I’ve definitely shed light on how nobody gives a fuck if you’ve been sexually assaulted when you’re not conventionally attractive or overweight because people think you should be grateful that anyone would want to touch you like that.

I know it’s been, like, two years, but I’m still mad and disappointed that Netflix’s Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency was cancelled

Someone out there on the internet found the original booklet that came with the original Nintendo system version of ‘Tetris’ and, hold on to your hats people, the blocks have names. THE BLOCKS HAVE NAMES!
“everyone’s been through trauma!” no, no they haven’t. hardship ≠ trauma.
trauma is described by the dsm as “outside the normal range of human experiences”
OUTSIDE. THE NORMAL RANGE. OF HUMAN EXPERIENCES
i understand what this post is trying to say but the conceptualization of trauma (and mental illness) as “outside the normal range of human experiences” should flag immediately to critical thinkers as problematic to say the least. who determines the normal range of human experiences, the dsm? the medical establishment? what have these institutions previously considered outside the normal human experience? homosexuality, hysteria, just for example.
what makes an experience within the normal range, if it happens to many people? what about rape? rape is, unfortunately, a part of the normal human experience. women are raped every day, in every society. is the trauma from rape then not considered trauma, because it’s within the range of normal human experience? and if rape is considered by the dsm an abnormal human experience, what does that tell us about their understanding of rape, of women, and of the world ?
we can apply this in so many ways. millions of black people living in america experience the daily trauma of living in constant fear, in stress, in economic insecurity. these effects have been measured psychologically and physically, many times over. is this trauma inside the normal human experience, because it happens to so many millions of people, and thus is not trauma at all?
as i said, i understand the point of this post, to reproach people who attempt to minimize real psychological damage as simply the trials and tribulations of regular life, but i encourage you to not push forth some establishment definition of trauma that requires it to be a special phenomenon in order for it to exist. we live in a world of patriarchy, white supremacy, capitalism, colonialism, imperialism, homophobia and transphobia. the reality is, trauma is a normal human experience in this world, and trying to define it otherwise can lead you to some pretty harmful conclusions, like, “living in a racist society doesn’t traumatize people of color because they’re used to it.” hopefully the ramifications of viewing some groups as capable of experiencing trauma and other groups as not is evident
So true
