Faecal cortisol metabolites were found to be unreliable indicators of stress and welfare in rehabilitating harbour and grey seal pups, likely due to individual variation and pre-rescue stress. Behavioural observations, particularly related to feeding methods and water access, provided more accurate welfare assessments. Early water access and environmental enrichment are recommended to support natural behaviours and improve rehabilitation outcomes.
