Chadwick said this in a press follow at the NAACP Image Awards. Not sure exactly when but probably after the release and success of Black Panther. Someone shared this clip on Instagram. There’s tons of talk about the great work he produced while he was battling cancer. And while it is amazing that he was able to work through that; that’s not what resonates with me the most. It’s the fact that he was able to come face to face with his own mortality and find a new purpose in spite of his diagnosis. There’s tons of adages about how we only really live life once we’re faced with death. But I think it’s the rare individual who can tackle the pain and all of the emotions and go on to make inspiring contributions to the world. My spirit is better for it.

I find it funny when Brown people refer to themselves as “expats”. Not because it’s inaccurate but because it’s a politically charged label. It’s usually reserved for the privileged and only distinguishes itself from the “foreign worker” or “migrant” by class and you guessed it — race.

The only people in London referring to me as an expat are the real estate agents who are trying to gas me up into a flat in a neighborhood I can’t afford.

The United States does not hold the monopoly on racial oppression of Black people. I wonder what this woman’s experience is with indigenous groups and Afro Guatemalans where she lives.

I embrace wanting to raise a multilingual child who is well traveled with a broad worldview. But a strong sense of one’s self — a VERY American concept — doesn’t suddenly occur when you leave the US. And your ‘Black self’ isn’t magically found when you don’t see the classic indicators of racism.

Living abroad as a Black American is cool. I encourage it. I assume raising your children in a country different than the one you were raised in could be cool. But choosing to raise your children outside of the U.S. JUST because you think they’ll escape racial and cultural labels is just not realistic. You’re just sticking your head in the sand. It’s everywhere.

Irresistible vitality and intensity were cornerstones of her extraordinary life.

Last weekend I attended the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day Normandy landings. As this will be the last time such a large group of D-Day veterans may be gathered to commemorate and memorialize the day, there were special ceremonies to celebrate men who have been canonized in American history. No one judges these men’s sacrifice or bravery. Objecting to taking care of the nation’s World War II heroes would be unheard of and quite frankly - political suicide.

Why then are 9/11 First Responders being treated with such disdain -- and in Congress no less? The viewing public bears witness to the utter disrespect. For a country that touts America’s ‘Finest’ and ‘Bravest’, it boggles the mind why getting these men and women the care they need is not a priority. And the fact is -- it’s so fucking simple.75 billion over 75 years? What the hell is the problem folks?

Come 9/11, half of these legislators will throw on a flag pin and wax poetic about the red, white and blue. It’s pathetic and defies their civic duties not to mention common sense. When the next attack happens, who will show up, confident that their government will repay them for a job exceptionally done?

I’m a huge fan of Mindy Kaling! Her views on diversity in the workplace seem to sync with mine. I’m in awe of her work ethic. I know it seems contradictory but her hard work looks effortless. Sometimes I find that getting through my daily task list can be a paralyzing slog. Mindy strikes me as the type of person who jumps out of bed and just does it! Every day, she’s operating at 100% and at night she goes home and reaps the rewards that her hard work brings. Yeah, I know that’s how ‘hard work’ is supposed to manifest but still, I’m in awe of it.

Felicity Huffman paid $15,000 to get her daughter into NYU. Lori Loughlin paid $500,000 to get her child into USC. Yet we’re meant to believe that access to education is equal for all. These charges do not involve the schools themselves but there is fraud and dishonesty built into the system and it starts before a child even enters school, and in this case, with the parents.
