Work, Work, Work
Despite himself Nate found his hand moving up and out in preparation for giving his little pain-in-the-ass a swift, sharp smack to the back of the head as was his prerogative. He sighed and dropped it back around the other man’s shoulders, thinking for a second. “Korean is just fine” he says, allowing Peter this small victory. His little brother has always liked to feel useful, after all.
It was now Nate’s turn to snort in amusement. “I thought the Navy was… educational when it came to new and exciting obscenities. THEN I went into politics, and had to deal with the charming and inventive people of New York.” He grins at Pete, being fully aware that his own vocabulary has never exactly been squeaky clean, and guides him out of the way of a harassed looking intern before letting him go.
“But at least it’s getting Ma off your back for awhile, giving you some space. She’ll come around eventually, but you gotta give us something to work with here Pete, changing bedpans and changing TV channels is not exactly a prestigious career.” He chooses to conveniently ignore all the nurses who’d done so much to make his (varied and lengthy) hospital stays more comfortable. “Maybe she’d feel a little better if you got a promotion, or something?” he adds with a shrug.

Peter’s not about to tell Nate that a lot of the words he learned, he learned from eavesdropping on Nate when he’d come home on leave. Ma would’ve had a fit if she’d known and it was a nice, safe, secret that he could have all for himself. Not something well known in the Petrelli family. He could feel Nate’s hand moving and he almost ducked but then it went to his shoulders as Nate deftly steered them out the front doors and away from the intern headed their way.
Blinking at the bright light of the sun after being inside for so long, Peter glanced up and down the street before heading towards the restaurant. “That’s not all there is, Nate,” he sighed, not really wanting to get into this again. “We do more for the patients than the doctors do. They come in, give a few orders and breeze out. Nurses do everything.” Which is why he wanted to be one. There wasn’t much point in rehashing it though, Nate and Ma would never understand.
“Maybe, head nurse might be okay but then I’d be stuck doing all the paperwork, which I hate.” he jerked his thumb back over his shoulder back towards Nate’s office. “I like being hands on.” Needing to change the subject, he grinned and nodded towards a bus sliding by with Nate’s charming smile plastered on it. “What’s it like, seeing your face everywhere? Think you’ll win the election?”
