Hi.

I’ve been away from Tumblr for a while. I miss y’all! 

It’s day like today I’m so thankful Tumblr exists. I had a hereditary cancer gene test done last month and I received the results today and it definitely wasn’t what I was expecting to hear...

My main concern was the BRCA gene. My grandmother passed away at a young age from breast cancer. I thought if I tested positive for anything it would have been BRCA1 or BRCA2.

Instead, I tested positive for BRIP1 and MUTYH. So what does that mean?  I have a clinically significant risk for ovarian cancer and colon cancer. I keep looking at the test results and it just feels like my head and spinning. I keep reading the words HIGH RISK: Ovarian over and over again. I was trying to process everything the doctor was telling me and the only thing I could hear is that I’ll have to have a hysterectomy at age 40 and the risk of my future child having cancer could be as high as 1 in 4 When considering the alternative, I’ll take the surgery any day but I’ve just felt a little overwhelmed at the news today. 

I already live with a chronic, autoimmune disease and it just feels a little like my body is determined to kill me, which makes me that much more thankful for science and technology, which can detect and treat such issues. I’m so thankful I have a doctor who took the time to thoroughly my family medical history and suggest this test, because I NEVER would have asked for this test because I didn’t think I was a candidate for it. Knowledge is power and I’m so thankful to have this knowledge. I’ve watched too many people I know and love suffer and it’d be a disgrace to their memories to not use this knowledge to take full control of my health and take as many preventive measures as possible.

carrie fisher isn’t just princess leia. carrie fisher isn’t just an actress we all admire from a famous series of movies made a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. carrie fisher isn’t just another name on the list of shitty things 2016 has done to people i admire.

carrie fisher is a woman who struggled with addiction and mental illness and never sugar coated it - she spoke honestly, openly, about every ugly truth, and made me so much less ashamed of the things i struggle with in my daily life.

carrie fisher is a woman who fought back against body shaming and misogyny, against agesim, who looked at critics and said “yes, i am a woman who has aged, and had children, and struggled with depression and addiction and my body has changed, so you can just shut the fuck up and deal with it”, and it was absolutely beautiful.

carrie fisher is a woman who was placed in the role of “princess” but didn’t conform to the typical hollywood idea of what a princess should be. she’s loud, brash, crass, and unapologetic for being so.

she’s an idol and an inspiration and she’s a woman who saved my life many times just by being who she was and never shying away from it or feeling the need to say sorry. carrie fisher is so much and more and i cannot begin to stomach the thought of 2016 taking her away from me, from her family, from the rest of the world and those of us who love her so dearly.

i love you, space momma. we all do. keep fighting the good fight.

Definitely thinking of wearing this outfit to Hollywood Studios (minus the blaster), but I’m kinda scared I’ll die of heat exhaustion in the Florida sun. BUT they are forecasting rain and I’d already be wearing rainboots.
