“The death toll from the devastating earthquake that destroyed entire cities in southeast Turkey and Northern Syria has now surpassed 25,000. Tens of thousands of additional people are feared dead beneath the rubble. The city of Antakya, the capital of Turkey's Hatay province, has been virtually wiped out in the disaster.
This catastrophe is exacerbated by freezing temperatures and winter storms, over a decade of US imperialist sanctions on Syria, and systematic failings and negligence on the part of the AKP government in Turkey, and the death toll will only increase under these conditions.
The crisis on the ground is beyond critical and time is of the essence. We urgently ask every one of you to support relief work right now by contributing to this solidarity fund.
People’s organizations are on the ground and leading the efforts to rescue, rebuild, and provide relief for the tens of thousands of affected people who face winter without a home, on top of the loss of their family members and urgent need for medical attention. This relief work is centered in Hatay province and is providing urgent aid to Turks, Kurds, Syrian Arabs, all left to survive on their own by the Turkish government.
We also know that continued US sanctions on Syria are a quiet form of genocide on top of many years of war. We demand an end to sanctions so that we (and the world) can deliver relief without the threat of criminal penalty.”
