I just realized why they didn’t mourn Crystal or Laura Lee during the summer solstice; They only mourned sacrifices to the wilderness. They think Shauna’s baby died so she could live. When the baby died, Travis was confused and shaken because he felt the ritual they did during the birth failed. Lottie wasn’t. Lottie said the wilderness had given them what they wanted: Shauna. She never considered what Shauna wanted.

The group won’t let Shauna’s baby be her own personal, tragic loss. They see the baby’s death as sacrifice that benefited the entire group. It saved someone they needed to survive. They don’t realize how this might make Shauna feel guilty. Or how it dehumanizes the baby.
