"Written for the early electronic instrument, the Ondes Martenot (above), Olivier Messiaen's "Oraison" is a beautifully mellow and plaintive piece of music. The Ondes Martenot is a close relation of the theremin, and like the theremin was frequently used (and abused) on sci-fi film and tv soundtracks throughout the 40's, 50's and 60's, but also gained a foothold in many "serious" orchestras. I first heard "Oraison" on the box set "Ohm;The Early Gurus of Electronic Music", as recorded by Ensemble d'Ondes de Montreal."

Dick Hyman's The Moog And Me from The Electric Eclectics of Dick Hyman. Beck sampled the intro for his single Sissyneck.

While I still don't love the spoken intros before each song, the music itself is revelatory. It has that other-worldly feel that sacred music should have. After all, if God is not of this world, then the music used to praise him should be the same. Amazing stuff, and highly recommended!
