Undocumented immigrants is more accurate. 

And the fact that you fail to understand the power and importance of language sort of underscores the point here. This isn’t about “feefees”, ya dingleberry. It’s about how we as a society frame and conceptualize an entire class of people. 

A person, in themselves, can not be illegal. Illegal is not an identity. They may be people who are in the country illegally, but they, themselves, are not a crime. 

This whole notion of describing people as illegal began with the jewish people just before the holocaust. It is a way to dehumanize a class of people and justify violence against them in the name of the law. And it is a mistake we should be careful to not repeat. 

It is my hope that in the future, we have no undocumented immigrants in our country, because being an undocumented immigrant puts people at risk for exploitation. They are vulnerable and largely unprotected. I would rather our immigration policy be reasonable and manageable and effective so that immigrants to our country can all benefit from the protections and regulations we have in place for workers.
