The third album from Ventura, CA-based electronic artist Black Sails, entitled Functions, is available on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, and in limited-edition clear vinyl. This 7-song album blends computer-generated experimentation with middle eastern, symphonic, and dance-club influences.

Nic TVG and Dot Notation - Because Tomorrow I Won't I rarely listen to amen drums these days, for unknown reasons, and when I do, it’s probably something from Nic TVG or the legendary Pinecone Moonshine imprint. This beauty is not even fresh off the boat, it’s coming out one month from the day I’m publishing this. Needs more love!
How many social protest songs have you seen in the charts this last decade? What does that mean?
An article I wrote a while ago for another blog and life has just written its final paragraph
More than just a parody, I actually recommend a first listening without watching the visual. Not that is anything wrong with the video, but once seen, it cannot be unseen.

IGORRR - VERY NOISE
I see this as “Primus meets Squarepusher” which is one of the most mental musical crossbreed you can think of. Igorrr made it happen! And MeatDept topped it with a great video that adds a new level to the insanity. Big up Metal Blade Records for supporting this artist’s idiosyncrasies!

DRIVE TO AMNESIA - “FIRST SIGHT”
This touched me! Which is the most important thing. But I also love the orchestration as well and how it balances the older school and the new school influences. A track that will stay with me! Drive to Amnesia is a synth-pop / electro-pop group from Orleans, France. Created in 2019, DtA has invented its own universe, surfing on pop, electro and synth pop influences. The music of the group is defined by the use of hardware or software synthesizers by Fabien, fused with the acoustic drums of Maxime, the ensemble being completed by the special voice timbre of Mélanie. "Driven by current and universal themes, and inspired by groups such as Archive, Depeche Mode or IAMX, DtA evolves in a world that is both dark and bewitching", in group's own words. "First Sight" is one of the three new songs premiered a few weeks ago on band's new Soundcloud page, hit it up for more goodies!
KANSY - “WAZA”
This song came to me as a breath of pure oxygen, at a time when I was just after a binge on modern African music, mostly dance / electronic. I say that because most of what I've been listening lately from that area is really advanced modern production, in trends and everything, but lacking creativity and authenticity more and more each year. It's like many African artists are trying to find the lowest common denominator between their own skills and the worst quality Western pop. Which is a bit of a crime, in my eyes. Luckily for me, as a kid I had the best mentor and guide through tropical music history, from Africa to Caribbeans and beyond, the only specialized DJ and record collector of such things I heard of in my country, at the time. As a grown up, I often went to concerts in African squats from Spain and Portugal, where African gathered to play for Africans, maybe more often than to big festival world music gigs. I had the chance to listen to the evolution of music on that continent for the last 50 years or so. I loved the early times when the music was recorded with Western equipment, many times in Western studios, but stayed purely African, while Western music was just an influence that you might notice or not sometimes. This track and all the brand new album by Burkina Fasso artist Kansy takes me back to those genuine vibes. My nostalgia is not for the times, but for the vibes. If you're after exotic pop and easy listening, this is not for you. If you are after the African roots of our music, as expressed in modern times, this is your luck! Maybe this music is not unique either, it shouldn't be, actually, it's just that it doesn't seem to get through much lately, sinking in an ocean of autotune tracks. So I'm trying to help. I also love the sense of natural serenity that comes out through this track and a few others of the album. To put this in music, you need to have it in your soul. To have it there, you need to be balanced and at peace while grounded in reality. That's why there's not much of this feeling in contemporary Western music. Undress for a moment your local cultural conditioning and let this get to you and feed your primal soul. AN MA - “OSAKA” EP
When it comes to arts and aesthetics, any noob knows the main issue with minimalism: it's a narrow path and it's too easy to slip from simple to simplistic / meaninglessness. That's precisely one of the main reasons I love Austrian artist An Ma and all of his releases so far: he's an acrobatics master, he seems to have no problem walking the thin line almost without hesitation and so far he has never fallen on the wrong side. His latest EP whispers to me something like "I got this!". This is why today, unlike usually, I review an EP, not just a track. In artist's words: <<„Osaka“, after „Kitahama Ghosts“ is the second part in a series of releases inspired by events that took place in Osaka 2017. Whereas on „Kitahama Ghosts“ the focus was lying on the experimentation with electronic live improvisation, ambient and repetition, „Osaka“ sounds more structured and composed with a strong focus on the piano as harmonic leadvoice.>>
Bleeps, glitches and warm pianos have rarely sat together so nicely, creating such a rich evocative ambient. That spells "success" in this niche. Some of the tracks are not just movie soundtracks, they are audio-cinematography, if you catch my drift. I picked one to create a visual for it and offer it to you in exclusivity for Youtube, with the kind agreement from the artist and the label, Syncopathic Records, thank you! Others bits sound as if Aphex Twin has updated his setup and has just discovered DMT. While some other parts are just like fine tickles testing if you haven't become an insensitive bot. It's just simply great minimal experimental cinematic mostly electronic ambient music. You need to listen to this stuff from time to time to reset your sensors and scales.
Out now on Cassette & Digital, available from Bandcamp and all other major digital outlets. Premiere: Arrhes - “Au Revoir Twillingate“
It's harder and harder for me to find engaging ambient music that really captures me and keeps me hooked, but I found an exception and you've probably never heard of it, few people did. I've been sent recently this tune that totally did it for me, like a Twin Peaks episode back in the times! It has a sweet tension which I visualize as a sunny, yet foggy, peaceful, post-apocalyptic day for the last man on Earth.
Arrhes is a duo of brothers from Montreal, Canada. Playing in a rock band was their first musical endeavor. Then, their minds got blown when they discovered ambient and experimental music. Drones, field recordings and minimal beats soon started to complement the bass and the guitars. Now they experiment mostly with guitars and pedals trying to expand their sound.
They're currently about to drop an album titled "The Village", which has been mostly inspired by a trip to Newfoundland, a realm of rural beauty, unlimited blue skies and a mountainous silence. The album may not be revolutionary (this rarely happens nowadays), but unlike most of this type music lately, it's not just trippy pads and clicks void of human emotion, quite the contrary, emotional intensity is what made it stand out for me and pushed me to write about it. Which also makes it a bit pointless to dig into production technicalities, it's all on point, but it's not about that. So just dive into it!
As of now, you can stream/download excerpts from the album on the Arrhes Soundcloud and Bandcamp, while on Youtube you can find "Au Revoir Twillingate", exclusive upload for The Pimp Cup. Starting Friday, May 24th, the album is available from most quality streaming and download platforms. But wait! If you're a member of Synkretic Network, the social network for artists, musicians and fans, you can freely download “Couleur Primaire", together with an archive of over 50+ more hand-picked quality tracks contributed by various artists and labels. We're delighted with this gift and we're thanking Arrhes for the good vibes and generosity!
