The Bear Season 2 Episode 7, ‘Forks’

the episode starts and ends with repetition: shining forks, peeling mushrooms. i love how it reaffirms the message at the start: that a customer will look at a fork or a mushroom, and know that someone put the time and effort into it. i’m remembering syd saying, “i had a chef who would only let me zest.”

in episode 1, richie asks, “you ever think about purpose?” garret talks about overcoming alcoholism; chef terry shares her failed restaurant. was it really a waste? never too late to start over. seeing richie cursing carmy to waking up at 5:30 am, guessing sauces, gaining self-respect, and making people happy is so rewarding.

i just watched season 2 episode 4 of The Bear, and i can’t stop crying. there’s a scene that feels out of place, almost dreamlike. a stranger is caught under the fence, his face bleeding. marcus helps him get out. they hug, then he gets on his bike. shortly after marcus calls syd: “i keep having this nightmare that kristy’s calling me telling me my mom is dead, and then i wake up, and everything is fine.” i’m thinking about fear—anxiety that lingers, scars that stay. i love how the stranger just moves on, continuing his ride as if he isn’t injured. perhaps the only way out is through.

the quietness (something i don’t associate with The Bear) of this ep was so so special. i can’t wait to see marcus grow <3
