Soooo, what exactly is half the internet populations problem with therapy??
The amount of times I’ve seen someone reaching out in a post in various places, about how they’re really unwell/depressed/anxious, and they talk about it as if thats it and theres nothing they can do, and it sucks that they’re gonna be this way forever and they dont know how to fix it.
And the only responses I ever see are things like ‘yeah I feel that way too’, or just general support and sympathy....which is nice, but there is no one giving them the ruddy practical advice.
I never see a single person say ‘have you gone to a doctor? Have you got medication? Now the last step, have you started geting therapy? If you cant afford a therapist, have you tried CBT?’
Like, seriously. Your life doesnt have to be, you get anxiety, you get depressed, and thats it. There are actual things out there that can fix it. There are tried and tested and proven things that work, a whole range of things. You just gotta find the thing that works for you, normally a combination of stuff.
I swear the stigma around mental health isnt so much in having a problem now, its in some strange idea that seeking real solid therapy will somehow mean that you’re too far gone, or that you’re too weak. Or for some reason people think its not gonna help? The amount of people I’ve seen who said ‘I know it helped others, but I’m different, I’m just more broken, it won’t help me’ and then they get therapy and it works. Cos guess what, you’re not the one person who cant get better.
Outside of it being scary at first, I have no idea why people are so adverse to therapy. Yes, its scary to take that first step. But the actual doing it îs anything but scary. Therapists know what theyre doing, you know. Theyre professiônals, théy’re not gonna bite you or something.
No matter what option you take, getting over emotional problems will never be easy. Thats just how it works. What it comes down to is, do you want to take the step to get better, or do you want to stay where you are?
Trust me, when you hit rock bottom, you stop caring so much, and taking the plunge and going for it becomes THE option. You learn to be brave, everyone at some point in their lives learns to be brave, thats part of growing up.
I just think....the internet is not always a healthy place. These hug boxes offer nothing in actually giving people practicle advice on how to fix their problems. I see loads of stuff out there, trying to help with mental health, like videos and pictures just giving some comfort or a little advice, giving basically temporary relief. But nothing advising the best long term option...
GO TO A DOCTOR, GET THERAPY OR CBT.
And please, stop discouraging people from those options. I’ve seen several people say, ‘you should just accept what you have. Its naive and ableist to say you can fix this problem’ or ‘therapy seem scary to me’.
I know they mean well, but by discouraging therapy or seeing a doctor, they’re kinda saying ‘give up’, which is, honestly, going to lead to some people to believe there is no other option to their suffering then that last option that NO ONE should encourage.
Listen, internet. You can actually for reals feel better, maybe look into it!
