“It's funny, when you look at someone through rose-colored glasses, all the red flags just look like flags”
We don’t speak anymore, and at one point
were not allowed to, my silence stretching like a braid
from my mouth to yours.
I was a promise and you were the thing that broke it,
a blood chorus filled only with screams.
I leapt so far into love
that I fell out of it.
The irony of stars
is that their deaths are more beautiful than their lives.
The same could be said of you and I.
Our dissolution was stunning
because it saved me from you.
In college, a poetry professor praised the windpipe
for both sustaining breath
and crushing it.
Praise the windpipe that turned me from you,
praise the throat that sang
after you closed it.
“Not all toxic people are cruel and uncaring. Some of them love us dearly. Many of them have good intentions. Most are simply toxic to our being simply because their needs and way of existing force us to compromise ourselves and our happiness. They aren’t inherently bad people, but they aren’t the right people for us.”
— Daniell Koepke
“The number of hours we have together is actually not so large. Please linger near the door uncomfortably instead of just leaving. Please forget your scarf in my life and come back later for it.”
— Mikko Harvey, from “For M,” Foundry (no. 9, September 2018)

“I’m restless and harsh and hopeless. Though I have love inside myself. It’s just that I don’t know how to use love. Sometimes it scratches like barbs.”
— Clarice Lispector, Agua Viva
I was never good at this body.
There was always something in me so anxious to crawl out.
