I called my dad today and was like do you want to hear some lab gossip?? And he was all for it, so after I told him about how we had to throw out shitloads of data collection because someone was lazy he was just like. Oh. I thought you meant a different kind of gossip and proceeded to tell me about how he got jumped by another scientist in his advisor’s lab and he had to re input all of his data because having sex on a keyboard will fuck up your stat sheets

I don’t trust or respect people who make it a point to talk about how they don’t take medication if they don’t need it, or refuse to take medication to get rid of pain. The suspicious link between crime and punishment for sexual assault

So maybe one of my creepiest social encounters changed my mind about punishment for criminal sexual assault.

It was in a bar where I worked, and a group of men at the bar were talking about an attractive young woman who was pretty obviously over her limit. We’d called a cab to get her home.

The guys at the bar were all expounding in fairly lurid detail what they’d “like to do” to the cab driver if it turned out he “took advantage of her.”

While all of those of those guys would have been considered presentable, successful, and admirable, none were what you’d call paragons of virtue. And I’m pretty sure every one of them would have had no qualms about getting a woman too drunk to say no, even those every one of them would have been “too honorable” to proceed if they were so drunk they passed out.

This is what passed for “honor” and “decency” before “date rape” was considered a thing, let alone something that should be taken seriously, let alone something that shouldn’t happen!

Anyway, there at the bar the creepiest guy in the bunch just started going on and on about exactly how he’d capture, humiliate, beat, torture, castrate, and then murder anyone who would “rape that girl.”

And a little bell went *ding* in my head. He was more likely than pretty much anyone else in the bar to actually, you know, “rape that girl!” It’s almost like he was getting pleasure just thinking about what atrocities he’d commit… on… his competition!

It wasn’t till years later that I read something Sigmund Freud wrote in Civilization and Its Discontents about how societies assign the most violent punishments for crimes its members most wish they could themselves commit. (His example was stoning for adultery.)

But… yeah.

Just going to put it out there that…

If you think “stranger rape” is more of a crime than “date rape”

If you think it’s worse if “she’s a virgin”

You think rapists should be castrated, executed, or otherwise punished by means disproportionate to punishment for otherwise similar crimes of violence such as attempted murder

You think prison rape is a good punch line

You’ve ever wondered how a “prostitute” can be raped

It doesn’t really register for you how men can be victims

You take accusations about Harvey Weinstein (allegedly preyed on actresses) more seriously than accusations against Brian Singer (allegedly preyed on actors.)

You, like our mushroom-headed President think it’s impossible that this person or that couldn’t have been a victim because “they’re not attractive enough, believe me.”

You say shit like “well, it wasn’t ‘rape-rape’”

You think it’s a good idea to distinguish between “rape” and criminal sexual assault

Then you might be part of the problem. At the very least you’re not part of the solution. You’re certainly getting in the way of a solution.

I need to be really clear that I’m not saying this from some ivory tower of rectitude and morality. That group of older, “successful” men at the bar I worked at? Except for the one particularly creepy one I looked up to them. Listened to them. Took them for role models.

Early on I believed every one of those bullet points, above. And it took years, and years, and goddamn years to recognize and unlearn them.

I’m uncomfortably aware that there are more items on that list that are so internalized I may never uncover them. I’m uncomfortably aware that I may never be a paragon of virtue.

But for all my imperfections and past transgressions a least I understand the uncomfortable relationship between the desire to commit and punish the crime.

That moment in that bar listening to those men was where I got my first real clue.

nobody cares if you just want to read Twitter with the free wifi. in fact we’re ecstatic you’re there.

don’t be afraid to touch the books. hell, taking them off the shelf and leaving them on shelving carts is one of the main ways the library counts usage and foot traffic, so don’t reshelve them yourself and don’t be afraid of looking at them!

most libraries now allow covered drinks, and many have special areas where you’re allowed to bring something to eat. have your lunch there, it’s quiet!

lovely large tables for crafts or art? they have you covered!

magazines and periodicals so you can read the newest events or pick up a new recipe? check!

you can even just watch a DVD if you have the appropriate portable screen and courtesy headphones.

GO to the library. LOVE the library. USE the library. you already paid for it!!

I have a theory that this is because the notions most of us have of “old gods” are pretty intrinsically European, and wheat was (and is) the staple crop of European life. It is quite literally tied to the ancestral rituals and beliefs of most white people. Odin, the Morrigan, and even Zeus are actually linked to a set of peoples who cultivated wheat.

Meanwhile, corn (maize) is a crop native to the Americas. It features in the white cultural imagination in a very different way. Corn is a motif seen not in our ancestral myths, but in a much newer genre: the American Gothic. With its focus on the tensions between man and nature and—perhaps more importantly—the United States’s history of genocide against its indigenous population and trade in enslaved Africans, the American Gothic is VERY preoccupied with agriculture. Our monsters come out of corn fields because corn is a symbol for not only what we did to the Native Americans (who were the first to grow the crop), but of what we are doing to the very land itself. Corn is a monument to our cultural sins.

Meanwhile, I suspect that corn features very differently in the imaginations of people of color. If you asked a Native American person or a Latinx person what sort of mysticism they associate with corn fields, I imagine their answer would be very different than ours.

TLDR: White people associate wheat with our ancestors’ gods because our ancestors grew wheat. We associate corn with terrible monsters because it is a literal sign of our own monstrosity.

Native American here, can confirm that small plots of corn feel safe and homey; ideally they should be interplanted with other crops. You find turkeys and possums and raccoons in the corn. It might tell you important knowledge.

However.

Giant monocultures of corn, where the corn grows unbroken for miles and miles, not near human habitation, devoid of local wildlife, just corn on corn in the soft wind? Corn mega monocultures? Those sound like screaming.

Our library ran the expenses and realized we spent about 3,000$ MORE than what we got back in trying to collect late fees. So? We dropped them completely. No late fees. Period.

If you keep a book, it auto renews two times. Then it comes up as overdue. If your overdue items exceed a certain amount, your account freezes. You can’t use any of the local libraries anymore until you return the items or claim them lost and pay for them. If someone else is waiting for the book, you can’t renew. Its that simple.

And guess what. Not only did we save money, but we /got more materials back/. More materials were turned in than declared lost as compared to before. There was no stigma to it. If you had already paid for the item, the money was credited back to you.

Because the people late fees actually affected were children and elderly adults - people unable to regularly get to the library. And the stigma of late items was dropped. Attitude and mindset are important.

we still have no late fees. And we are considered to be one of the top public systems in our state. People from out of state PAY to get library cards for a year because our online Overdrive system is amazing, and we have a ton of partnerships and interlibrary loan systems in place. AND we suffer less losses of both materials and patrons due to our “no late fee” policy.

Serve your public. Don’t belittle them.
