Welcome to the official blog for The Phantom Agent: Ride or Die Project. This is a fan-game based on The Phantom Agent and Ride or Die from Pixelberry's Choices game.

The game is currently in development and a demo of it can be accessed in the official itch.io page.

You can follow the progress of this project in the Progress Tracker.

After years of dedicated training, you are finally prepared for your first official mission as a fully fledged Phantom Agent. But the mission assigned to you stirs up a past you thought you'd left behind. They say you can't run from your past forever, after all...

We really do need a second book, don't we?

I've been a fan of Choices since the beginning - the good old days of The Crown & The Flame without the redesigns and cash-grabs for choices that were free on the original, The Freshman series with an iconic cast of characters, High School Story and Red Carpet Diaries as a nod to Pixelberry's other games, and many others... There was so much soul and love and hard work poured into the stories!

Now we open the app and we see the dawn of AI with their creepy smiles and questionable decisions in diamond scene pricings - not for all books, granted. But it overshadows the good stories.

I've always thought I could make the little headcanons I had for each book into something real, I just never felt the need to do it - the app was spitting out great stories, the characters were interesting, Mona (and others) kidnapped my imagination and I absolutely did not want to be rescued. And if you're here - a fan, just like me - you probably miss all of it too.

Apologies for the rant, but if you're still here then... which other books/series would you like to see coming to life again?

Chapter 2 - Old Friends

Chapter 2 of The Phantom Agent: Ride or Die project is now fully developed. This chapter will not be made available yet and I don't have a set date as to when it will be available for everyone to play but I wanted to give you all an update anyway.

P.S.: Did you know the RoD crew is canon in an ending of a different choices book? Just saying...

Hi!! First off I love the project so far, it shows so much love for both stories and I’m loving the direction it’s headed in. I wanted to ask if it would be possible to make Mona look a bit more like her original character(at least haircut wise), as I think a lot of people loved her for that!

I feel like every time anyone asks me a question I spill all this project's secrets on Tumblr 😂

Anyway, here's another one:

Mona (and Colt and Ingrid) are placeholder or default characters. What do I mean by this? I think it's unfair that you get to pick your Logan but neither of the other LIs - the idea is that all 4 of them will have options for you to pick from. It won't be exactly like Logan; I'm probably going to keep the base skin/face and allow you to pick the hairstyle. Around 3 or 4 options for each.

The characters are older and I wanted their styles to reflect that but I also want the decision to ultimately belong to you, the player.

So as of now those are default characters. Further along the way I will be allowing for character customization but I wanted to get all the chapters programmed before I inevitably dive back into the madness of Choices asset sprites (as a sidenote, this is why Chapter 2 is taking me so long. I fell down the sprites rabbit hole and I can't find my way back to the script).

This option will most likely not be available on the first version of the project but I wanted to let you know that yes, you can have whatever Mona you want (or Ingrid, or Colt, or Logan, we don't judge). It is indeed in the plan.

One more thing! If any of you finds any hairstyle/outfit that you think would fit a character feel free to let me know! I don't guarantee that it will be used but I always appreciate anyone that dives into the hellscape that is the google drive of character assets (risking your own sanity) for a game we all love.

I'm a third of the way done with Chapter 2 and it's taking me a lot longer than I expected so I figured I'd post an update.

Why. Did. I. Want. The. Choices. To. Matter.

This is what happens when there's 20+ choices per chapter, with almost all of them having a direct impact on the characters or the plot. I'm not saying everything you do will be super important but I made a point of having the choices at least reflect something.

Let me give you an example from chapter 1. If you choose to tell Ingrid her hair looks like Barbie puked on it (besides losing a few relationship points with her) the dialogue starts reflecting that by making it a recurring inside joke between them. Codename Barfie, is what I like to call it.

Not all options will do this and not all choices will be important - some are only there for exposition. Exemple again from chapter 1, the loop choice with Mona to get info on Logan, Colt, and the Velvet Jackals. 0% impactful, 100% informational.

I do, however, want a specific situation to be reflected in game: what happens when other characters watch the MC flirt with someone?

hi i’m already so excited about this project!! i’m also curious tho, why combine ride or die and the phantom agent? is it going to be more focused on one of these series over the other or pretty balanced between the two? and how much are you pulling from the cancelled rod sequel if at all? sorry for the 20 questions but i’m already invested lmfao

Those are all very good questions - and you are right, I did get inspiration from the cancelled RoD sequel.

I'll start by saying I got the idea because of that cancelled book - how the MC was going to be approached by FBI agents and needed to get the crew back together. But then I thought why should I just settle for that? Why not make use of the rest of the Choice's universe?

After all, by the end of the book the MC was getting her life back together. Why not follow in her father's footsteps? Why not take it a step further? Something more high stakes, that would fill her need for adrenaline?

I liked TPA (though I'll say I wish it wasn't a single LI book, I would have romanced the hell out of Vivian), and I wanted this story to be a lot more high stakes than just "steal cars, get arrested". Not to spoil anything, but this story isn't just about a crew stealing cars - it's a bit more high stakes.

As for the balance between the series, I would love to say it's going to be pretty balanced but realistically I expect that it will seem to lean more into RoD only because of the characters - they have history and that shows. Of course we also have the original crew from TPA and they are secret agents so there's always a component from that universe at play somehow. The point system, for example, was something I got from TPA. Your character would get random points for being smooth but those never really came to anything. So, TPA and RoD will have center stage, but I will say - without wanting to spoil anything - that I'm considering mixing another book here to a lesser extent. I'm currently testing that idea on chapter 2.

I'm going to finish this post by saying that I'm a big fan of It Lives Within - it's the gold standard for Choice's fan games. I don't think I can reach that standard but I want to at least make a game that feels as good as that. That you have closure on a book (or more than one) that otherwise felt dropped by Pixelberry.

Hi everyone!

I was coding chapter 2 for this fan project and it got me thinking about who is the most popular LI from the original Ride or Die and why.

I've played all routes and I want to have an unbiased approach to creating the new scenes for these characters but I'd still like to know what were everyone's thoughts on the original characters.
