chalice of the gods is so interesting to me because rick wrote some fucking deep cuts as it comes to representing depression as a older teenager with learning disabilities who's had terrible traumas brushed off casually by the people in their lives.

percy never mentions hobbies, and he doesn't have a major in mind for NRU. he wants to go to college because annabeth is there. he likes the idea of a younger sibling, but can't help but feel like it might be better for his mom to try a new start without him, with a new husband and a new child as opposed to the abusive family dynamic "both he and gabe" forced her into. because he implies he believes he was at fault too!

he's lost!! he's alone, because the system that was supposed to support him when he was a KID has failed him throughout his teenage years! his narration plays it for jokes all the time!

he doesn't have friends at his new school, and so far, he hasn't had meaningful conversations with anyone besides grover, annabeth, and like... KIND OF his mom? again, no hobbies, no plans, no Friends??? no acquaintances?? he's on the swim team, but we don't even learn his coach's name, his teammates' names, what he likes doing IN swim.
