Tank, Rottweiler (10 y/o), Schuylkill River Park, Philadelphia, PA • “He goes between my legs when he drops the ball. When he’s had enough of fetch, he’ll just start walking back to the car, walking home. He’s got a big tongue – it’s always hanging out. He’s pretty chill now that he’s older. Rottweilers are smart dogs. I can walk him off leash, and he just knows what to do. He follows me around.”
Echo & Winter, Border Collie/Labrador Retriever mix & Chihuahua (11 & 8 y/o), Hudson & Bank St., New York, NY • “They’re good friends. Echo is very mellow, and Winter has more spunk. Willow likes the heat and Echo likes the cool. We’re from Ottawa – we take them everywhere with us. He’s been in Elvis’ house – you can bring dogs right in. If we’re in a hotel with multiple rooms, he’ll pick the room with the biggest bed. They also did Route 66 – that’s their claim to fame.”
Virgil, Great Pyrenees/Golden Retriever mix (13 y/o), 11th & 2nd Ave., New York, NY • “He’s a hospital therapy dog. He helps everything – kids, the cancer center, the psychiatric ward. He actually had two rounds as a dog model. It was random; a friend put out a call for an extra large size dog pajamas. He’s named after Virgil Caine because he was found hungry and barely alive in Georgia. But he’s no confederate.”
Charlie, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (8 y/o), 63rd & Lexington Ave., New York, NY • “He’s pretty shy towards other dogs, but not towards cats or people. He likes to tear up the garbage. He has a good temperament, and he’s a good lap dog – he sits with me while I work. He likes going to the country, too. We’re from Tennessee – we’ve been here seven years, but he’s a Tennessee boy at heart.”
Augustus Gloop, Siberian Husky (14 y/o), E 5th & Ave A, New York, NY • “You’ve taken his picture before. He’s such an aloof dog. Doesn't care or pay attention to anyone or anything, doesn't pay attention to other dogs, In the dog run, he used to jump the fence into the small dog run.”
Mirfy, mix (9 y/o), 10th & 2nd Ave., New York, NY • “He fancies himself as photogenic, but the lens makes him clam up a little bit. He’s half Pug, and half a million other things. He’s the greatest f*cking dog of all time. I think he was probably human in a previous life, or maybe an alien from another planet. He hates skaters and Frenchies. I adopted him in LA at four months – he was a stray, and he was at a kill shelter. He came with the name ‘Unknown.’ I had a cat named Guinness as a kid, and the other Irish stout is Murphy.” @instamirf
Marushka & Alizzi, Pekingese (8 & 5 y/o), Hudson & Worth St., New York, NY • “Marushka is very friendly, and Alizzi is not. She’s friendly at home. I’ve had Pekingese my whole life. They’re the best, because they’re very friendly. They sit on the sofa all the time. If you’re ready to play with them, they’re happy, if not, they’re not going to bother you. They’re very intuitive with your emotions. When you come home, it’s unbelievable when someone is waiting for you. Before her, we had a Pekignese who was with us for 15 years. When he passed away, we cried all day, and on the next day, we got her. And then we got another one.”
Peggy, Cattle Dog mix (13 y/o), Broome & W Broadway, New York, NY • “She’s a rescue from Georgia. She will not get onto the bed or sofa – we’ve caught her a few times in the middle of the night, but when we encourage her she won’t do it. We got her when she was seven months, so who knows what happened. She’s very deferential to cats. We have one cat, and if they meet in the hallway, Peggy’s like, ‘I’m gonna turn around and wait for another moment.’”
Arthur, Norfolk Terrier (11 y/o), 10th & 2nd Ave., New York, NY • “You’ve met him and his Grandmother, Freya, before. I’m sure he remembers you – he has a crazy memory. He loves attention, and people, and most dogs, except he despises Frenchies. Dogs make you a better human. I hope I never know what life is like without a dog.”
ADOPTABLE: Cupid, Beagle/Hound mix (9 y/o), Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, NY • “He came from St. Thomas about a year ago – we’ve been working on his training and adapting him to the city. He loves adults, but the energy of children gets him a little nervous, so he’d do best in a home with no small children. He doesn’t lick, he just head nuzzles – that’s his way of showing affection. He loves playing fetch and running. We work from home, and he just chills, but when we’re not home he also just chills. He’s non-destructive.”
Cupid is adoptable now via @badassanimalrescue! Can we find Cupid his forever home by Valentine’s Day? 💝
Jess, Scottish Terrier (8 y/o), 80th & Madison Ave., New York, NY • “He’s the boss. I’m his walker – I’ve been walking him for seven years. His owner gets him groomed every two or three weeks. You’ve photographed him in the past.”
Alice, Pug (12 y/o), Union Square, New York, NY • “She’s sparky sometimes. Only in the mornings.”
Dandy & Mister, Italian Greyhounds (5 & 11 y/o), Madison Square Park, New York, NY • “Dandy is short for Dandelion, and we call Mister misdemeanor, ‘cause he’s trouble. He’s rambunctious – he’s 11, but he never lost his puppy qualities. They actually don’t love dressing up so much. It takes me a while to get them dressed, so they don’t have a huge wardrobe. Greyhounds are nice dogs – they crave a lot of attention, and they’re big cuddle dogs. They’re my little hot water bottles.”
Does your dog have a minimal or an extensive wardrobe?
Olivia, mix (14 y/o), Spring & Sullivan St., New York, NY • “You photographed my other dog Rocky in 2018. I’ve had Olivia since I was 15 years old, so she’s my best friend. She’s a couch potato. She sleeps on me all the time. She snores like a bear. She’s the type of dog that’s going to refuse to eat until you give her chicken.”
i don't post her here often, as she *hates* cameras, but i figured for today she deserves to be shown as the brilliant star she is. happy birthday, opal!
Rigby, mix (12 y/o), 20th & Broadway, New York, NY • “She’s a rescue from Arkansas. She’s sweet as can be. She goes shopping with my daughter and goes up to the counter and begs for cookies. They all know her. She’s very smart.”
