I've fallen in love again with an ex-- watercolor. Why have I been denying myself this pleasure for so long? It's just so damn fun (and easily transportable).
Making moves at the Denver Chalk Art Festival this weekend.. SUCH a fun and crazy event, with an attendance of over 125,000! Man, my legs are killing me today.
Work in progress: my contribution to the "Paco Libre" invitational event in collaboration with Frank Juarez Gallery, at Vanguard Sculpture Services in July. This piece is taking on a very "graphic novel" quality, which is pretty out of my realm of comfort... I'm excited to see it progress!
On urban gardening, self-sustainability, and preparing for the zombie apocalypse, 15 stories up
If you followed my old blog (you can find it at www.theoutlawprocess.blogspot.com), you'll know that for the second year in a row, we're doing an urban garden on the balcony of our apartment building-- 15 stories up above downtown Denver.
Last year, we had just a few tomato and pepper plants, and a bucket o' lettuce. This year, we've expanded our repertoire and are growing four different kinds of tomatoes, black Hungarian peppers, wild leeks, spinach, mustard greens, cilantro, Italian parsley, several different kinds of lettuce, chives, basil, yellow lemon cucumbers, rosemary, oregano, bok choy, beets, potatoes in a grow bag, and a raspberry bush (which was planted last year-- we're hoping for fruit this year!). AND we started composting last summer as well, so a good deal of our fertilizer comes from our own banana peels, coffee grounds and other disposable food items, instead of going into the trash and down the garbage chute. All of this is happening in a roughly 8' x 12' space.
Here's a picture of our progress... the tomato plants were starters, but we're beginning to get lots of sprouts, too! Our balcony is going to be so lush and green this year... and we'll be able to get much of our produce from just opening the screen door and stepping outside, even though we're downtown in a big city. Now that's cool.
Progress.
Working on a new mixed media piece from a photo I took in New Orleans when I was there in March.. laying down the outline in ink on canvas.
“Lou had long since cut out fashion and all radio but the Red Sox. In the past few years she had let go her ties to people she did not like, to ironing, to dining out in town, and to buying things not necessary and that themselves needed care. She ignored whatever did not interest her. With those blows she opened her days like a pinata. A hundred freedoms fell on her. She hitched free years to her lifespan like a kite tail. Everyone envied her the time she had, not noticing that they had equal time.” - Annie Dillard, The Maytrees
New blog/old blog
Oh, hello Tumblr! Blogspot, it’s been real, but I’ve been encouraged by a few other creative friends to shift my loyalties because this is simply a better visual format for we artist folk. So far, I’d have to agree.
Find my old blogs at www.theoutlawprocess.blogspot.com. Tune in here for the new ones.
