair to wear after her workout. “It gets cold in the ER. You should take this with you.”
“Aww, you love your sister,” Serena teased him. Had she not had a broken wrist, she knew Kyle would have retaliated by smacking her with one of the sleeves.
“You know how I know your mom is gonna be okay?” he asked Olivia. “It’s because her spongy bones will enable her to heal quickly.”
“Serena does not have spongy bones!” Jamie said in her wife’s defense, although she was trying to stifle her laughter.
“I used to go with her to her ortho appointments when we were kids,” Kyle pointed out. “Her orthodontist said she’s a medical oddity. One night without her retainer and Ser will have a snaggletooth.”
Melanie smacked her son upside his head. “Kyle, be nice to your sister!”
Kyle chuckled as he remembered that life altering day at the orthodontist’s office. “Spongy bones and the fact that she still weighs like two pounds. Mom, are you sure she wasn’t a coke baby?”
“Mom!” Serena glared at him. “Tell him I wasn’t a coke baby!”
“Well…” Melanie tried not to look Serena in the eyes as she helped her put the hooded sweatshirt on. “Considering it was the mid-’80s and I didn’t even know I was pregnant until I was four months along, it’s not out of the realm of possibility.”
Serena shoved her arm through the other sleeve, no longer caring about the pain. She wanted to get out of there and she wanted to get out of there as quickly as she could. “Can’t this family ever tell nice stories? And you people wondered why I wanted to get adopted by Danny Tanner when I was a child.”
“Maybe you already are adopted,” Kyle pointed out. “You don’t look like Mom or Dad. Not to mention Mom and Dad are tall, me and Lexie are tall, and you’re only 5’5”.”
“If I was adopted, then why do I look exactly like Grandma, you dumbass?” Serena was about to lunge at him when Melanie pulled her back, careful not to hurt her wrist.
“Jamie, help Serena to the car,” Melanie said to her. “And be grateful Olivia is a dream. My kids are idiots. My idiots, but idiots, nonetheless.”
I’m not sure how many we’re allowed to pick for the A-Z HCs so I’ll pick U and V for Serena 💕👀
U = Unfair
They both like to tease each other. Jamie's favorite is wearing the toy when it's just the two of them having a movie night. She'll pull Serena into her lap and our Ser Bear will forget how to use her words. Serena is a bit more ruthless with her teasing. When Jamie is at work, she likes sending pics to Jamie that get progressively more risque as the day goes on.
V = Volume
Serena was used to being quiet when she had "alone time" because the walls are thin in their tiny apartment and she didn't want to traumatize poor Olivia, but now that she's married to Jamie, Jamie makes it hard for her to keep it quiet. One night, when Jamie was going down on her while using her favorite toy, she had to grab a pillow and cover her face so she wouldn't cry out too loud. 😂
Can I request F and K for the HCs? For both Jamie and Serena?
F = Favorite Position
Jamie's favorite position is Serena on top. She loves the bounce and watching Serena move. Plus, having Serena on top gives her easy access to the girls.
Serena's favorite position is the missionary position, mainly because she loves the connection they feel when Jamie is looking into her eyes and kissing her while she's inside. An added bonus is being able to wrap her legs around Jamie's waist and pull her in closer.
K = Kinks
Jamieson has an audio kink. She loves when Serena is loud, but it can't always happen with Olivia (and Olivia's little gang) in their tiny apartment, so when Olivia spends the night at Elliot's house and it's just the two of them in their apartment, Jamie wants Serena to come as loud as she can.
Serena will claim that she has no kinks. She can still be kinda shy and she's still learning what she likes. Jamie thinks Serena has a praise kink, but whenever she suggests it, Serena just blushes and denies it.
Yay more Serena HCs!!! can I request O and P for Serena and maybe a little Jamie? 🥺💝
O = Oral
Jamie mainly likes giving and she's kinda hesitant about asking to receive. Serena picks up on that and she'll playfully smack her butt and say "spread 'em, Jamieson." Our Ser Bear likes giving and receiving whether Jamie is using the toy or not, but her favorite is when Jamie isn't wearing the toy and she can taste her wife.
P = Pace
Their favorite is when they can take their time and be slow and sensual and love on each other.
Big gay shout out to all the fic writers who graciously give of their talent to help us get through the day with a little hope, a little humor, and of course, a little smut. Looking at you @storiesofsvu @ms-calhoun @theofficialjerenablog @marchtomydrums. From all of us who read, please keep writing and sharing.
Requesting 46 & 47 from your HC list 🤍 tell me about our Ser Bear
46) Serena's first thought upon waking up is time for cuddles. She'll set her alarm fifteen minutes early so she can use the time to cuddle her Jamieson. As Jamie is usually asleep at this time, Serena uses it as her opportunity to be the big spoon. When the fifteen minutes is up, she goes over to Olivia's room to wake her up for school cuddle her against her will for a few minutes.
47) Serena can't sing but she loves singing for the purpose of annoying others. Ever since she was a toddler, this has been her jam.
