Do you guys have any suggestions on final exam prep?! Also, out of curiosity how well do you think you have to do to get an A?
Make your own master chart of reactions!
Try to know all the basic ways to answer problems, and then create your own problems and try to find solutions for them. When you’re really stuck, go to the professor for help. You’ll get some brownie points for trying harder than most people by coming up with your own questions!
Work hard, and know your concepts, and go in confident to the exam.
Hi, a lot of people have been telling me that the textbook isn't that useful and i'm considering just not buying it at all. However, I will need the OWL access code for the homework and I was wondering if you knew whether or not I could buy this separately and how much it would be? Thanks!
Sorry for the extremely late reply! The textbook was mostly not useful, probably best as a reference guide. The best resource was Organic Chemistry as a Second Language, and the other ones we’ve mentioned on this site as well. If anyone else is thinking about it, def just get the OWL access and look for used textbooks that are way cheaper instead.
I wish I had found this earlier -.-
Sorry to hear that! :S If you find anyone who needs this resource definitely pass it on to them! :) We haven’t had a chance to update as often as we wanted, but we hope it’s still useful!
Hello & welcome to all new followers! We hope you've found some of our resources useful, and if you do, definitely pass it on to your friends in need. If you have any questions about our site or organic chemistry, please feel free to ask us!
side note: if you notice any mistakes in our notes please send us a message & let us know!
Resources!
Well hello there! Welcome all new followers, hope you find the material on this site useful! Since this semester is coming to a close, and you're either starting your second semester of Orgo next semester, or you may be starting your first semester (uh-oh)... You may be in need of new textbooks, or better resources.
Here is the verdict:
1. Organic Chemistry as a Second Language - 1st & 2nd Semesters.
If you're taking Orgo at Rutgers, you might want to get both of these texts together since we completed all the material in these two books in the first semester (with the exception of a few minor things). These books are amazing. A life saver. An orgopalypse necessity! The best way to complement your classes, would be to buy these before the semester starts and begin reading through them. These should be your first stop to getting the very basics of organic chemistry down so that you can comprehend the complex material better.
2. Organic Chemistry for Dummies
It does have some information on mass spectrometry which I didn't think was well covered in the second language books. However, other than that it did not provide much value to my studying, and I wouldn't recommend buying it. If you're interested in that small section, just visit a B&N, spend some time and leave the book back on the shelf. Save your money!
3. Freelance Teacher - Videos
This guy is hands down amazing. He breaks down the concepts, takes you through simple to complex examples in a step-by-step level. These videos are basically recordings of his tutoring sessions, which is why it is so easy to understand (because he's teaching clueless students just like us. heh). Cannot emphasize how much you need to check these videos out as you progress through Orgo. So. good.
4. Your textbook
Treat this as your last resource. Most of the answers for your questions should be gained from lecture, office hours, tutoring sessions, the book/video resources I pointed out, and study group sessions. Your textbook should be used in the event that none of these are able to explain the info to you, and you need a direct source.
5. Orgo MCAT/Other Test prep
I'm in the midst of MCAT prep, which is why I can state this... use the test prep material! I realized while studying, that it provides condensed material that will provide a little more than the very basics you need to know. It emphasizes important points. Plus, you'll be comfortable with the test prep material before you even get to it when you're preparing for the MCAT. I personally think it would be a good resource to go to about 1 week before an exam, but I'm sure there are other ways to incorporate this into your studying.
**Note this isn't in order of importance**
What are the pros and cons of honors organic chemistry (orgo 315)? Is it harder/easier than 307?
From experience, I wouldn’t know how to compare, since all I know is based off rumors about Orgo 315 or anecdotes from friends. Those could be biased, but I’ve heard great things about the honors professors, and their textbook is supposedly much better than the one used in 307. Other than that, the material is going to be a beast either way.
Orgo 307, is no easy feat. You will fight endlessly to get a chair in the room, to learn more. There are literally more than a thousand students taking this course (in the fall), so yes, you will drag a chair from a far away classroom just so you can sit in the front of the lecture hall, or find yourself begging for a floor seat at the front (yup). You will hate that damn textbook they are using, because quite frankly it does not cut it. There will be discrepancies between what is said in class, mistakes made, etc, and you will have to teach yourself and each other. You will spend endless hours drawing figures over and over, talking about Orgo to everyone you meet. It kind of sucks you in, and you need to let it. But the great thing is that this is the only class in which I’ve seen fellow premeds bond together (pun intended?), by spending hours trying to help each other succeed. It is interesting to see how our common hatred for certain things banded us all together.
Anyway, there is no way I can compare the experiences, if anyone has taken Orgo 315, please let us know what you thought of it.
So the Orgo II exam is this Sunday....

And then in that moment of ultra pure concentrated clarity, I know
I got this, and so do you.

UPDATE!
A list of all alkene reactions you need to know is now up! Take a look at it! Its so beautiful that it might just bring tears to your eyes... not that studying orgo on valentines day hasn't got you in tears already. Any who, get back to studying! And yes, you deserve that pint of Ben & Jerry's, but just for today! Click here to see the chart!

Update
A summary of the Alcohol reactions has been added in the Reaction Mechanisms section.
It might be a bit early in the semester for those of you in Orgo I but, you will need this one day.
Right now it is probably of more use for you Orgo II students - to refresh your repressed memories.
